When my wife and I found ourselves looking for a quick dinner on early on in the week when fewer restos are open, we made our way over to Maple Cedar. Having come from Ottawa, which in addition to being the national capital of the country is also the shawarma capital, it was a bit weird how few shawarma places there are in the area. The menu leans in a mostly traditional Middle Eastern direction, although they do have pizza, donairs and garlic fingers too. We went with the shawarma ($15) and falafel platters ($15) for dine-in. It was nice to see a flow of customers, despite it being a Tuesday, and our food was in front of us in good time. My shawarma platter had thick pieces of chicken on top of a bed of savoury rice. I would have liked to see a mix of white and dark meat and some crispy bits, but it still had a nice, rich flavour and was moist and tender. Of note, the garlic sauce had more of a aioli-like texture than toum normally does. It tasted fine, but this would anger Lebanese friends of mine. The falafel platter had a generous serving of eight of the crispy chickpea fritters. The platter's composition made it a sort of build-your-own wrap, with sides of tomato, shredded romaine, pickled turnip and tahini with pita. We found the tahini a bit bland, but the falafel were spot on and not at all greasy. A container of baklava ($10) that we took home was flaky, savoury and sweet, and had the most noticeable flavour of orange/rose water I've ever had in baklava. On a return visit, I went for something quick and easy to-go, the large shawarma wrap ($11). After a short wait after a few others, I had my shawarma and classily ate in my car. It had a lovely and crisp exterior from the griddle/sandwich press, plus more traditional ingredients than most shawarma places - chicken, toum, pickled turnips and the clincher - fries. No salad in these bad boys! If they had a better toum, it would be a front runner for the best shawarma wrap that I've had in the province. Maple Cedar may have a broad menu to appeal to a smaller customer base that's less familiar with Middle Eastern food than big markets, but they're still doing right by their culinary origins.

It made for such a relaxing lunch. Our server Emily was incredibly kind, attentive, and offered some great recommendations, which we really appreciated. We ordered the full size Summer Salad, one Blackened Fish Taco, the 2-piece Fish & Chips, and the Lobster Roll with the garlic parmesan fry upgrade. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned. The Summer Salad was light and refreshing, the fish was perfectly cooked, and the Lobster Roll was another great one to add to our Nova Scotia lobster roll tour. The garlic Parmesan fries were definitely worth the upgrade. Between the friendly service, beautiful waterfront setting, and delicious food, Nook and Cranny was a wonderful lunch stop. If you're passing through Pictou, I'd definitely recommend checking it out!

Since burgeoning central/northern Nova Scotia food and drink empire Nook and Cranny opened their…read morethird branch in Pictou last spring, I'd had drinks and snacks on their patio, but never had a proper meal inside until recently. It was quiet on a Monday evening, and being Pictou County, we were lucky they were open at all. The space is quite open, with thick wooden beams stealing the show, while grey laminate flooring is an almost jarring contrast of modern, lowest price tag renos against the sturdy old bones. We were promptly looked after by the friendly staff, and while I was tempted by some of the monthly specials, I stayed onside with their regular menu, to get a feel for how their regular items. The menu rides a fine line - it's not too small (there's several each of apps, soups/salads, sandwiches and mains) but not so big that it's overwhelming or you're thinking that everything is just coming out of a Sysco freezer bag. While pub standards like burgers, fish and chips and a club sandwich all appear, some effort definitely went into the menu's creation. You're not going to see jackfruit tacos, brisket grilled cheese and mushroom "bruschetta" everywhere! I went for a more standard item, the Mushroom Jack burger, on my aforementioned mission to gauge their kitchen, while my wife opted for the Cranberry Coconut Chicken. With the Monday crowd (or lack thereof), our food was soon before us, and none too soon, given our appetites! My Mushroom Jack burger was quite well executed - honestly, it was much better than I expected it would be. What can I say, a string of mediocre-at-best pubs in Pictou County over the years have left me jaded! The patty was thick (8oz) but not overcooked, or too densely pressed. The mushrooms had an herby hit that paired well with the savoury truffle aioli, and spinach brought some vegetal vibrance. The Monterey Jack cheese lent its salty goodness, while the toasted bun held up well against its messy contents. Across the table, my wife's Cranberry Coconut Chicken was an impressive-looking plate. The dish is gluten-free, which means that the Chex (yes, the cereal) coating on the chicken is gluten-free. Go Chex? Life-long learning, people! Stuffed with herbs and goat cheese, it was definitely more flavourful than your run-of-the-mill chicken breast. A rice pilaf and roasted veg rounded out the dish, while a thin cranberry and citrus sauce brought sweet and tangy notes for contrast, although by the last few bites were swimming in it. On a return visit on a more lively Friday night, it looked like the menu had gotten a refresh, with a whole new slate of tempting items. I stuck to a traditional East Coast offering though - the fish cakes. I checked to make sure they were made in-house (they are), as although I have a perverse love of the High Liner, from-frozen, 99% potato, "fish" cakes, that's not what I want at a restaurant. The fish cakes came on a hefty portion of maple baked beans. No skimpy 2oz cup of beans here! I'm no baked bean connoisseur, and if I were I would deserve to be mocked relentlessly, but these had a good balance of sweet and savoury, and were nicely cooked - they weren't dry and grainy, nor cooked to mush. As for the fish cakes themselves, the respectably-sized cakes had a wonderfully crisp breading, which housed a plesant mix of fish and potato, with discernable shreds of haddock. The flavour profile had a noticeable fish flavour (unlike our friend High Liner's) without being *fishy*. The side of house-made green tomato chow provided a lightly tart and sweet foil for the savoury elements of the dish, with a chunky consistency that puts the store-bought chows that are mainly sugar and vinegar to shame. With food that follows through on the menu's promise of better-than-average pub grub, I can see why The Nook and Cranny is spreading across my neck of the woods, and I look forward to return visits on their patio on warmer days PS. Extra points for maintaining great social media communications and an up-to-date website, which most small town restaurants are decidedly *not* good at.

