You have teachers constantly pushing you to do your best. There is no excuse for late homework or late assignments. Administrators will not take your if, ands, or buts. Sometimes you will have class in the basement then, the next period, gym on the 8th floor. The elevators will be packed, you will have to climb 9 flights of stairs. With the mind set of a high school student, you sometimes might feel unfairly retreated or wronged by deans or Brooklyn Tech staff. Trust me, as time goes on, you will realize, it's nothing personal. The school will seem like a human oven in the summer and winter. All of these elements may make you think that Brooklyn Tech isn't the school for you, or that you wouldn't want your child attending this institution. However, from the viewpoint of a Brooklyn Tech alumni, this school has sculpted me to the person I am today. You have educators who want to do more than make a semi decent salary. Teachers who want to help you succeed. I have gained more than just education within the sciences and engineering, I have gained pure knowledge. Knowledge that will carry with me where ever I go. Knowledge that is engraved in me, which makes me a better person, which gives me that advantage in the real world. As for the student body, it is an experience that you will never be able to encounter for the rest of your life. Attending Brooklyn Tech, you learn more about culture by your peers, than any course you can take in a higher education class. Not everyone who attends Brooklyn Tech has the same Ivy League ambition. You will meet some of the most brilliant pranksters, some of the most innovative individuals, and some of the most creative students. You will meet real people. You will find your own group of friends who will better define who you are as a person. I have met so many great and amazing people through my time at Brooklyn Tech. With that note, I have also met some who I would wish never to see again. There will always be something negative to say about any high school you attend. Your life is what you make it. The decisions you make will either make that path easier or harder. Brooklyn Tech is definitely one of those decisions in your life where you might think you've taken on a challenge that is more than you can chew. Trust me, this experience is worth it. I remember hearing the idiomatic phrase "cream of the crop" for the first time in my life, and it was used by then principal Madeline Brennan to describe the freshman class. Ms. Brennan was the longest serving principal in New York History, and rarely failed to mention she became principal before the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was completed. I don't remember seeing any of the usual social hierarchy tropes movies make you expect of middle school. Everyone existed in various shades of nerd. You had your band nerds (of which my trumpet playing self was a proud member), your drama nerds, and of course, your handball nerds. It was a good place to come of age, if such a place can exist. Last suggestion: When you do report card, please average it correctly. I had found that my real average for the report card is higher than the one that is written from the teachers. I am not mad, I want you guys to tell the truth. If you listen, then people will get happier and more excited by seeing this. For example, I got 85,85,85,90,96,97,98 on my report card. The regular average is 90.85714285714...and instead of that, they put 90.83. By .03 point is a little quite a difference. I would like you guys to follow my suggestion so you guys will make me happy. Overall, your child can learn really well at the school. They tend to perform above state level and…read morethe infrastructure is clean. However, the school only seems to care about academics and push the kids until they approach burn out at a very young age. The work is higher than their level and the work load is extensive so the kids become frustrated very early on. There is homework every day and even during holiday breaks. There's no room for the child to be a child (I.e play, make friends, interact, laugh, etc.). They are not allowed to talk or even laugh. Recess and lunch is crammed into one hour and even then they're not allowed to speak to each other because you have to keep your "volume at zero." There are no real extracurricular activities and everything is strict and rigid. Even when they make it seem like they're doing something fun, it's just more academic stuff. If you want your child to be enrolled in a mini bootcamp that performs well academically it's a good fit. Conversely, there's no room for social emotional learning. Many of the teachers also speak to the children anyhow and out of frustration because i believe they too are burnt out as evidenced by the low retention rate. There's literally 1-4 teachers there that actually speak to the kids kindly. You better be able to fall in line and perform well if you want to survive there. Parents feel disconnected from the school because of the lack of warmth but complaints just fall on deaf ears. Despite feeling frustrated, many of us just stay because we believe it's the better alternative to the public schools in the area. Wouldn't really recommend.

While I do not feel this is necessarily maliciously intended, the fact that the school treats its teachers as disposable (one classroom had 6 teachers cycle out over the year) and only sees students through the scores they get on their tests was greatly upsetting to me. When I interviewed for Ascend, I was upfront that I had not taught in a classroom. I asked to be an associate teacher working under another teacher and to have regular training. They agreed to this, but when the time came, I taught 6 classes with 25 - 30 five to seven year olds in each. I was in charge of teaching science, a subject I had never taught, and implementing a curriculum based on Ascends' expectations. Moreover, I was joining in January, replacing another teacher. The training was minimal and by the time I understood what I was supposed to be doing at Ascend, they were already reviewing who they wanted to return for next year. I was not surprised or exceptionally upset when they told me I was not being asked back, but the way they treated teachers far more skilled than I was, was incredibly disheartening. Overall, I am reviewing Ascend because their style of education isn't something most people would want. They advertise "joy" and "boundless choice" but they do not lead their school that way.

You've got to be kidding me!…read more The year after I graduated, Sheepshead Bay High School was voted as the 6th most dangerous public school in all of New York City! The average daily occupancy for this school is approximately 2,800 to 3,000. This is assuming that no one skips on classes (which is highly unlikely). In the original planning of the school, the occupancy was meant for approximately 1,000. This is a classic case of maximizing absolutely surplus value (socialist term) amongst inner city schools. Here are my thoughts on my 4 year tenure at this education facility... Teachers: The faculty is highly trained and dedicated in educating and motivating the student consensus. Amongst the various subjects studied throughout Sheepshead (ie: European History, English, Law, Math, etc...), each of the teachers were stringent in the teaching of their subjects. I will take this moment to thank my former teachers, Mr. Trant, Mrs. Newman, Ms. Johnson, Ms. Kovat, Dr. Starr, Ms. Mathews, and many others that instilled in me the desire and importance of achievement in the classroom which ultimately translated to achievement in life. It is a rare breed to find teachers that will go above and beyond the call of their duties to educate and help their students understand the elements that make them successful. For this, the teachers of Sheepshead Bay High School are not to be taken lightly, but rather, Thanked for their courage and dedication. Students: The demographic of the student consensus is greatly diversified, thus representing the population that resides amongst the Sheepshead Bay community. Most students that attend Sheepshead are there not by choice, but rather by zoning mandates. The average tenure of a graduating student at Sheepshead is approximately 4.5 to 5 years. Facility: There's no denying that Sheepshead Bay High School is an extremely old facility. Although some renovations have occurred in such classrooms as the Mock Trail Court Room and Computer Labs, the general education classrooms still lack the updating that's long overdue. With increasing temperature indexes during the summer, air conditioning devices need to be installed in every class room. Environment: During my senior year, fights occurred on average of 5 times a school week. The fights are generally caused by deficiently performing students in a means of either gaining "respect" or attention. The students who are there to educate and better themselves generally avoid conflict situations. Overall the main deterrence in Sheepshead Bay High School's ability to ascend to the upper echelon of high schools in New York City is the inability of the student body to accept that humility, understanding, motivation, dedication, and goals are the five essential elements required to succeed. Until the student consensus has a drastic change in mentality from that of oppression to opportunity, the rigorous negative publicity of this education facility will continue. Despite the exceptional performance of the faculty in attempting to help students achieve, it is ultimate the student that needs to accept and be willing to succeed.
