But be prepared to carry your bags up a couple of flights of stairs. There might be an elevator somewhere but I did not look that closely.

CTA has a station at 47th Street and it's not bad. It actually is pretty nice and clean. With the…read moreoutdoor platform there's very few bad smells. Even though the area isn't great it's not all bad or anything. The trains get here every few minutes. It seems to be one of the better stations in the area. It serves the Red Line. This also has great access to busses as many come to the bus stops just outside the entrance of this elevated station. It's also clean. There's not that bad smell like at underground stations. Also this above ground station gives you a good view of the surrounding area. This happens to be in the middle of the Dan Ryan Expressway so you can see cars whizz by and maybe see crashes or something else interesting. Good as far as transit stations go. It's cleaner than most others around here. This is mostly quiet except for the traffic and it's for the most part safe.

For the purposes of this review, we are going to concentrate on #1 and 2. Though eating the #3 sandwich while riding the Red line somewhere interesting would be great too. I don't usually use the 47th street station, riding to Garfield instead on my weekly trek down to the U of C campus. Today, flush with the pheromones of change, I took a different bus route home that took me to the 47th street station. This station was clean, neat and extremely well lit. In front, near the bus waiting area, was a giant flat screen showing the CTA bus tracker arrival schedule for the routes that serve this station - CTA Buses #15, #24, #47, #51. Beautiful! Walking inside the station, was another flat screen TV showing Red line northbound and southbound arrivals. Mon dieu! This is a beautiful thing for People Like Me that have not scurried down the iPhone rabbit hole just yet. Both of these TVs worked, and were *not* splattered with effluvial swill!! In my happiness at seeing this efficiency, I dared to dream that all Red line stations would be quickly outfitted with these features - yet wistfully wondered how long it would be before the screens got broken and/or stolen. But at any rate . . . this station is a score for the CTA.

This morning however I took it to catch my flight to Midway. Why was I impressed? The train was clean (relatively speaking), b.o. free, and it didn't hit any notable slow zones. It was fairly empty when I rode it, but I think that's because all sensible people were in bed getting some shut eye. I reserve the right to change my opinion in the future, I mean it is the CTA and all. This ride could've been an anomaly. We'll see how I feel on my return ride home.

Been riding the blue lines for decades since Jefferson Park was the end of the line before they…read moreextended it out to O'Hare Airport. 1) Use to drive from Mr Prospect to Golf Mill pick up the 270 bus & take it to Jefferson Park & take it downtown. 2). Years later I lived in Oak Park by Harrison & Lyman & took the Blue Line from Austin Ave to downtown 3). Next I lived in Old Irving & picked up the Blue line from Irving Park to downtown 4). Finally I moved to Forest Glen where I have been for over 20 years. When I go downtown I drive to either the Old Irving or Montrose stop & take it downtown. Old Blue has served me for longer than I care to admit. It's fairly reliable of course it doesn't compare the transit systems in New York, Paris or Tokyo but it gets you from point A & somewhere in proximity to point B. I have relied on Old Blue for many years & has been there for me most of the time.

So the smell of cleaner was a pleasant/unpleasant change from the usual stink. Jarvis is one of the lesser stations; what do you expect? You show up, pay through the turnstile, wait for the train, and board when it arrives. Not much else to it. Howard station is so close that you can see when your train is departing. However, bonus points for the Onion paperbox outside, and the Chase ATM inside. Slight detraction for the ATM working only 60% of the time. Charmers Cafe across the street for your caffeinated beverage of choice in the morning; Poitin Stil next to it for your final drink of a boozy night out. And wherever you're going after leaving the station, it's a much nicer walk from Jarvis than from Howard.

I only recommend this stop if you're getting here NOT by car. I found parking around this area to be an absolute nightmare because most of the side streets are permit, and street cleaning was happening. There's no chairs around. The station was empty when I went, except for a lone attendant in the booth. She helped us out of the exit door when we showed up. The station looks old, needs a fresh coat of paint and maybe some public art, and some better lighting. It was not a good experience. Total mistake coming to this station. Even getting out the door was difficult, and there's no ramps leading up to this station. What a pain in the leg.

What brought me to CTA - Main was that its location sat the closest to my job, so it ended up…read morebecoming an option for depart and aboard as my vehicle underwent maintenance. In the past I have driven passed this stop, but never utilized it until this moment. Viewing the station from Chicago Ave, you would think that it was classy considering the buildings exterior and surrounding area that actually appears safe, however, things appear differently once you enter the station itself from Chicago Ave or exit it from the 'L' train, and walk the stairwell. Don't get me wrong, considering that the station has been around since 1908, it is maintained as far as being cleaned and trash taken out, but its interior consists of chipped paint, rust and ever growing plants. It is also one of those stops with a wooden platform. I do imagine that this stop will be renovated in the future. If so, the nearest alternative stops are Dempster and South Blvd. Being that I could possibly visit this stop again, I bookmarked a few businesses within the sector that caught my eye. Some of those businesses are Sher Main Grill, Firehouse Grill, The Lucky Platter, The Brothers K Coffeehouse, and Dollop Coffee & Hoosier Mama Pie Company which most except for Firehouse Grill are 4-star rated. And lastly, other than what I have mentioned, my commute to-and-from this train stop was very pleasant and it appears easily accessible to buses, taxi cabs, uber, lyft and Main Metra Rail Station which actually sits next door.
