The cafe itself has been there for ages, I remember coming here first when I started dating my husband 9 years ago, we ordered the mini pancakes (they call them something else) and it was under $8 which was a bargain I thought until I saw what size they were. Tiny! Not sure it was worth even that much. Tasty they were though. Very tasty... but there just weren't enough of the little round taste delights to go around our hungry mouths. A lot of people have coffee here and the cakes are very average for the prices they charge. The coffee isn't great, it's not bad though. Although this might be the case, one thing has been true, they are always consistent. It's a cafe in need of a makeover I think, but as it stands, is a great little sit down place to rest your weary feet if you're ever on the northside.

Though Finnegans is essentially a cake-and-coffee shop, they also serve meals here. On the down side, the meals are not Finnegans' strong point. On my last visit out with an old friend, we both received our meals after a lengthy half-hour wait (though admittedly the cafe was packed) and both were sub-standard. I'd ordered the breakfast (because a decent hot breakfast tastes good at any time of day) and my toast was burnt, but cold, leaving a question mark over how much time my meal spent idle before reaching my table. The yolk of my poached egg had unfortunately hardened, and anyone who loves egg like I do knows what a crime this is. My friend ordered the lasagne, which came with a side salad. Predictably, the salad constituted mostly lettuce and sprouts. The lasagne serving, which I sampled, was mammoth but not great in terms of taste. The lasagne was also very creamy and cheesy - not much meat. The one major upside was my coffee. I ordered a skinny melloccino - and then ordered a second one. Perhaps the sugar in the marshmallows drowned out subtle faults, but if so I couldn't detect them.

The Breakfast Stack is still my current favourite with poached eggs, smashed avo on sourdough, rocket, tomato salsa, Parmesan and balsamic. I always add an extra egg or mushies. The Big Breakfast is still H's favourite and is a generous serve of eggs, smoked bacon, pork chipolatas, hash brown, tomato & rocket served with toast.

They also do breakfast every day and there's no fish to be seen on the breakfast menu. They are only open for dinners on Thursday and Friday nights, the rest of the week they are only open til 5:30pm. Most of the meals are under $15, and they have a lot of options for about $10 including a Steak Sandwich ($10.95), Grilled Chicken Burger ($10.95), Fisherman's Basket ($11.95) and of course: Cod, Chips and Salad for only $9.95! A big fat piece of fish (cod I think, crumbed, battered or grilled to order), traditional thick-cut chips, and a whole lot of fresh greens, tomato, cucumber, red onion and some string carrot on top. And to think I almost gave in to a plate of dodgy bain-marie sludge down at the food court. I noticed quite a few single diners like myself ordering the same, and one old dear chatted to me about how good the food is here, so I'm not the only one impressed. The coffee looked pretty good too, I wish I had room for a coffee and cookie deal ($5.95), but that will have to wait until next time.

They are now conveniently located in the Geebung complex of shops, right across the road from the Geebung Train station. Pop over for a quick coffee before heading to your train, or grab a pack of biscuits on your way to work and surprise your office :) There is plenty of parking in front or up the side street. The owners, Paul and Annie make a range of delicious, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits made with real butter, not margarine. You can taste the difference. Not only do they have this Espresso bar and retail store, but they also sell their biscuits to wholesale clients. Their shortbread sell in 12 packs for $7 and 24 packs for $14. If you stop in for a coffee you can grab a couple of individual biscuits to enjoy there. The flavours on offer are always changing, but some of my favourites are Thai Banana & Manuka Honey, White Choc & Macadamia, Strawberry Chia Seed and Lavender, Quince & Lemon. Shortbread biscuits are their speciality, and they also sell Melting Moments, Petits Fours and gluten free Macaroons.

Staff were very friendly and helpful, considering I ordered breakfast 15 minutes before it was over. The coffee I ordered came out as nothing short of excellent and the food hit the spot with my tastebuds. It was definitely enjoyable going from coffee to my meal and back without any interference on the flavours that this cafe has managed to capture and harness.
