I contacted Deidre for a dinner buffet catering service 1 week before our event (a pretty tight timeline during the wedding season). I was really really impressed by her prompt responses while other competitors got back to me one or two days later- and that's the reason we finally chose D&H. We wanted their traditional buffet and need some customization. So I had several conversations with Deidre to finalize the menu to decide the appetizers and the tastes of entree dishes . She was always very patient to answer my questions and accommodated our needs. Finally the event night was wonderful. The food was fresh and delicious. Background: D and H Catering catered a meal for a wedding I attended. The meal was brunch and was to consist of a relatively basic menu, including eggs, bacon, sausage, omelettes, and waffles, along with fruit and vegetable trays and other garnishes. The bride and groom paid for 85 plates. First, the good: Now for the bad: There were slightly fewer than 85 in attendance, approximately 10-15 of whom were children under the age of 10 who ate very little. Now, mediocre food is not enough to elicit a negative online review from me, but poor customer service and failure to even attempt to provide the agreed upon services are, and that is what I witnessed at this event. 16 people (at least) did not eat. ~20 people only had the option of an omelette because the caterer ran out of all other food options. Bacon, sausage, potatoes. They were short on nearly everything. They brought one tray of potatoes. One tray. For 85 people. Not a comically over-sized tray. Just a standard caterers' tray. Even if your food is sub-par, at the very least make sure you bring enough. As for the food quality, it was not great. It wasn't awful, but really, how hard is brunch? One thing I will point out is that one of the menu items was waffles. At $25/plate for breakfast I feel as though you could reasonably expect, at the very least, freshly made waffles. What they delivered was a box of Eggos (or some generic equivalent). Nothing against Eggos, but if Cora's served Eggo waffles straight out of the toaster they would no longer be in business. I unfortunately can't comment on the quality of the potatoes, bacon, or sausage because I was one of the 18 who only had the option of an omelette. An omelette that I waited nearly 30 minutes for because only one person was manning the omelette station, cooking 1 (sometimes 2) at a time. It should also be mentioned that we were served on paper plates and cleared our own tables. The service provided at the wedding was objectively poor, but it was the handling of the subsequent complaints that really spurred this review. D and H catering was unapologetic for their shortcomings. They fought against any restitution. They accused the attendees of eating too much. They claimed that the paper plate count was an accurate way of determining how many guests were in attendance, as though it was inconceivable that somebody may take more than one paper plate. Simply put, they would not take responsibility for the fact that they did not bring enough food. If you read more reviews on D and H caterers, you will see that this is not the only time they have done something like this. This type of behaviour appears to be a trend. If you are considering hiring them, do your due diligence. Read the reviews. There is a theme. I don't want to see others getting taken for a ride by a less than ethical business. Recently attended a morning wedding, with the post wedding meal being brunch. The wedding was small and intimate having only 80ish people in attendance. They food RAN out before the end of the buffet line!! Approximately 20 guests had nothing to eat! Another portion of the guest were left with only omelets as an option. The company only had 2 people working causing the omelet line to be very slow. The waffles were packaged/frozen waffles not fresh at all. How on earth can you let this happen? Terrible representation from this company! If I could give them ZERO stars I would because running out of food is NOT acceptable from a credible catering company. read more

I attended an event that D & H Catering provided a breakfast buffet and it was not very good. They had 2 small fry pans going cooking omelets for only 2 people at a time so it took forever for the line to move and less than half the people got fed. I believe the cost per person was $27 for breakfast!?!? and there was not enough food for most people to eat, let alone a plate full that would be worth $27.... D&H Catering is a small operation, run by two excellent chefs that used to be part of a larger catering company. This, inherently, has its advantages and disadvantages. We had our 160 person wedding, in April 2015 at the Muttart Conservatory, catered by D&H, and chose them over one of the most recommended and established companies in the city, Bridges. Many of my notes will be a direct comparison of the two. Pros: - The food is the bottom line as to why we chose them, and is, after all, the most important thing. Simply put, it is fantastic. We wanted a diverse menu, serving a gourmet appetizer buffet with items like Pulled Pork Sliders, Thai Red Curry Coconut Mint Rice Balls, and a Mac and Cheese bar. D&H provided a much more creative selection list, and the tasting was much better - reminiscent of a $100 meal at a fine restaurant. While the day-of product wasn't quite as good, some things a bit different too, I'm guessing that's pretty standard with catering large events. Our guests absolutely loved the