They are always warm and friendly. Dr. Cameron is very friendly and super knowledgeable about her profession. I was having a lot of issues with my eyes for the past year and having chronic headaches. She informed me that not only had my vision changed, I had astigmatism, and that I was probably experiencing headaches due to my eyes straining and overcompensating. She did an exam and recommended new lens to correct these issues. Wow, what a game changer! I can see clearly now and I'm no longer experiencing daily headaches. CustomEyes in Roscoe Village provided me with the best eyewear prescription experience ever. To my detriment I delay updating my prescription. The experience of updating and upgrading my eyewear has always been boring and disappointing. My partner convinced me to get my eyewear from CustomEyes. He loves the place. I have to say, the service all around was grand. Chuck Stephenson in particular impacted my experience. He chose the coolest eye wear for me. I asked myself, "How did he know right away I would like this pair!?" I work with clients via videoconferencing all day long. I have to hand it to the manager Nicole at this particular location. When I was at my whits end and was ready to throw in the towel with my new prescription and the fact that the person helping me was telling me everything was set the way it should be, she stepped up and knew that something wasn't up. This office was really amazing in the first place. They offered to recheck my new prescription I got at a different company all together, and sure enough, it was way off. I picked out a frame and Sam was really great at making sure I got a frame I really liked, but the moment I got the frames back and I knew something was not right, Nicole stepped up and pulled out all of her tricks. Long story short, she measured all aspects of the way the glasses sit on my face and had the lab create new lenses with the measurements. When I got the frames back, they were perfect! I was a first-timer here a few weeks ago and felt compelled to sing their praises. Dr. Jen is awesome and so are the rest of the girls that run the office. I have a very unique prescription and Dr. Jen handled it with ease - even being my first visit. The staff is very efficient, friendly as hell and know what they're talking about....you do not need to go to a downtown eye doc they got the eye game on lock on the North Side. I honestly think I purchased my favorite pair of glasses ever here via Nicole's advice and opinions from the rest of the ladies in the shop. I've seriously been wearing the same pair of fugly glasses since high school! I've meant to get new ones for years now (especially since they are falling apart), but haven't wanted to spend the $$ since I only wear them when I drive. My hubby and I were walking by Custom Eyes and decided to stop in. I was trying on some glasses that were only slightly better than my 12 yr old "driving glasses." Fortunately, a lovely sales associate by the name of Kate stopped me because she could tell I needed serious help. Minutes later she helped me find a few pairs of glasses that were actually cute enough to wear in public. Kate also handpicked a few for my hubby and he fell in love with a pair that were (in my opinion) way too geek chic for his conservative look. He's been talking about how cool they were all week so I have a feeling I may lose this battle and he'll be back for them. We left without glasses because we wanted see if our vision insurance plan would cover any of the cost...and it looks like I may be in luck. Chuck scoured the stock to see if he could find a frame that would fit his lenses, and struck upon my son's exact frame in his size! Oh how I wish my employer still provided me with vision insurance so I could come back here once a year! I started going to the Custom Eyes on Southport for my annual vision tests and contact purchases about 3 years ago. Dr. Crumbliss was always great in explaining everything and answering every question in full detail. I never felt rushed or nervous about any eye issues I was having. Because of my good experiences there, when I decided that 2010 would be the year of Lasik and seeing clearly for the first time since I was in 2nd grade and got my first pair of bright blue, plastic frames. I headed into the Roscoe location of Custom Eyes for a consultation with Dr. Jen Shoudis. She was quick, efficient and so very friendly. I was mostly excited about the possible surgery, but she took time to explain everything and even emailed me after the appointment after confirming that I'd be able to get a $1,000 discount even without eye insurance for my surgery at Kraff. She was thorough and excited for me herself! As the surgery came closer, I had to go back in for another exam and this time saw Dr. Crumbliss at the Roscoe location (I think he was covering that day since he's usually at the Southport location.). Again, I had questions I didn't even know I'd had answered and he took a lot of time to explain any possible issues there might be with the surgery without scaring me at all. So appreciative. Custom Eyes also has a partnership with Kraff Eye Institute who did my Lasik that allows you to go to your local Custom Eyes branch for follow-up exams instead of hauling your butt downtown for the check-ups. Convenience? Yes, please! Last week I had my 1 week follow-up exam and had all my concerns addressed by Dr. Shoudis. Again, she took time to talk to me and even recommended a nighttime eye ointment to help with my dry eyes (and gave me a coupon!). It has made all the difference. Today, almost 2 weeks after my surgery, I'm feeling great, have 20/20 vision and am happy to have a doctor I feel I can call with any questions and have them answered quickly and happily. I have been going to CustomEyes on Roscoe since moving to Roscoe Village in 2010, and previously purchased glasses from the Southport location. CustomEyes is exactly what you'd want from your "neighborhood" eye doctor's office. The staff is incredibly friendly -- Nicole at the front desk knows me by name whenever I need to stop in or call -- and they are always incredibly quick to return calls or online requests. I have had several situations over the years where I've needed to see Dr. Jen same day, and they ALWAYS squeeze me into her schedule. Dr. Jen is very professional, knowledgeable and friendly -- she explains everything she's doing and takes her time during exams. When I developed sensitivity issues with contacts, she was super patient in helping me try out various other options until we found ones that fit comfortably and didn't irritate my eyes. The optical shop has a huge array of high-quality frames and sunglasses. The Robert Marc frames I bought years ago were pricey, but have lasted me FOREVER. This place is the best! Went in for my first visit since moving to the neighborhood and had a great experience. I initially went to