Why 5 stars? Because we got exactly what we needed…read more --- --- --- We landed in Calgary with a plan to hop in the rental car and head straight to Banff. But our hunger got the best of us, so we ended up stopping in town for lunch across the street from Element Cafe. Our next mission was to get caffeine and a little something sweet to finish off lunch. Element Cafe achieved both of these goals. I ordered an Americano and it did the trick. But I really enjoyed the Birthday Cake cookie. The cookies caught my eye because they looked a lot like the mountains we were about to see in Banff: they had many ridges and depth to them. The guy working in here even offered to heat them up for us before I could ask, so he really understood the keys to our heart. My only piece of feedback would be: when you heat the cookies up, don't be shy! Push that dough to the limit and let your cookies be enjoyed the way God intended: like they just came out of the oven. With that being said, the guy was the picture of a nice Canadian. Don't let his slightly under heating on this day shape how you view him as a fellow human. He was great, as were his cookies and his coffees.

Although the café itself had a cozy ambience, I would say that my order was rather lackluster. The matcha latte was really milky, and the matcha itself tasted watered down. And the grilled chicken flatbread tasted decent, but it was super crumbly and messy to eat, making it almost feel like a choking hazard with some bites. I would like to go back to try a different flavor of drink since the ambience was nice. But based on my first experience, it wasn't the greatest café Calgary had to offer.

The afternoon tea deal also came with a snack tower, the bottom consisting of savory sandwich bites, and the top two levels with pastries and sweets. The things that stood out to me were the lemon meringue, fruit tart, and the carrot cake (the cream cheese frosting was really tasty). Overall, this was a super cute and fun thing to try. I'd definitely recommend it if you want to try little bites of various things they carry.

The raspberry filled coconut cookie was chewy and light. The breakfast with sausage eggs and potatoes and toast was enough for two. We couldn't begin to eat it all and took some away for later. Love this place. Wish we had one. We received multiple recommendations to try this from locals as well. Lots of seating. Craft coffees. Bakery and savory and food for all hours. To make matters worse, we were rushed to order and pay the bill. After that couple left, another pair were seated at our six-person table without any explanation. Our dishes arrived in two separate waves with a 10-minute gap. They also automatically added an 18% tip for parties of more than five people, which I expect at least we should have a private table. When I expressed my dissatisfaction to the server, the owner came out and became confrontational and aggressive. He raised his voice, saying I could "tell him what I am not satisfied with." Then he offered a refund, which I immediately declined, and afterward snatched a package of coffee from the counter and offered it as compensation. I refused again--it felt more like an insult than a genuine apology. After we posted our reviews, the owner privately messaged my friend, asking us to remove them and citing the "small Chinese community" as a reason we should support each other. That's incredibly manipulative. Using community guilt to pressure customers into deleting honest feedback is inappropriate and only reinforces our negative experience. I will not be returning.

When our meal arrived, she treated us to a surprise side that Saltlik is known for. She continued to check in on us throughout our meal. Chantel was the epitome of excellence in service. Our meal was wonderful, even exceeding the high expectations we had set. The manager, Dillon, also checked in on us and spent time with us to learn about our experience. This was a fantastic dinner, made even better by the service we received from Chantel and the personalized attention by Dillon. Highly recommended.

I'm sad to say that Cucina, once one of our favorite spots, has gone significantly downhill. Our recent experience was very disappointing. We had a reservation for 9 people during lunch, made well in advance. We arrived at 11:40 AM, but our food didn't come out until 1:20 PM. Watching other tables, including those who arrived long after us, receive and finish their meals while we were still waiting was frustrating and awkward. By the time our food arrived, lunch service was practically over, and the delay had us all concerned about being late for our afternoon commitments. When we politely asked about our food, the manager's dismissive and rude response--that our group was large--felt like they were blaming us rather than taking responsibility. If they can't handle large groups, they really shouldn't accept such reservations. The most baffling part was the treatment of one of our orders--a salad. It was made right away and left sitting on the counter, visible from our table, for about an hour until the rest of the meals were ready. Yes, an entire hour! When our dishes finally arrived, they still served this sad, stale salad. Of course, we had it sent back and asked for it to be redone. As for the food itself, it was a mixed bag, but mostly disappointing. While the dishes were served hot and the chicken was well-prepared, everything else fell flat. The salmon was fresh, but the accompanying sauce, mashed potatoes, and green beans were bland and lacked seasoning. On the flip side, the pasta dishes were overly salty. The conchiglie with braised beef and pancetta had poorly balanced flavors, while the bucatini with sausage was nearly inedible due to excessive salt, overpowering the delicate prawns in the dish. The manager eventually applied a 10% discount for the delays, but it felt like too little, too late. Worse, the lack of an apology or any genuine acknowledgment of the inconvenience left a bitter taste. Sadly, this experience has convinced us not to return. Cucina is simply not what it used to be, and that's a real shame. read more

The eggplant was a lil undercooked... very cold and harder on the bite.. shouldn't be this hard to eat an eggplant lol Overall, the service could be better, the food was ok could be way better .. however steak was absolutely fantastic definitely the game changer.. maybe I'll be back again when it is less busy and that day was just a one off .. They were very friendly and accommodating. They made up for the lackluster food. Price is high, especially considering the (lack of) food quality. Drinks were fine. Not to the fault of our server, the bar was slow.

Hailley has the brightest, happiest personality, and took such good care of us beginning to end. Her recommendations of the Frangelico Chicken with side house penne, amazing Caesar salad, and the very best homemade tiramisu ever are worthy of beyond five stars. The teamwork evident on this busy night speaks to their excellent management and what a true Italian family restaurant should be. We all went for soft, and the cook's skill was evident. I can't recommend this delightful little restaurant highly enough. The food was superb, service was perfect, coffee was excellent, and the price was perfectly fine. Parking at 14th and 5th is what it is, but plenty of Calgary city parking (mobile pay only) available in the building. We all loved this place and will definitely be back.