food at our wedding. - Their prices were lower, probably about 10-20% for the type of menu we were looking at. - The staff they sourced for our event were great, if not a little disorganized as a whole unit, as detailed below. Cons: The big drawback to D&H was the coordination leading up to the event, and organization on the day of. While Bridges made it seem like they would take care of absolutely everything and it would be of zero worry for us, D&H didn't instill the same feeling at the beginning, and that quality carried through to our wedding. Because they are a small operation, the chefs do everything - including planning and communicating with clients. When you're planning a wedding and are in constant contact with multiple vendors, you appreciate when calls and emails are returned in a prompt and complete fashion, and of all the people we relied upon, D&H was the most lacking in this regard. Questions were overlooked, emails not returned until we followed up a week later, and they could be a bit scattered during planning sessions. In their defense, our event WAS high maintenance in that everything had to run right on schedule, our menu was extremely labor intensive, the venue presented a few atypical challenges, and I am very detail-oriented so was demanding from a planning perspective. That said, these were all things discussed in advance and we were assured would be no problem. D&H does much larger events, up to 800 people they told me, but if your event is detail-oriented, you may want to go with a larger operation. We were frustrated on many occasions leading up to the day, and I personally had to do some coordinating minutes before my own ceremony, during cocktail hour, and during dinner because they either didn't have staff in the right place at the right time, or didn't know how something was supposed to run - even though we'd previously communicated this to them before. I would strongly recommend they hire someone that is tasked solely with communicating with clients and coordinating on the day of, as this significantly tarnishes what would otherwise be a great experience, and I believe is separating them from being one of the best in the city. Overall, we were happy with the result and I would still recommend D&H, but only for a simpler, straightforward event. This group has the potential to be great, but need to polish the coordination aspect of their business. As someone who works for a larger catering company, I have high expectations in this area of work. When we began to arrange with D & H for our wedding of 130, I was surprised by the lack of interaction between us. We sent a few brief emails, and met up once but it felt like it went by too briskly. There was no tasting arranged or offered. Nothing was discussed unless we brought it to them. On the day of the wedding, they arrived late, and did not bring any of their own buffet tables or linens. At no point during the period that we were making arrangements with them did they communicate to us that we would need to provide that for them. Contrary to popular wedding order, my Groom and I had the head table eat last, and when we got to the buffet, most of the food was gone. It felt like they just came and then packed up and left as soon as they could. I never interacted with them, I barely saw them. I cannot believe they ran out of food on us, especially considering not all of the guests we paid for showed up. TL;DR The food tasted good. The service was not good at all. My fiancé and I met with business owner Deidre to discuss catering for our summer wedding. She was incredibly prompt in her responses to my inquires and very flexible accommodating our hectic schedules for a first meeting and even offered to meet after hours or come to our home! When we did go in to meet with her (despite it not being a scheduled tasting), she had a delicious food tray prepared unexpectedly (including bacon wrapped steak with horseradish aioli!) because she knew we were coming straight from our work offices. When then sat down and began discussing menu. It was the most personalized service I have ever experienced. She is very passionate about quality food and giving us exactly what we wanted (as we have a large wedding with different tastes, food allergies, etc.). thought I would let you know what to expect if you have D&H Catering for you wedding dinner. we start the dinner late because D&H was late by 45 min my husband and I go up first and no butter for buns 2 salad was in bowls I would put on my dinner table fruit tray was about 12" round 1 tray of veggatables (looked like they vame out of a bag) 1 tray of fresh veggies (again 12" round 1 tray of potatoes ( again looked like the frozen hash browns you get in a bag) 1 tray of meat no selection of choice all medium well done and not a drop of juice in the tray was dry my son came up to me (he is 18) and said there was no food left his table and another had not eaten yet (16 people). We went to the ladies and asked where the rest of the food was she informed us that was all they had but one of them had ran to safeway to get some bag salad and used my buns I had for my late lunch (really are you serious) I recieved a very very small small amount back. The meal to me was not even worth $500. Just wanted to warn future customers about this company reviews do not mean everything I just dont want to see this happen to anyone else. if you would like to know anything else please pm me I would be happy to tell you what I know1st pic is from D&H website, second is what we were served.
