I have been to social security office in Saco on a few…read more occasions over the years. I have never reviewed them before until now. On Monday we walked in to find a packed room full of people patiently waiting. The security officer James suggested we come back on Thursday typically a slow day. James happens to be the nicest person I have ever encountered. Not only is he nice but he offers to help everyone who walks in with a geniune smile & kind words. So we arrive back to SS on Thursday. There to greet us was James. As usual he's his same cordial self. Sure enough we had only a short wait. Our # 's were called & Nancy waited on us. There must be something in the drinking water that makes the employees extra pleasant. Kudos to the social security office in Saco Maine!!!

The St. Lawrence Arts center is "historic," which is the general term used for very old and grungy…read more While this could be a negative, the experience is saved by one phenomenal, rare feature: drinking is encouraged from your seat. But from the beginning...St. Lawrence was originally a church founded in 1897 on the site of a former ice rink, in the heart of Munjoy Hill. The Front Room is across the street for easy pre-show food/beverages. In 2001, the non profit group Friends of the St. Lawrence re-opened the property as a 110 seat theater. I attended the Nutcracker Burlesque. Mistakenly thinking I was going to a strip club, I downed two strong Manhattan's before. After entering, you immediately encounter the bar, with many affordable options for wine and beer. Unlike Merrill Auditorium or any local theater I've been to, you can bring the drinks to your seat. And I think literally everyone did. I haven't seen such a tipsy, hooting and hollering crowd since Rock of Ages on Broadway. It's a smaller theater and not exceptionally nice, but the lights and sound were great, and you just know the people running it are passionate. There are no assigned seats, so you risk being in proximity to Falmouth soccer moms who won't slide over one seat to make room. Still, there's something charming about this quaint theater, with none of the stuffiness of Merrill. I'll be back.

Maybe 200+ seats. You can hear and see from every seat. If you are super excited about seeing an act that is coming there, I strongly recommend getting tickets. Make sure you get there early, as most shows are seat yo self. They have a bar with wine, beer, and snacks. There are also 5 or 6 restaurants in the vicinity that are great for pre-show tapas or appetizers. There is no parking lot, so it's on street parking in the super popular "East End". Give yourself a lot of time for driving around and scoping out a spot.

Lovely visit to the Portland Observatory…read more We had intended on a self-tour but were told that self tours would start at 4:30pm...and that before that time, you would have to take a toured guide up the tower. As there was a scheduled guide about to start soon...we opted to take the guided tour. At that time (mid-week in late August around 12pm) there were only four of us on that tour. Our tour guide, an older woman, was wonderful. As we ascended the tower during the 45-minute tour, we stopped off at each floor and she explained a bit about the tower and its history. Lots of interesting facts! We made it to the top to take in some amazing views of the area. Tours are $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6-16 and free for those 5 and under. The stairs (there are about 100) throughout the tower are spiral-ish...so be careful of your foot placement on the narrowed parts of each step while ascending and descending. Street parking signs can be a bit tricky in the area reading "...no parking on the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th ___day of the month..." Be sure to properly read those signs and park accordingly.

The history itself is cool enough: this was a lookout for ships coming into the harbor before radio, and is the oldest currently standing in the USA. But I really appreciated the elevation for getting a good look of the downtown and harbor area, walking around the tower in the breeze and seeing the ocean peaking through the islands in the harbor. Worth the $10 to the top. (Note: the stairs are steep and there's no room inside for an elevator. We're talking large curving internal staircases. Maybe not for those with mobility issues.)

And they have lots of great books even some brand new ones! They seem to have lots of events for children as well. Glad this is the library in my town!

A work in…read moreprogress The Walker Memorial Library is Westbrook was constructed back in 1894 from private donations from the Walker family. Lots of libraries during that time period were built by money from individual citizens or families. The library is lovely from the outside, a huge and looming Gothic type of structure that was typical of the time. And like many lovely libraries built over a century ago soon proved to be too small so various additions were added over the years. The library is once again being renovated to make it more efficient and user friendly for the twenty first century. Unfortunately that means the very old part is going to be closed to the public for a while. Too bad, because as far as I'm concerted that is the best part. The library still is pretty cool but not nearly as large as it looks from the outside. Still has just about everything you would expect from a library but you kind of have to put up with the construction being done. Hard to really give this library it's full due. It does have some very cool windows, lots of flowers both inside and out and some friendly librarians. Not a whole lot of books and other materials or cool places to sit but then a large portion of the cool library isn't available. Hopefully the money will be raised and the work finally completed and the venerable, historic and lovely old library will once again be ready to continues into the next century.

Our guide had deadpan humor... or maybe…read morethat's DEAD-pan humor... he says he hasn't seen a ghost there in the 200 years he's been there! ;P I've never been to that area of the country and he has fascinating tales about some of the "residents" and gave us insight into the many carvings used long-ago. Enjoyed it & will DEFINITELY visit if/when I visit the area in the future!

Books scopes and…read moreHulk The Falmouth Library was opened in 1952 after the Library Association purchased a private home and converted it into a library. After several additions and renovations it now is a pleasant and spacious place that continues to serve the town and it's people. The Falmouth Library is one of those libraries with all kinds of cool stuff inside. Some serious, some fun and some stuff just whimsical and foolish. The kids section is obvious well used by the local ankle bitters and is a place to play, have fun, and perhaps even learn a thing of two. The library has a community room in the basement and even has a little telescope patrons can rent out. Falmouth is a library with a whole lot to do. Pretty amazing for a town of only 11,000 people.

Shevenell Park is a small park in downtown Biddeford that apparently came into existence when a…read morebuilding was taken down. For many years it was little more than an empty lot with broken glass and the usual garbage that accumulates when no one's watching, but a few years ago some grant money appeared and the lot was cleaned up. Trees were planted, benches were built, and some tables and chairs showed up. Now it's a spot where there are concerts every Wednesday in the park, people drop by to eat their lunch, and the police frequently walk through. There's nothing about the park that's going to put it on the cover of Architectural Digest, but it's one of a hundred little things that can turn a small downtown from a dreary and depressing wasteland into a place where people want to work and live. Not all of those 100 things have been done yet and there's always some guy within a few blocks asking people for spare change, but it's nice to see progress. If you're near Biddeford between 5:30 and 7:00 on a Wednesday night in the summer, check out the music and then walk to one of the nearby restaurants for dinner. Shevenell Park is okay, and that's worth three stars. Actually it's a little more than okay but Yelp won't let me give it 3.5 stars.
