If I could give 0 stars, I would. I have been going to Custom Eyes in Roscoe Village since 2009 and downtown since 2010 and have had absolutely phenomenal experiences at both locations. The staff were lovely, the service wonderful, and the glasses beautiful. When I moved to Wilmette, I found this was the closest location to my new home, and I will never go back after what I experienced. My husband went first, and told me the staff were obnoxious and aggressive about selling glasses, which was the opposite of our experiences over the last 15+years at the other locations. I went to see for myself, and completely agree. The woman was rude, pushy, and judgmental. When I told her I wanted a second pair and therefore did not want to spend a lot, she got very nasty and rude, and bristled at my decision. When I came to pick up my glasses, she completely ignored me, turning her attention to shoppers and those waiting to see the doctor who obviously did not need to be helped. Her behavior was classless and rude, and she cheapened the experience when clearly this establishment has beautiful items and is part of a lovely larger chain. Evanston, you can learn a lot from the Southport, Roscoe, and LaSalle locations - they have it together! Your nastiness and judgement have no place in such a sweet neighborhood. Please treat customers kindly and respectfully and reserve your judgement for your own purchases. read more

Oh how I love CustomEyes. When my off-the-shelf readers went to 3.5 and my long distance was no longer perfect, it was time for progressives. I stopped in at lots of shops and after a visit to CustomEyes I never looked back. The eye business there is personal -- it's about expertise, customer service, and looking good. I cannot believe how many compliments I continue to get on the glasses I've bought at CustomEyes. Manager Laura is wonderful and her staff is a warm and caring bunch. Patient, too! After my first time, everyone in the shop knew my preferences. They are each expert at finding the glasses not that simply look good but that look great. Dr. Hansen wasn't nice during my exam visit I felt like he didn't value me as a customer by recommending me to go elsewhere for eye exams.

I always have a positive experience at Custom Eyes Evanston. What keeps me coming back again and again to Custom Eyes is the above and beyond Customer Service. Admittedly, I am a challenging customer, but Laura never makes me feel that way. She always spends as much time with me as I need. She does everything possible to make sure I'm completely satisfied. Custom Eyes has a wide variety of eyewear brands and an excellent selection of frames for each of the brands. My husband & I always find frames that we really love when shopping there. I don't live close to Custom Eyes Evanston but find that it's always worth traveling to this optical shop, which to me exemplifies the way a quality business should be run. read more

The eye doctor here is wonderful, and he gets a 5-star review. It's also worth noting that the shop is very clean and has good COVID protocols in place. They also have a nice selection of attractive (but pricey) frames. Unfortunately, the sales help just isn't as friendly or accommodating as they used to be. Perhaps it's the stress of the times but it's worth noting as it can be a turn-off for customers. read more

Custom Eyes is the best Eye care - no doubt! I have had several situations where the staff has gone above and beyond. I was having a vision issue on New Years Eve- they managed to get me in ASAP! Not only does this place stand out with fashionable on-trend frames, the people who work there are the best. Very knowledgeable about frames and with low pressure personalities. I called just before closing to ask about replacing the missing nose piece to my frames, and they took me right away. I offered to pay for this service, since the optical place where I had bought the glasses is far away and not open at a convenient time for me. And they are a block from my home in Evanston. But they insisted on not being paid. I did refer a friend here recently who said they picked out a pair of cool purple frames she would not have thought to choose on her own. read more

This was my first visit. This neighborhood optometrist office provided me one of the best experiences ever. Casey was very knowledgeable during my examination and was able to recommend great solutions for my constant dry eyes. The gem of the location is Sarah the optician, she represents the business well and has great fashion sense. During my visit she was able to recommend numerous styles and made me feel at home with simple gestures and her honest opinions on tough choices when I tried on frames. I went to custom eyes for new glasses. Found great frames, Dr. Austin was terrific and staff courteous. Got my new glasses and when vision was slightly off, they had me see Dr. Austin again and he was just as great as he was the first time. He said it was off slightly and between that and a needed adjustment to the focal point ... enough to change the lenses. When I got the glasses back, I thanked them profusely and went on my merry way. They told me that sometimes an adjustment to fit behind my ears, etc. might be necessary and not to hesitate to come back. Very nice. I told my friend and she went there and got two pair of glasses based on my recommendation. Several weeks went by and I was still getting headaches and noticed my nose was really sore and the nose pads were pinching so I called to see if they could adjust the nose piece. I brought my old glasses for comparison. The woman wasn't as nice this time. I got the impression I interrupted a serious conversation, although did have an appointment. She said there was no comparison between frames, these glasses are heavier and I just need to live with it. Her tone was "blaming" as if I created the problem. I find that is the response you get from someone who doesn't care so I firmly indicated that I had "lived with it" and wanted to see if they could adjust the nose pads. She tinkered with it a bit, and I could tell it was still bothering me so asked if she could change out the nose pieces on my old glasses with the new and she said no, they don't fit. She did have round ones that she could try from that manufacturer so agreed to do it. The glasses came back with thick round pads that are visible and not half as attractive but i thought if it fit better it might be worth it ... so I agreed and left. And candidly, I figured we were both not in the best mood so better to try another day. I got home and looked in the mirror and they are crooked. I'm back to wearing my old glasses until I can figure this out. I would have given them 5 stars prior to today. Today was a one. $600 down the drain. read more

Called the store to check if they had a specific brand and model of glasses. They didn't, so decided to keep looking elsewhere. 10 minutes later, I receive a call from the very pleasant lady I spoke to earlier letting me know that their store on LaSalle St may have the glasses. Great unexpected and proactive service. I was surprised in a very good way. Went to the LaSalle store and they did not have the glasses; however, their selection is nicely curated and I ended up buying a different pair. The service and fitting was great and my entirely family will go to the Evanston location for exams and glasses. A little more expensive than some other eyeglass shops but well worth the incrementally higher cost for stellar customer treatment. read more

This location is fantastic! Booking my appointment was a breeze, and the location is pretty easy to get to. Dr. Casey was very thorough in making sure we dialed in my prescription correctly and quickly without too much jargon or discomfort. Their frame selection is also incredible. Plenty of staples as well as some very stylish and modern frames without being overwhelming. Sarah and Amanda were a huge help and could spot what frames would look best from just a glance. It was very easy and comfortable to try on pairs with these experts by my side. The cost breakdown to me and my insurance was also very nice to see and a thoughtful touch. Can't say enough good things about this location. For years, optometrists have mentioned something odd they were seeing on the surface of my corneas, but they all told me it was probably inflammation caused by dry eyes. They would always suggest steroids, which did nothing. Dr. Sculley was the only doctor I've been to who insisted I go see a corneal specialist because he felt it was more of a concern. I ended up being diagnosed with a pretty rare degenerative condition (at 33 years old) and was able to get a procedure done that has dramatically improved my eyesight. When my eye finally healed, I went back to see him for a new prescription, and he spent a lot of time with me talking about the diagnosis and procedure. He was genuinely interested in my health, and I felt really cared for by him and his employees. I also had a great experience with their optical shop and got some new glasses that feel super high quality for not much more than I normally pay at Warby Parker. They've got a patient for life with me! I definitely recommend Custom Eyes, and even more so, Dr. Sculley! read more