Custom Eyes because it was only steps from my apartment, but quickly realized it was much more than a convenience. I waited to write this review, because I wanted to go back just to get my eyeglass prescription and take it elsewhere. This was my second visit to Custom Eyes in about 2 years. I went for an eye exam because I lost my glasses several months ago. Since glasses are not cheap, even with good insurance, I'm just now getting around to getting the replacements. On my prior visit I got contacts that hurt so bad that I never wore them. My biggest complaint is the front desk staff, just because for some reason, they make me feel uncomfortable. I sort of felt like I was at a bad used car dealership with a pushy girl trying to sell me overpriced items. Honestly, I don't want $500 glasses even if my insurance gives me a credit on the frames, and I don't know the Armani line up at a department store, nor do I care. I will say the actual eye doctor I saw was really nice and gentle, and I would consider going back to see her, but I'll probably never go back there due to the multiple bad experiences. Came by for my yearly checkup. They're really friendly, and they know their customers. I did not get my glasses there last time, because I wanted something more funky (and I went to SEE as stated in my previous review). They remembered and when they say my glasses, they said they liked that design but wouldn't serve well for the market they have. Then I got my appointment, and went smooth. Very efficient. I've been to Custom Eyes twice and the Doctors are super friendly, causal and quick. I was in and out in 25 minutes. They don't mess around! Just to be clear, I didn't feel rushed, I just had a simple exam and my prescription didn't change this time. I'm sure if you needed more time, they would gladly accommodate you. What i really liked is that the Dr. talked to me while doing the exam. She told me what she was doing, how things looked etc. To me, there is nothing worse than hearing your Dr. go "hmmm" or just be silent during an exam. It drives me nuts..tell me what you see please! Also, I never felt like they were trying to sell me stuff; a refreshing change of pace in customer service world. I just needed a simple eye exam and contact lens fitting, nothing more. The doctor is very personable and explains everything she is doing such that a goof like me can understand. The gal who worked with me to pick out frames was incredibly patient and didn't poke fun when I showed how incredibly picky I am with my tastes. I came here after finding them through the VSP approved list. Both receptionists that day were very nice and one even told me about her experience working at America's Best (where I used to go when I was part of the eye-care club). She remembered what contact lenses they used, which helped when the other receptionist was trying to fill my order (there were only 2 types to chose from, due to my astigmatism). I forget which doctor I saw, but he was young and REALLY nice. Best eye exam I've ever had, and I always hated them because at America's Best they were horrrrrible, but he eased my fears and answered all of my questions thoroughly. The receptionist was honest when I asked her what the better deal was (to go for the glasses) since my insurance cut the cost of either glasses OR contacts drastically. I ended up picking up some really nice frames and it was about $250 or so (which is what I've paid at America's Best for crap) and without my insurance it would have been over $500. Lucky for me, my employer at the time had a flexible spending account, so I had money on there to cover it...so I splurged on a nice pair of frames for once. I rarely used to wear my glasses, but now I find myself switching it up more often. There was one receptionist (I've seen 3 different ones) that I felt was a little distracted, but honestly, I really liked this place and was glad I chose it. read more

I get my eye exams and glasses here, and so do my kids. They're Type 1 Diabetics, and need good records of any retinal or inner eye blood vessel changes that might give us an early warning of eye damage from fluctuations in blood glucose. The retinal camera (and Dr. Jen) allows us access to very detailed maps of their inner eyes. For diabetics, it's vital to catch these changes. We've been very happy with Dr. Jen and Custom Eyes, especially because both kids have needed new lenses in their glasses six months after getting them (growth spurts can affect eyesight), and Custom Eyes has provided new lenses without charge after these prescription changes. Luckily I have perfect vision, so my visits here are not for glasses or contacts. But for some reason my eyeballs are magnets for small flying objects and I have several cornel abrasions that have needed to be looked at. I love Custom Eyes. They might not love me, but boy do I love them! I used to go to an eye Dr. in University Village and he was great, but I recently moved to Roscoe Village and it was just too much traveling for me to get down there. So glad I switched. First - Dr. Shoudis was fantastic. If you can fail an eye test, I do. I just can't seem to figure out which one is better, 1 or 2, 3 or 4 and it stresses me out. Anyhow, she was super patient while I figured it out, ended up not being able to see out of one eye, and fixed it so I could. Now, on to those girls up front. Megan worked with me - super great! She picked out about 20 pairs of frames she thought would be awesome. Together we narrowed it down to 2 frames. She had great opinions and we agreed on what looked best after listening to my thoughts on others. I left buying one whole new set of glasses and new lenses for an old pair. I couldn't stop thinking about the other pair I had it narrowed down to. I just called back tonight and even though they already put the order in and shipped my old frames away - they got me the other pair of frames. I like this place!! I've been going to Target Optical for a few years because... well, because I'm always at Target for something else and it was quite convenient. There's something odd about the back wall of an optometrists office being shared with a Pizza Hut Express... This was a refreshing change of pace! I didn't check out their glasses (because I have the coolest pair ever), but they had a sweet-looking selection. Next time my prescription changes and I update, I'll be looking here for some snazzy specs. My visit was efficient and pleasant. I was in for a routine exam and it turns out my prescription hasn't changed! I reordered my contacts through my insurance and they were in within a week! They were also super awesome in watching out for a rebate for my contacts as well - something I never expected! Kudos to this awesome staff for being so on top of things! I went in for my first ever eye exam. Im in my late 30s and have never required glasses or contacts, so I wasn't sure what to expect.
