This place was absolutely amazing. You want home made Puerto Rican food without having to travel all the way to Chicago through all that traffic, this is the place to go. I doubt that I would be traveling to Chicago to have my Puerto Rican food again. The rice was absolutely delicious and that's one thing that's hard to find is good Puerto Rican rice. We gave this a try for dinner one evening. We love family-owned places and avoid chains like the plague. Anyway, we started with the island sampler. Tostones were small and over cooked. You could not bite them they were so hard. I asked for a dish that I saw on Yelp, but instead got something completely different. No big deal, because it was tasty. My wife had Pollo a Ajillo. She enjoyed it and said there was good flavor. The boy had Carne Guisada, which he also enjoyed. I also had the island cocunut cake and my wife and kid shared the pina colada chesse cake. Both were delicious! Overall not a bad place to eat. It is exciting to see different cuisines arriving and less chain food joints. read more

I can't even pronounce half of what we ate properly. But it was good, authentic Puerto Rican food. I had an opportunity a few years back to eat some traditional Puerto Rican rice and a pork dish. They serve it here at Da Portable Rican. And it is spot on. The appetizers are good, the wait staff is very friendly and hospitable. The first couple times we tried to eat here the wait was too long for us. The place was busy but it didn't reduce the attention we received. We will go back!! read more

Way too expensive...you have to be very rich..we sat down, notice that the prices were ridiculously high and we said we were leaving and had to pay 13.50 just for soda and we didn't even drink them..the waitress opened my drink before she brought it. If I could rate them 0 stars, I would! Go to Ponce in Chicago, you will pay a hundred dollars here and for the same food 20 at Ponce along with the 10 dollars for gas..big save! read more

This is the best Puerto Rican cuisine I've ever eaten! Each dish was prepared with the highest quality of ingredients and culinary skills. We tried the sweet fried plantains for an appetizer. You just can't go wrong with this selection. You may need to make two orders. They're really hard to share. I went there with a customer for lunch, you walk in and you feel like your in Old San Juan from the beautiful walls that are painted to look like city and the brick floor depicting the streets and the servers dressed in traditional Puerto Rican wear. Stopped by on a whim for some quick carry out. Not knowing much about PR food, we stuck with three orders of pastilillos and an order of tostones. Served with a side salad and seasoned rice, the pastilillos were quite tasty. The tostones were good but the island dipping sauce is what makes it. We'll definitely be up for trying this place again (kids agree) -- maybe eating in to try the drinks and desserts. read more

Upon arriving the staff was cheerful and helpful. The decor was clean and Spartan. Appetizers ( pastelillos and jabarto) were tasty and attractive although a bit salty. For the main course we ordered a pork dish and a beef dish. The soup was I believe beef noodle and although it was cold out the soup sounded inappropriate for the venue. Side salad was fresh with homegrown tasting tomatoes. The beef entrée was tasty and tender and was served with white beans and rice. It also came with a bowl of hearty stew like sauce. Pork dish was ordered with yellow rice and chickpeas. Both rice dishes were very good. The beef was tender and the pork reminded me of Carnitas. Again both very good. The amount of meat on the plates was more than adequate and could have easily made six tacos per plate but needed garnish and a sauce or relish. Skipped desert as the meal was more than adequate. Advertised as fine dinning. So the waitress costumes were a portent to a Caribbean experience but that was it. The food presentation was somber. Table napkins were smaller and thinner than a tissue. Just opened so if the food stays right and they make small improvements this could become a winner. read more

I've gone to this restaurant 3 times in the past month. The first time was AMAZING. Great authentic food, wonderful service. Service is always good but after the last two times my complaint is the arroz con gandules. The first time it was amazing, moist, flavorful - well seasoned and all together wonderful. The last two times the rice has been hard and crunchy???? I don't understand. It is old rice reheated from the truck and served in the restaurant? That is what it tasted like and it was very off putting. Do they not know how to reheat rice correctly? It can be done. I'll go back but I WILL NOT try the arroz con gandules. Most items are great but these is some inconsistency in what comes out of the kitchen. read more
