Be aware of what you pay the Daily Herald, whether by check of credit card!!!! For over 20 years we have subscribed to the Daily Herald and had it delivered to our home daily. It is an excellent paper. But we just canceled our subscription. From January thru October 2022 we have sent 13 checks to the Daily Herald for over $1300 for our "Premium Subscription". We should've realized this sooner- but looking back, we sent multiple checks to the DH in 3 different months. When I called Customer Service, it was explained to me that we pay more often than once-a-month for the 'premium subscription'. What??? Here is a picture of the $140 bill we just received. It covers November 17, 2022 through December 15, 2022. Almost a month... In the middle of the bill, I now see an explanation of the various things they charge extra for. This USED to be the second best paper in Chicago and the best for coverage of the suburbs, especially if you wanted a local coverage. I'd have given it 5 stars in 2010. That was true a decade ago, but I'm not so sure for the last 5 years. However during COVID they drastically reduced the size of the paper, and it's only gotten smaller since while at the same time they have sneakily and not so sneakily increased the price. The sneaky way is to say you have paid for 3 months, but then charge extra for "special editions" that amount to an insert about the size of the TimeOut section and then send you a bill after less than two months. The not so sneaky way is to send a bill that is 50% higher, hoping you won't notice with autopay. Then you have to call and they might offer to reduce it to a 10% increase. I'm seriously thinking about canceling when I realized on Garbage/Recycle Day that the entire week's collection of papers was smaller than a Sunday paper from 15 years ago. Especially during December when everybody was advertising sales. Also there are no more coupons in the Sunday paper. The Wednesday paper has more store ads in it than the Sunday paper, mostly for food stores. The Sunday paper used to pay for itself with coupons for stuff I actually needed to buy. read more

I would give them zero stars if it was an option. Their customer service for subscriptions is a joke. We cancelled services because they wanted to charge $184/month for a $2 paper. When we called to see about re-noegotiating the rates, as we had been solid customers for over 30 years, they basically told us "Oh well, we can't do anything". So that was why we ended up cancelling on the spot. For a while, we just stopped by a gas station to pick up the paper. Fast forward a few months... we received a "We want you back!" offer for ~$24 for a 26 week W/Th/Fr/Su home delivery. Check is cashed, a full month goes by... no paper. Called to speak with customer service again, and they said "That went toward your balance." What balance?! They were still trying to charge for the month of services we cancelled. Shady business practices. Price gouging. Inept customer service employees that have no ability to actually do anything other than take your money. Pick *any* other paper. read more

I used to love this newspaper. It was the best source for local information about the suburbs. I've enjoyed the articles by the journalist over the years, especially Burt Constable. But sadly, the Daily Herald has become extremely left-wing. All a person needs to do is look at the front page photos, and headlines and compare the Democrat national convention with what was published about the Republican national convention. It is frightening to see the way a supposedly reputable news organization is trying to sway public opinion through the use of photos and headlines. I am a person who has voted for both parties based on the quality of the candidates. But lately, headline articles are written as editorials, inserting the emotions and opinions of the author rather than stating facts. It is a sad day for journalism and also for our democracy to see news organizations such as this sliding down the drain. First: Paper is not what it used to be. Content is sub-par. Customer Service is non-existent. Repeated calls to "customer service" were not answered or the call was dropped. Read the fine print on your offer or bill. They will charge you an additional $64.87 per year for "special issues". We are paying for Front Porch Delivery. Never once has it made it to the front door. We call constantly and complain. They don't do anything except credit the extra charge. Why do they offer the service and charge you extra for the service if they are not going to perform the service. We will NOT be renewing our subscription with the Daily Herald. read more

