Its not the home of the…read morePartridge Family and there is no multi coloured bus parked anywhere within the vicinity - although it would be fun if there was. Rather Partridge House is a beautiful old community home, originally built in 1899 for a Mrs Elinor Varley. The house is today set amidst stunning gardens and grounds and is used these days predominantly as a venue for weddings. Partridge house can also be hired for all sorts of events and is home to various community groups and organisations. If you're looking at hiring the venue, it will seat 80 people for a sit down function or can take 130 for a cocktail party. Take special note of the fountain in front of the house as a location for you photos. It was donated to the owner by former Adelaide Mayor and state pollie, William Townsend back in 1877. Fast forward a hundred years or so to the early 1970's, in fact around the same time TV's The Partridge Family was making it big, and there was talk of demolishing Partridge House and using the land to establish housing. Thank heavens, the then Glenelg Council decided to buy and restore the historic site instead. The beautiful gardens and grounds are open to the public every day, but the house is closed.

Major Fail! Where to…read morestart? We recieved a flyer in the mail promoting the new Glenelg Club. It stated that it does breakfast on Saturday's, kids eat free Saturday and kids can run around on the oval. Perfect, or so we thought. Got there and there was seating outside but no shade, meaning we had to sit inside as we would've been burnt to a crisp out there. The kids couldn't run around on the oval as there were guys out there getting ready for a cricket match. Totally understand that it's a sporting venue, but don't advertise that the kids can run on the oval if they can't. Then we tried to order and were informed that kids only eat free during lunch and dinner (it didn't state this on the flyer, or on the sign in their dining room). It was only 15 minutes before the lunch menu started so when it hit 11 we again tried to order for the kids. We were then told (by the same lady as before) that kids only eat free during dinner. So not impressed. Clearly it's a scam designed to get people in the door. There are 6 items on the breakfast menu, one of which is an avocado bruschetta. I tried to order this but was told they had run out of avocado. Considering there was only 1 other table full in the whole place I don't think they had just run out. Having a limited menu is fine, but if you're going to have a limited menu you need to have it all available. Between us we ordered 4 breakfasts, 2 eggs florentine and 2 bacon and eggs (one with extra bacon). 1 of each came out after about 15 minutes. The extra bacon on the bacon and eggs was missing. We were waiting for the other 2 meals before starting. After about 10 minutes the waitress offered to put our plates under the warming lights while we waited. I asked how long the other meals would be and she went to check. We were only a couple metres away from the kitchen pass so we heard the conversation. Waitress: "How much longer will the eggs florentine be?" Chef: "Was there another?" So of course we started eating since they had to start from scratch on the other meals. This is a plus (and the only one from the whole experience) the food was actually really tasty. Flavours were good. Too bad my poached egg was hardboiled, not slightly overcooked but completely rock hard! After another 15-20 minutes the other 2 meals finally arrived. The extra bacon that had been ordered for the bacon and eggs ended up on the eggs florentine. The poached egg on that dish was cooked perfectly. The scrambled eggs on the bacon and eggs were stone cold though. She must have cooked it first and then left it sitting there while she did the eggs florentine. There was also only 1/3 as much scrambled egg as there was on the first dish. There was no consistency at all. There was only 1 chef on and she was on her mobile phone while she was cooking. It looked really unprofessional. There was no difference in size between a cappuccino and a mug of cappuccino and the 3rd cappuccino didn't show up until we reminded them about it. The whole experience was so so disappointing. I really wanted to love The Glenelg Club, but it was a trainwreck! It could be so good, it's got great potential, but it has a long way to go to even be considered okay. The flavour of the food was good, and the prices were very reasonable, but everything else needs to be majorly overhauled. I won't be going back there anytime soon. I hate to say this, but don't waste your time or your money.

Cuckoo is just a nice, unassuming place to drink, dance and chat. Grey on the outside and red on the inside (like a sick pigeon), Cuckoo is surprisingly cosy. Hanging lamps, couches and red walls, decorated with illustrations done in a continuous white line. Recently Cuckoo has been hosting the odd live music gig, which is a nice addition to their usual range of house/techno/dance DJs. Keep an eye out for drink specials advertised on their Facebook page - jugs of long island ice tea and longnecks.

But that's about as far as the "it has so much potential" goes. Friday night 10pm, this place was empty, apart from a patron hosting a small gathering that meant that the entire bar had to listen to her music from her iPod the whole time. Chloe steps up to the bar and proceeds to wait 10 minutes to be served. Not a problem if there was a line up to the bar, but no this place was a mental ward kind of quiet. She is then served and told "why get a cocktail for $5 more when you can get a whole jug of the stuff for $15?" Things maybe looking up she thought... No joke, 10 minutes later still standing at the bar are Chloe's jugs of cocktails (Long Island Iced Tea and Elderflower Power), minus a few key ingredients, are served. They walk across a sticky floor, to some sticky tables in the sticky black nightclub. Chloe sips her Elderflower Cocktail to only taste sugar and soda with some apple chunks in it. Her partner sips his Long Island Iced Tea to only taste soda and perhaps a hint of rum? Party of 2 proceeds to exit. Somehow this story just works better in 3rd person. Perhaps I should have been drunker? Perhaps I should have appreciated the cheap sugar water for the value it was? But really... Adelaide does better than this and I'm not not surprised why it was dead on one of the busiest nights of the week.

Helen, the driving force behind Marleston, is a netball missionary. She may have even invented her…read moreown sport, leagueball. In any case, Marleston is the home of leagueball, a confusing version of netball designed to speed up the game and weed out the weins who can't keep up. Helen and the volunteers go way over and above to create a happening sports club that's like a big netball family. Lighted outdoor courts. Patient umpires. Double the necessary parking. Womens netball is played Monday nights, mixed on Tuesdays. Call to enquire about leagueball, although perhaps stick to netball first. The clubhouse is like a log cabin with a bar and a canteen. I could see it as a good venue to hire for parties as you could make as much noise as you like without disturbing anyone. My favourite part of playing netball is having your nails checked. And as Helen says, "you can play netball in sports gloves, no need to shorten your nails." I'll have to try that sometime.