It's not easy being a pizza place in Pictou County, and all the more so when the granddaddy of the…read morecounty's famous style of pizza is a literal stone's throw away. At first glance, Andre's dine-in menu is broader than that of your standard takeout joint, with over a dozen pasta options and several different wraps and salads, on top of the usual assortment of burgers, fryer fare and of course, pizza, that you'd expect. My wife and I first came by for an easy mid-week lunch while in the midst of labourious home renos. We didn't want to cook and needed out of the house. Knowing that I'd save the pizza experience for another time, I went for the donair sub. It had a decent amount of meat, although I couldn't get a read on the exact flavour of it, due to a hefty slathering of donair sauce. That said, Andre's deserves a tip of the cap for making both meat and sauce in-house, as opposed to much of their competition in the area which is often mediocre Bonte/Mr. Donair product. There was lots of melty mozza, and the bun was crisp from its time in the oven, so overall it was a very good iteration of this hot mess of a sandwich! My wife snagged an Andre's Salad, which comes with romaine, red onion, red peppers, zucchini, sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms, feta and parm. It's a subtle upgrade from your run-of-the mill garden salad with a better variety of flavours, and I eagerly partook to balance out the less healthy ingredients of my sub. Our return visit saw us getting takeout, and this time it had to be pizza! We took a pass on their respectable Friday night deal of two large pizzas for ~$36 due to an already full fridge and that being a lot of pizza for two people, and went with a single XL combination, plus the good ol' Andre's Salad for more significant veg content. The wait was quite good for a Friday night at around 25 minutes, although I was only placing the order at 7pm, so a little past dinner time for many families. Upon opening the pizza box, it was noticeably different, as although Pictou County-style pizza is known for having some browning of the cheese that covers all the toppings, Andre's was completely browned. There was even some crisp bits of cheese that had shattered a bit! While daintier taste buds may not be a fan, I'm all for this additional flavour and texture! Another distinguishing feature of Andre's pie is the crust - it's much thinner than that of other Pictou County-style places. That's not to say it's a thin crust, it just isn't a half-inch of dense dough. I assume most places do that to support the generous amount of toppings and cheese that are one of the defining features of the area's pizza, but Andre's thinner crust works just as well. Don't get me wrong, it's not a demonstrably great crust - the crust is dense and bready, with no airiness, and little-to-no leopard-spotting on the bottom crust and cornicione. Unfortunately, like all other Pictou County pizza places, they've got the toppings and sauce down pat, but these are not well-crafted crusts, just sauce and cheese delivery vessels. Speaking of the sauce, being a Pictou County-style place, the brown sauce was bold and peppery with a slightly stronger flavour than others I've had here. Crust criticisms aside, I'm a definite Andre's pizza fan! Being in the pizza game in Pictou County may not be easy, but there's a reason why Andre's Pizza has been at it for decades.

What you will be looking at is all kinds of ticket stubs for concerts from a who's who of rock bands and artists of the 60s through today. Think Black Sabbath, David Bowie, U2, etc. Then, on the walls, a myriad of signed albums, from the same type of bands. Clearly, the owner of this place is a rock fan, and also spent a pile of money on this memorabilia! All this stuff gives this place a really cool vibe. The food is elevated pub-type fare. My colleague's club sandwich was on a kaiser type roll and looked excellent. My beef dip sandwich had a very flavourful au jus accompanying it and the side caesar salad was excellent. My only complaint is that it does take a bit of time to get your food here, which happened both times I had lunch. Nevertheless, the food is good, the vibe is cool, so I'd happily return.
