    Halibut

We love the Japanese influence on their traditional French dishes. The sauce that came with the halibut was super rich and just luxurious. No misses on all that we ordered. The raw oysters were pretty good, but a little thin for $36 a dozen.

We came here for a school assignment and did not know what to expect. Let's just say from the atmosphere to the amazing waitstaff (ask for Kelsey) we had the most enjoyable dining experience we have had in a long time. We had the prix fix three course menu, it just kept getting better. Our waitress expertly recommended wine and dishes. We will definitely be coming back.

    Mardi Gras Specials Menu 3-4-2025

Dined here the night of Tuesday 3/4,/2025 to catch the last night of their Mardi Gras Specials Menu! (Good thing you can follow them on Facebook!) It was so great to be back (dined here 10/19/2024, when I met up with 2 friends to celebrate 1 of their birthdays)! Anyway, for appetizers, I had the Braised Beef Cheeks and Crawfish Etouffee; for entree, the Jambalaya; for dessert, the Beignets! Everything was wonderfully, fresh, hearty and delicious! My server, Efraim (who's been with D&J for decades), did a great job taking care of me that night! The place still had its warm, welcome and cozy ambiance (and got much more crowded as it got later, which was impressive to see for a Tuesday night)! Anyway, I definitely will be back!

Last night I celebrate my significant others birthday. The staff was great as well as the food we had. I had the Tuna/Salmon Tartar, she had the French Onion Soup for appetizers. For entree we both choose the Chateaubriand and for dessert the bread pudding. They also brought out a birthday treat of three mini pastries. The ambiance was perfect for the evening.

You can't get better quality for the money - ANYWHERE! This is quite the hidden gem located in a strip mall. The place was packed so reservations are a must. Service was excellent, the cocktails were amazing, and the food fantastic. This was the first time I tried foie gras and it was amazing . The salad was fresh and the chateaubriand was outstanding with a delicious side of potatoes and brocollini. Desserts were prepared as if a bakery were in house making patties from scratch. Loved every minute of the experience!

Grilled Pork Chop. To die for!

How could I miss this amazing French restaurant opened since 1987!!! It is a true gem hidden behind Jewel in Lake Zurich. Everything was outstanding at our tonight's dinner: a warm greeting from the owner, an attentive and not overpowering service at the bar, a lively atmosphere, delicious cocktails, a nice selection of wines and of course food!!! Oh the food... let me tell you more about food. If you see on the restaurant menu sweetbreads, you know you are at the good French restaurant! Initially, I planned to order sweetbreads, but when I saw the special menu, I changed my mind :) My foie gras was served exactly how it is served in France (I could say it about every dish we ordered!) with a very carefully balanced taste and perfectly baked brioche melting in your mouth. My husband's salade lyonnaise was crisp and very tasty. My Atlantic Skatewing was cooked to perfection and served with a classic beurre blanc sauce, the dish was simply astonishing! My husband's grilled pork chop was tender, juicy, full of flavor and nothing comparable to the trivial pork chop at the other restaurants. We finished our epic dinner with a homemade rum and raisins and pistachios ice creams. Wow ! Bravo D&J Bistro!!! We cannot wait to come back! A très bientôt !

My FAVORITE server (and THE MOST highly-requested server at D&J)--Kevin, The Muscles from Brussels!

That said, one of our friends is a foodie like me and loved the menu with plenty of seafood options and he found it challenging to select something as it all looked so good. We started with appetizers of Fire Shrimp, Octopus and Jumbo Crab Cake. We all shared and was absolutely amazing! My wife ordered the Lobster and Shrimp Pasta which she had the week before. Last time it came with a little heat, but this time was a little bland for her but was still very flavorful (so somewhat confusing). FYI the lobster comes in two halved pieces w/ shell (a miniature lobster, not meal sized one) For me, the apps were not enough. I ordered Rice Élan Style w/ 4 Sea Scallops (Arborio rice, butter, sun-dried tomato, spinach, citrus blend, parmigiano reggiano). This was really good and the scallops were so flavorful. I also ordered the Lobster Mac & Cheese. Yes, I was hungry. It was a generous portion and includes chunks of lobster, not like other places where we are searching for where the lobster is hiding. Service was amazing as usual. I expect nothing less. Since it was my foodie friend's first time, they gave him a gift card for a free bruschetta app next time he comes in. It is dimly lit. It not dark as every table has small touch lights. So, apologies for the pics as they may be a little dark. Certainly looking forward to next time!

