The service is always impeccable, the seats are comfortable and the food consistently delightful. The only bad thing is that I can never choose what on the menu I want to eat. It all looks just too delicious. Recommended dishes include the Sweet Chilli Chicken and the Chicken Sajahani (another way I rate Indian restaurants is by the quality of meat they use and Oh Calcutta always use tender pieces of white meat--never chewy or gristly). I got it one night when I was procrastinating study, and the delivery was extremely fast and the guy was very nice. I got the butter chicken and some naan bread. I'm not too sure what it even was about the food but it was one of best Indian I have had around Auckland! The ingredients just tasted very fresh and the sauce was so tasty. The beef in the Beef Saagwala was a bit on the dry side but the spinach sauce was rich and succulent, whilst that old standby Bombay Aloo was well above average. In addition, the rice was beautifully prepared and we also enjoyed a sweet but mildly spicy Peshawari Naan. We're long standing fans of the Jewel but had been of the opinion that its best days were behind it. However, it now seems to be under new management and the food is seriously good. And this was our second delicious recent meal from there, so we know it wasn't a freak result. The servings were very generous and we'd obviously over-ordered. Not a problem as we'll enjoy the leftovers tonight! And whilst I'm on the subject of Indian food, might I suggest that those Kiwis who still insist on hogging just one dish whilst their companions hog their own, learn the error of their ways. I find Victoria Park in itself to be bit lacklustre and in Ivillage the high ceilings and large dining don't do much to combat this.
