Never had a bad experience. They have a 48 hour policy on fish if they die, they aren't like your big chains like petsmart that have 2 weeks. But all of mine have lasted longer than that regardless. Anytime I buy more fish I bring in a sample of water, they test for free. I had an algae bloom and they helped my through that. Super knowledgeable on what fish go in your tank, in fact, they always remember me and what fish I have so they help make sure I don't get anything that will destroy my mini ecosystem! They are moving to a new location, as soon as they open up I plan on buying some more fish! Won't buy fish anywhere else in the Des Moines area! read more

Amazing selection of both saltwater and freshwater fish. Their tanks are not overly crowded and well maintained with healthy happy fish. The decorations in the tank also are specific to each species like the cichlids with drift wood. Staff is super knowledgeable and friendly. Helping you to pick out fish that will get along together. And also there are helpful tips on labels above the tanks. They also carry a selection of dog and cat supplies. They are a little more expensive but they gave high quality items. read more

Small locally owned business. New owner but Judy and the crew are still there. Judy is very helpful and has practical advice. Nice selection of healthy fish, they have things you won't find at Petco. You may have a slightly higher price but you get expert advice, and they help you manage your hobby. read more

First time I've stopped in here since the move to Douglas. The shop is well organized and clean compared to others in the metro. Nice freshwater, saltwater, and live plant displays. Prices seem a little high, but they are a locally owned shop and I'm sure they don't get some of the price breaks other big box stores get who can buy in large quantities. The staff is knowledgeable, doesn't hover, but always make themselves available for questions. read more

I was recommended here from a friend and upon entering I was greeted politely and felt excited about buying some new fish. The owner was very knowledgeable and helpful when it came time to pick out the fish I wanted for my new aquarium. That's where the good times stopped. I purchased several fish for a total of about 90 dollars. Brought them home did the necessary quarantine from my other fish and then I introduced them into our tank. Everyone was getting along and our tank was thriving. I had fish from before including my beautiful Angel fish. About a week and a half later my Angel started acting funny, jumping around swimming erratically just acting funny. Then I started to notice a white film all over her body, before I could do anything about it she was gone along with 3 of the fish I purchased from Adams. I learned that she got Ich a very common ailment in fish. When I called to talk to owner he was concerned but took no blame in why she died. Now I never had any issues with my tank or fish before I went and purchased new ones from Adams. I am more then dissatisfied that not only did he dismiss his involvement but that he didn't off a refund for the 3 that I purchased from him that died including a 30 dollar fish. I stress that I never had any issues until I came here and bought fish. You don't dismiss a customer like that. Then while I was there he took a phone call and the same problem I was having this customer was having. I hate to do this but due to no refund and the fact that he tried to act like it was my fault I have to give him one star and will never purchase fish from here again. read more

Got some fish at petsmart. All died in 24 hours. Got new fish at Adam's Aquatic Very clean fish and tanks with beautiful fish Staff is very Friendly and they know their stuff. Definitely will be going back.(Rick Hawxby) read more

Given the limited number of pet stores in Des Moines area carrying saltwater fish and corals, I decided to stop by this place and check it out! Unfortunately I would not recommend this place for anyone starting with saltwater. Their prices are just way too high and not appropriate for what they are selling. For example, the store was selling a piece of rock with some gsp on it for 80 dollars?! Thats crazy, given that most people will give gsp away for free since it grows so fast and tends to take over the fishtank. It feels like thia store is trying to take advantage of it's uneducated customers. read more
