To give some context, I was able to enjoy a Flamenco performance in Madrid years ago, but wanted to see one with my family on our recent trip to Granada. We chose La Alborea and (PRO-TIP:) made a point to arrive early and wait outside so we could claim front row seats. The space is intimate, as mentioned before, and has several rows of seating (stadium, style, so you can see the performance from the back). Snag your seats and then head over to grab a sangria or beer for the show. The performance included two musicians (guitar and percussion) and two dancers. Every aspect of this performance was powerful. The quote on the front of the stage says it best: "Un extracto de fuego y de veneno, eso es el flamenco." - Antonio Gades (translation: An essence of fire and venom, that's what flamenco is). Both the female and male dancer commanded your attention with sensuality and force. Having seen Flamenco many times before, we were absolutely blown away by the performances at La Alborea! Overall, I would highly recommend booking a show at La Alborea. Several of us in the group left vowing to find Flamenco lessons when we got home!

I'd previously been to a flamenco show in Seville and did not enjoy it so much but this show was much more energetic and spirited with lots of fancy foot work and more inspiring music than the one I saw in Seville. We selected to include a glass of wine with our admission which was a nice touch. Seating is a bit crammed and very close together. The show was exactly an hour. My only complaint other than the tight seats was a rowdy group of Brits sitting behind us that kept talking during the performance, but I can't really downgrade the venue for their bad behavior. Although, maybe they could have asked them to be more polite and quiet. All in all, recommend for a short flamenco show experience in a convenient location.

I'm a flamenco dancer taking intensive courses at Escuela de Carmen de las Cuevas, and while here…read moreI've been touring as many of the local tablaos as I can, so here's how Tablao Flamenco Albayzin stacks up compared to others: Price is typical of tablaos (around 16-18 Euros) and includes a free drink (most people order sangria or tinto de verano - red wine with lemon soda). Show will be mostly flamenco, but as their website mentions, they will have one belly dance. This venue's decoration and this part of the performance are more Arabic-influenced than others - so if that interests you, this is a good show for you. The GOOD: -Though this theater feels large and holds 150 people, the audience is arranged on 3 sides of the elevated stage (front and 2 peripheries), and every row of audience seats is on risers, so you can easily see over the heads in front of you regardless of where you are seated. -Show is 1 hour and 15 minutes, which is a little longer than most. There was a singer, guitarist, and 3 female bailaoras (dancers) and 1 male bailaor. To me 1 of the bailaroas was pretty sloppy, 1 mostly did the belly dancing, and then the other was phenomenal - in terms of expression and precise technique. The male bailaor was also fantastic in these elements (the night I went). Every tablao venue seems to have their own structure of how they have the performers dance, in this one every dancer soloed for a long time - so if there's one you really don't like, you'll still get to see several others. The MEH: -Unfortunately the night I went it seemed to attract large tourist groups who are not self-aware; there was a large French group behind me who were talking SO loudly during a very quiet and beautiful solo dance that it even distracted the singer on stage as he glared at them (though they did not even notice this...). Not the venues fault, but I did notice the largeness of this theater seems to mean that they can, and therefore do, accommodate large tourist groups who may be loud. -Some of these large tourist groups may also, unfortunately, be in possession of selfie sticks and trying to take photos and use their giant iPads to record videos so that you are forced to have the view of the show on their device instead of just viewing the show...(Other venues like Casa del Arte prohibit videoing/photos until the very last dance of the performance). If you only get to go to one show in Granada, I wouldn't make it here, I'd go where you're guaranteed to see great dancers in a space that respects the art form: casa Del arte does this without fail.

Depending on which show and ticket option you select from, a paella dinner is offered, which I wish I had discovered sooner! Since the seating was more theater-style, my seats at Jardines de Zoraya were better. However, the performance itself wasn't as impressive as the other shows I saw during my trip. They leaned a bit too much into contemporary elements with their outfits, when in reality, most tourists are looking for the classic flamenco experience--polka dots, ruffled dresses, and all.