The cocktails were just as impressive--the dirty martinis were excellent, followed by a great espresso after dinner and a refreshing limoncello dessert wine to finish the evening. The food, drinks, service, and atmosphere all came together to create a fantastic experience. The vibe is warm, inviting, and upscale without feeling pretentious. This is all with plenty of parking, friendly service, attractive looking interior, varied menu, and very reasonable prices for the generous portion sizes. This is one of the nicer hidden gems, as the experience feels a bit more upscale relative to the prices. Food is very good here, if you're looking for well executed comfort food. The food is plated well and colorful, with good textures overall. The vegetables are fresh and meat quality is generally good. Maybe not the most complex versions of each dish I've ever had, but the pricing also reflects this as you're getting elevated versions of familiar dishes at only a few more dollars than a cheap carryout spot. Here are some quick thoughts on the items I tried: Honey Walnut Shrimp - Very generous amounts of shrimp which are large and have a good firmness. This is nice and crispy and the broccoli on the side is fresh. Dry chili chicken - One of many great versions of this dish you can get nearby. This was fairly crispy and not too spicy with a low amount of numbing oil. There was a good ratio of chicken versus chili in this dish. Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs -- Pretty good, good level of fat and there wasn't too much vinegar. It was enjoyable but probably would get something else on a future visit. Wok fried squid - Squid has a good texture, wasn't too firm or chewy and had a good flavor to it. Overall dish is very colorful and i enjoyed the vegetable combination. Sichuan string bean - Quite surprising, excellent flavor and the string beans were very fresh. This was packed with so much umami that it filled in the gap of another meat dish for me. Pea tips - I had the preparation with garlic and the flavor with excellent, with very good quality of vegetables as well. If I ate a fully vegetarian meal, I wouldn't mind having this with the string beans as both were super fresh and full of flavor. Fried fish with sweet sour sauce - This was presented in a very large portion size with tons of fish. This isn't as good as the expensive specialty ones you can get at some other restaurants, but definitely punches well above its weight given the price point. A must have for any lover of sweet and sour seafood as this really hits the spot for that specific crave. Braised pork belly - If I could order only one dish for a meal, this would be it. The meat is crazy tender and the sauce is super flavorful. This is one of the best options for comfort food you can get and you won't be disappointed. Overall, great food and a very nice setup. Bring a group if you can to try a variety of dishes. Make sure to come hungry as you'll get plenty of food no matter what you order.

I took a booth and was given an extensive menu. The server offered chips and salsa. I was brought a small basket with about 10-12 large chips and a small shallow dish of watery commercial grade salsa in the basket with a tablespoon in it. Not having been given any additional plate, I guess I was expected to spoon the salsa onto the chips over the basket, because the dish was too shallow to dip a chip into other than the very tip of each chip. I ordered what I usually order at most Mexican food joints - taco dinner al pastor with onions and cilantro no cheese on anything including the beans. Service was prompt. The beans had cheese on them which I returned, and a dish came back without cheese, except when I took my first fork full, there was a strand of cheese left. The cook had just lifted the cheese off the original dish instead of replating the beans. The rice was formed into a perfect half moon shape on the quite large square plate. That is usually a signal to me that the restaurant is into portion control, as the aesthetics as can be seen from the photo attached make the rice look like a small amount. There was little flavor in the rice but something I did not expect - a slight fish flavor in the rice. Every fork full (only a fork and napkin provided - I guess the spoon from the salsa can be used as double duty) tasted like fish. That was a big minus. Either they use a fish base as part of the rice cooking process, or the cook used the pot for fish and didn't wash the pot prior to cooking rice in it. Or he was using a spoon that he was using for fish as well. Either way, I don't find fish flavored rice appealing. The beans were not puree and also contained whole beans, but were bland. I ordered the tacos with corn tortillas because I like the tortillas a little crispy, but these were somewhat soft. The al pastor meat has plenty of sauce and was minced. The meat sauce was very average in flavor, hardly any spice. Maybe the meat needed salt, but it sure needed something. There were two squirt tubes for sauce on the table, one green and one red. I tried the green sauce, it was too creamy, wasn't spicy and didn't do anything for the tacos. I finally used the remainder of the red salsa from the chips. I was given a few tiny wedges of lime (probably sliced also for the bar drinks) for three tacos, another indication of portion control over focus. I took a photo of this meal, not for reviews, but to show my girlfriend who was out of town what I was eating since she hadn't been here either. So I looked at the photo before leaving, and I then noticed that there were NO onions on the tacos despite asking for onions and cilantro. The kitchen wasn't slammed, so I just chalked it off to further inattentiveness by the cook despite the server's instructions. That may have added to the lack of flavor of the tacos, but it was really the al pastor sauce and seasoning that didn't cut it. All in all, I was disappointed in the meal. I didn't go to my regular place just to give this place a try. It seems the ball was dropped at every turn for this very simple staple meal at a Mexican restaurant. I would give this place a 4 out of 10 for the reasons given above. I wouldn't go again. The food was not terrible, but lacking in flavor, and the cook was obviously not into what he was doing. There are other places close by where the food is superior to theirs.

The restaurant is somewhat newly decorated and had a warm ambience. While the garden salad with blue cheese dressing and the lobster bisque were both a bit bland, the salmon with hollandaise sauce was the best salmon I have ever had. It was fresh and delicious and did not have the "fishy" taste that salmon usually has. The captain's choice with lobster and shrimp was phenomenal. They subbed out the sherry wine sauce with lemon butter sauce per my request. The lobster tail was more than a generous portion. Twice baked potato substitution was small, but fantastic. The custard dessert was fresh and delicious along with a Key lime pie martini. The French martini with the raspberry vodka instead of vanilla was absolutely fantastic too.
