Al's Diner - Loving the retro interior

Now, I was meeting Ben for lunch at Veg Out (see http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/veg-out-cafe-birmingham?hrid=GgI2cmA6RaEsO8pLKdk1Aw), I didn't actually eat here - I just grabbed a coffee to visit and soak up the ambiance (being your intrepid Yelp Community Manager). Al's Diner is just off the main stretch of Kings Heath and opposite York Road. It's easy to spot, with it's American vibe and bright red exterior. As you might guess from the name, it's got a bit of a "happy days" vibe to it. From the red and white patterned work surfaces to old school Americana prints and design touches, it's all very sweet. As I say, I just popped in for a hot drink - but I will definitely pop back in for a burger at some point! The burgers looked huge and were priced around £2.50 (without fries) making it a bargain! They also had a great selection of sweet treats on the menu at similarly reasonable prices. My coffee wasn't the best (it was served with UHT milk), but that's not why you would visit normally. I grabbed a coffee and a can of cola and I believe it came to around £2.20 - which is a bit of a steal really. I was served with a smile and felt welcome throughout my whole visit (despite taking up a whole booth just to drink my coffee and do some work). I probably wouldn't travel all the way to Kings Heath to visit, but I urge you to pop in if you are based around here. If I was down here for the day, I would 100% make a date with one of their calorific treats for lunch or dinner.

It doesn't take much imagination to offer something original in the ways of fast food. Al's Diner have spotted a niche in the market and jumped right in. They serve burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes and deserts in such authentic US surroundings, (NYC print wall paper, state-side memorabilia authentic shake-bar stools) that you half expect Arthur Fonzarelli to enter stage right with a 'Hey!' and start asking 'bout Richey. This place is very popular with tweens, who have claimed it as their own space to meet, hang out and gaze out of the window while supping a shake. Others like to drop in for a pre-pub snack before hitting the High Street. Families are catered for too, and on a Friday evening they take time out from busy schedules for some quality informal dining time together. Those who believe that 'It's Dork To Eat Pork' can join in as the hot-dogs here are made with beef. In fact, the whole menu is Halal. Service with a smile comes as standard, and they'll tweak meals to suit you. There's a level of community and philanthropy going on here which is hard to beat. If you haven't got an Uncle Sam then you can find a surrogate family member in Al.

It was fairly quiet with a few booths and tables occupied - I guess not everyone knows about this place yet. The decor of this place is awesome - think retro and American diner rolled into one. You can either prop yourself by the bar or grab a booth or table to dine. There is also a separate bar area that has yellow retro leather seats. I love the lighting in here and there is graffiti style art on the bathroom walls and avant-garde graffiti in the beer garden / smoking area outside the back. Before coming here I had already looked at the menu knowing that I wanted a dirty burger! So that's exactly what I had - pulled pork burger with chipotle jam and fries. The burger was pretty delish and for a starter we decided to have 4 chicken wings with BBQ sauce - this were a bit disappointing if I'm honest. In short I would rate the following elements of my experience as follows: Service - 6/10 Food - 7/10 Atmosphere - 6/10 Toilet cleanliness - 8/10 It would be interesting to visit this place in the evening for drinks, to check out the vibe. They have a quiz here every Wednesday at 8pm and bands quite often play here.

The fact it was so quiet made me think twice about ordering food for myself and my two grown-up sons. We decided to take the plunge, we often eat in Moseley Village but haven't tried this establishment before. The menu is designed in a quite attractive way and there is a good choice of the usual Pub fayre focusing on burgers. We chose our burger, ordered at the bar and the food was served reasonably fast. The portions are not overwhelming, and the prices are not overwhelming either. The burgers were cooked to perfection in a brioche bun and with delicious crispy bacon. The one I chose had one of those delicious flat mushrooms which complemented the burger perfectly. My lads had been eyeing up the desserts even before the main course came, after all they are growing boys! But even they were defeated after the excellent food. We all shambled home replete and happy. I strongly recommend, and my lads are already talking of going back when they return from University.

The waiter handed us sticky food stained menus and advised us too order at the bar, and left leaving the table with dirty plates and glasses. I made a selection and went up to the bar too order, I waited 10 minutes for a barman to take my order as there was nobody behind the bar. I placed my order and asked for my table to be cleared, and was told to speak with a waiter. After finally clearing the table myself I received my order which was incorrect. It was at this point I advised that I wanted to complain and was told to contact customer services and I decided to leave the restaurant. I will not be going again.

It's not particularly child orientated and they seemed to view the kids as an inconvenience. However, we went for pre-cinema cocktails (without kids, of course) and the service was much better at the bar! The barmaid advised me on the cocktails and prevented a possible disappointment, which I was grateful for! I ended up with a gorgeous cocktail called a Strawberry Shortcake, with strawberries, Amaretto (my all time favourite!) and lots of lovely vanilla ice cream. Lovely! So all in all, I probably wouldn't eat here again but for a special cocktail, it is just fine :)

Sadly it doesn't appear to get busy, which is a shame, as the food is good and the service is also of the same calibre. The process is similar to a Subway, except you order at the till and they prep and cook it and bring it to your table. Service was fast and food was scorching hot. We had a falafel grilled flatbread (a little dry, but still hot and good), a Philly Steak (with cheese) -- tasty but drowning in sauce -- and a Kati roll (like a hand-held burrito), with a Mediterranean salad on the side. Everything came out nice and quickly but, in my humble opinion, the products get their flavour from sauce applied during or after cooking rather than from herbs or spices or marinade. We only sampled three hot products so it isn't a great sample, admittedly, but everything that had sauce on it was drowning in it. Dishes are around £4 to £6 each, and each dish is large enough to be a meal on its own. Don't be tempted to order more than a main and a side unless you're absolutely starving! We liked the ability to have food from everywhere in the world (think of this place as a small portable version of Jimmy Spice's) and as this place is on our doorstep we'll be checking back there very soon (and taking advantage of the 20% off check-in offer!).