You sit very close together in a small cave and the dancers are inches away from you. I realize this is not just some romantic dance but a powerful way of communicating strong emotions. The dancers are incredibly talented, emotive, precise, energetic! They playfully interact with the audience, one of the performers taking the hat off my head and improvising a dance with it-- incredible! The level of physical skill required is breathtaking, like the fastest tap dancer you've ever seen you wonder how they can move their feet that fast. This was absolutely one of the highlights of my visit to Spain, and it could be for you, too.

Soon after we arrived and checked in with the host we were taken to our assigned seats. Our beverage order was then taken and the drinks were quickly brought out to us since they stated we needed to finish the drink before the show started. I must admit this was a bit rushed. The show lasted for ~1 hour and it was good. Those flamenco dancers are impressive, so much emotion in their faces, such intense and fast footwork, it's quite the endurance workout with each dance. There were three female and one male dancers. They each got their turn to do a dance a couple of times around. We were sitting very close to where the dancers were sitting and those lights directed at them were really hot! We were sweating, I can't even imagine how hot they must have felt. Yes, it may be a bit touristy as others mentioned, especially if you're visiting in high season, but who other than tourists would go to a flamenco show? If you're visiting Andalucía, where flamenco originated, I'd definitely recommend going to a flamenco show but especially if you're in Granada since being in a cave adds a bit more drama to the ambiance.

We had met dancer owner Enrique Carmona Cortes, aka El Canastero earlier in the day. We had a few friends in common, so he invited us to attend the evening show. The establishment is named after his mother Maria La Canastera, we had a great time meeting his family and enjoying the flamenco dancing. It is great that most of the caves have now installed wood floors for the dancers. Needed for the footwork and most important for the care of the dancer's body. We had a great time, and we have visited a few caves throughout the years and all of them have good flamenco shows. But the history the Zambra carries is special within the history of flamenco dance. The show is in cave, which adds more character to the presentation. The dancers seemed to be enjoying what they were doing and they were dancing like they were in front of a big or knowledgeable audience. I do not know much about this dance , but I found the show very entertaining and I could feel all the emotion from the dancing . All dancers were good but one of the female dancer was extraordinary. Just go to hear the music and see the dance. You don't want to be that clown clinking your silverware while a woman is pouring her heart out on stage. That will happen, especially among certain tourist groups from certain countries renowned for their discourtesy. (If you want to get a drink, they're not great here, but that's more acceptable. Just be respectful about when you set your glass back down.) El Templo del Flamenco is a *fantastic* music and dance experience. There's one male singer, one female, one guitarist, one guy who claps (and sometimes dances) and two women who clap, stomp and dance. The music is passionate. The performances are powerful. The venue (a hidden, whitewashed cave) is unique. You will have a great time, guaranteed. I was seriously wowed by the talent on display. As I mentioned, I was deeply annoyed that waiters would frequently have to service tables in the middle of performances. And I was annoyed that certain tourist groups from certain countries renowned for their discourtesy had no idea how to silence their cameras so they wouldn't chime every time they went to take a picture. And I was annoyed that certain-certains also had a way of clinking their silverware at the absolute worst musical moments. But if you can get past that, you will see amazing artists at the top of their game, giving you passion that could melt stone. I wrote them in advance to secure our place and they had one of their employees meet us (and others) at the Puerta de Elvira (an easy-to-find monument). From there, you ascend *several* winding staircases to get to the venue. It's not an easy climb unless your middle name is Stairmaster. If you miss the escort, it may be possible to find the venue with an offline map app, like "maps.me," although such offline maps tend to be woefully incomplete. You will be shocked at how hidden this place is. Warning #2: If you attend the later of the two performances, be sure to have eaten *before* the show. Granada tends to shut down earlier than other Spanish towns we visited, so we were literally racing from closed restaurant to closed restaurant, searching in vain for something open that late. Come with a full belly and you'll be happier. (If you attend the first performance of the night, most restaurants should be at your disposal for a post-show meal.)

The poem is about incest and rape, so not a very happy play. The performance is an interpretation of the poem with the use of music, song, and flamenco dance. There's not a lot of participants (two dancers and two musicians) and the venue seats about 20 people. The performers are very humble and true thespians, performing solely to entertain and enjoy their craft. Very talented performers so I would recommend this if you are in the mood for something a little bit different and unique.
