Nestled in the heart of Glendalough (County Wicklow), this four generation family-run farm has made a living from hill sheep farming on the beautiful rugged mountain sides that surround this ancient and historic valley. Theirs is story of hard work, resilience, and, above all, a deep love for the land - a way of life that is quickly disappearing. Making a little extra income from tourist visits such as ours is one way to keep things going.
This was the 2nd sheep dog demo that Gayle and I experienced during our recent trip to Ireland. the 1st was outside of Dingle, which is subject to another one of my reviews. Both were highly entertaining, a great learning opportunity, visually intriguing, and all led by a personable farmer/rancher who communicated their lifestyle well. Rex the dog was great and even in the rain.
After the demo, we were invited to hold a lamb, look at some of the sheep up close, and enjoy some historical pictures and implements. I had a fun aside with the farmer, stating that if you ran over a sheep in Iceland, you had to find the farmer and pay him for the loss. He responded that in Ireland, he'd probably have to pay for the car damage! read more
