You're pretty much left with super expensive rooms or hostels, and I'm too old to be living the hostel lifestyle. Everything I read said don't stay in Mestre because you're not in the heart of Venice and it doesn't feel like Venice since you're not water locked. After reading TripAdvisor reviews, I decided on Legrenzi Rooms and I ended up loving the hotel and Mestre! Location: -It's about a 3 minute walk to the Carducci bus station and about 5 minutes to walk to the Mestre Central tram station where it will take you about 20 minutes to get to Venice. -There is also a grocery store called Simply about a 3 minute walk away where you can pick up water before heading to Venice. -Right outside of the hotel, there are 3 casual bars/eateries if you don't feel like walking. -Piazza Ferretto is the main square and it's about a 5 minute walk away where you will find lots of cafes and restaurants. The square itself is charming, clean, and safe! Rooms: -There are only 9 rooms in this small, yet modern B&B. Unlike other European hotels, I didn't feel cramped and there was actually room to put your luggage and hang up your clothes. The bathroom was clean and the rain shower felt great after a long day of walking around Venice. -There is a mini fridge in the room, so I was able to buy some goodies at the store and keep it in the room. -Wifi is free and I didn't have problems with the speed. Since it's the summer, there isn't a comforter on the bed, but they do have one stowed away if you need it (you won't). The AC was also strong, which was a welcome relief after a day of walking around hot Venice. It was also quiet and our room looked out onto the cute courtyard. Service: -The employees here are nice and helpful! They speak English and will help you with anything you need. -Breakfast is included and the breakfast spread was plentiful with fresh juices, natural yogurts, fruit, pastries, eggs, cheese, cold cuts, cereal, bread, tea, and cappuccino. Bottom Line: -If you're looking to save money, but still want a nice B&B and don't mind not being in the heart of Venice then you should definitely book a room at Legrenzi!

Alessandro and Erico(sp) was SO helpful in trying to locate my lost luggage and even changed our train reservations for us to Florence since our baggage hadn't yet arrived. The room was clean and unique with the loft bedroom. It is small but totally worth the price we paid. I would definitely recommend it to someone that doesn't need a fancy hotel with room service and want to save some money on their Italian getaway.

I prefer the fluffy kind, but they are still really nice. But there are a bunch of odd buttons that could have been updated years ago. For instance there are no USB charging plugs and there are no adapters in the room. Also there is no shampoo, conditioner, lotion or tissue in the room. Is that a prerequisite for a star or something? There's a speaker on the wall that started static-ing while I was trying to sleep. It took me forever to figure out that the light above the TV only went off when you pushed the desk in. And there is this crazy ass tulip looking thing in the bathroom that in the 80s might have been a cool focus lamp for tweezing my whiskers, but now is just in my way. Also the shower is hella dangerous. It's no surprise that it has a bunch of holes to take a Jacuzzi bath, which is the grossest thing in the world to do in a hotel but, I digress.... I didn't love the breakfast, maybe because some people have no idea how to politely use a Buffet. You don't pick up the food with your hands or scrape food off of a serving spoon with your thumb. But that's the tourists' fault for being tacky, not the hotel. I love the location. It's away from the hubbub, but close enough to get to everything you want to see.

And located about 5 minutes (walking) to the main square (Piazza San Marco/St. Marks) The hotel is charming! Every detail - even down to the hefty metal keys and key chains they give you when you check in. Behind the front desk is a wall of keys, when you leave for the day you leave your key with the staff. Who needs one of those silly, modern, key cards!? Our room, located on the top floor, offered up stunning views of Canale de S. Marco, the bell tower at at the square and the entrance to the Grande Canal. The room itself was simple and lovely and allowed the focus to be the view with three huge windows! The bathroom, consisting of marble tiles, a huge shower, a large vanity, was also one of the best we experienced while traveling. Other features in the room included a comfy bed, flat screen tv, and air conditioning - although we opted to open the windows and sleep with the Venetian breeze flowing all night long. We started each morning with breakfast on the main floor.... plenty of croissants and pastries to choose from. And ended each night with a glass of wine on the rooftop deck... watching the cruise ships come through the canal. While the majority of our stay was fantastic, there were a few negatives... - WiFi was very spotty. We found the best place to access it was down in the lobby. - The bar was just OK, despite being in Italy they had a very sad selection of wine. - We were also told by hotel staff that we weren't "allowed" to hang out on the patio unless we ordered something.... Even though we were guests at the hotel. I thought that was completely ridiculous. The few negatives don't outweigh all the positives that Hotel Gabrielli offer. The hotel front desk staff speak a variety of languages, Italian, French, English. The hotel is easy to get to from the auto boats (public transportation of Venice). For the auto boats stop at Arsenal or S. Marco stops. The rooftop bar is open from about 6-10pm. They have green spritz! Buffet breakfasts are good and offer meat, eggs, cheeses, juice drinks, cereals, Nutella and fruit. I would 100% return.

While we were hesitant to visit initially based on media reports of extensive flooding, repeated reassurances by the hotel staff persuaded us to go ahead with our visit. So glad we did!! The hotel's location is fantastic, as with almost all buildings in the city, the hotel is located alongside a busy canal in the Cannaregio district - very central to all points of interest and boat taxi stations. The hotel itself is clean and welcoming, although infrastructure struggles to keep up with demand at times. The highlight of our stay was the staff - Fabio, Diego, Sorina and others were simply fantastic!! Very friendly and solicitous/helpful...they made our stay all the more memorable!! Weather was superb, cold but clear and sunny, the city was very clean given the 30-million visitors it receives annually (54,000 Venetians constantly bombarded by hordes of tourists). December is a fantastic time to visit as crowds are thinner (heard that summers can be unbearable due to heat and overcrowding) and all sights are readily accessible. No sign of flooding anywhere!! The hotel rooms were comfortable and clean, complimentary bottled water was a huge bonus. Breakfast was adequate (Continental) but not overly impressive - coffees/hot chocolate/juices etc on demand were most welcome. All in all...had a superb time walking the miles of beautiful alleyways, visiting the islands of Murano and Burano (the latter a fantastically colorful fishermen's village) and ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the glorious sights the city and environs have to offer. It is a family run business and they own the restaurant Da Nino as well as the B&B Da Nina. The son, Massimo and his wife Martina run the hotel while Massimo's Dad runs the restaurant. When we first arrived it was late but the dad at the restaurant helped us get into our hotel and was friendly. Massimo spoke English and showed us where everything was and showed us how to work the coffee machine, door locks, etc. We got the private bedroom with a private bathroom but the bathroom is located outside the bedroom which isn't a problem for us. It has a hairdryer, towels, little shampoo bottles, washing machine/detergent, and is very clean! We had trouble working the washing machine though so ask for instructions if you plan on using it. The breakfast was lacking, just a couple packaged snacks but it's ok because we are located very close to the supermarket "COOP" where we got yogurt, fruit and bottled water. Overall the B&B felt very private, quiet, and close to the action, I'd stay here again.

The hotel is situated in quiet neighborhood near Campo S.S. Apostoli away the crowds but still close to restaurants, shops, a grocery store, San Marco, and a 10 minute walk to vaporetto stops. There is a handy dock outside the entrance to the hotel for water taxis and the hotel staff was able to reserve a water taxi for us for our very early morning departure. We had a great experience at the Hotel Ca d' Oro and look forward to returning there.