Strongly suggest if you have this newspaper delivered you hold on to your old invoices. Back in November of 2019 I paid an invoice with service dates of 11/28/2019 to 2/19/2020 Two days ago I got another invoice with service dates of 1/30/2020 to 4/22/2020 When I called to tell them that I paid thru 2/19/2020 I got no explanation other than I was getting a really good rate and that the service rates on current invoice are correct.These people are really slick. Have been a subscriber for over 20 years. They keep raising the rate and I've called before to cancel and they drop the rate and talk me out of it. Now if you look at the bills they are double charging for a week in every billing cycle. Look at these bills. I have called and left messages and emailed several times over the last 2 1/2 weeks with no reply. Just filed a complaint with the BBB. I just got another bill after sending a check with a note to cancel. Very nervy. I will not send another dime and don't want to be sent to collections if they won't end service. Looks like I should have checked Yelp before giving the nice man at my door a donation for the charity he was representing. The twelve weeks of newspaper delivery seemed like a perk at the time. It's been nothing but a headache. They didn't stop after twelve weeks. They didn't stop after I placed a vacation hold while trying to get in touch with someone at the DH (whose office hours are simply unreasonable). They didn't stop when I finally was able to cancel the subscription. They only stopped after I received a bill for $67 for newspapers I never wanted. And now when I try to log into my "account" on their website, it says I need to contact a customer service agent. You know, the ones with the terrible hours. Don't subscribe. And don't give "charitable donations" to people canvassing your neighborhood. read more

This use to be a very good company to deal with, Customer service and delivery were always top notch but over the last couple years customer service has gotten horrible and billing ridiculous! I canceled my subscription after being a customer for over 20 years. I was recently sent a bill for almost double what I have been paying called customer service and was told there's nothing we can do about this if you don't want delivery anymore I will cancel your subscription which I did. 3 1/2 months later I receive a bill from them stating I owe them $32 dollars. I call and wait forever and a day for a phone rep and she informs me yes that's your final bill and you owe it for your last 2 weeks of delivery. I ask why it took over 3 months to receive this and she had no answer. I then ask why the bill is $32 for 2 weeks when I had been paying $52 for 10 weeks and canceled as soon as I received the invoice with the rate increase and she said sir your last two weeks were billed as premium service and you owe that amount. I informed her this is why your company is losing so many subscribers and the only response I received was I can take a credit card for your payment when your ready. WE are subscribing for daily herald for last thirty years for home delivery and for last year it was on Auto pay. The card on the auto pay was compromised and we asked Daily herald to send us bill so that we can pay by check. To our utter dismay and surprise the bill was for S163.00 for four weeks. Can some body at Daily herald explain why such huge charge when the paper at new stand cost $16 per week and total of $64/ per four weeks. We were told that 163.00was for three months which make sense but every month the Herald kept sending monthly invoice for $159.00 which we ignored . Finally the delivery stopped and we called and were told that we owe the them $521.27 before delivery could start on July 01,2023 . In the meantime we also paid for July 2023 for weeks. I received my invoice today for a one year renewal of the Daily Herald. It was for $453.40 a 94% increase over last year and 163% over two years ago. Included was a charge for $114.40 for newsprint surcharges, whatever that is, and approximately $78 for 13 premium editions that have nothing to do with News and that I do not want. Just to add insult to injury they are charging me $1.00 to send me a bill for $453.00. There must surely be something that I am missing here. read more

I received a gift subscription which I told the sender to cancel. I have now, months later received a notice of collection for the Daily Herald. I never authorized a subscription, agreed to any terms, and never received a bill or other communication requesting payment. During the brief period of gift subscription 1/3 the time I did not receive a paper, 1/3 the time I received a Tribune, and 1/3 the time I received the Herald. It seems to me that they just made up a bill and sent it to me hoping I would pay instead of trying to fight. read more

Wow, Dave W at the Daily Herald went above and beyond for my 89 year old mother and I. Briefly, my mother loves her Sunday Daily Herald, she reads every article and every ad as well as the TV guide and I forgot to bring her her newspaper on Christmas day so I left a message at the Herald on the 26th asking if I can possibly get a copy and Dave W called back the next morning and said he would be happy to mail me a copy. I offered to pick it up, he agreed and had it ready for me in a big envelope with my name on it. My mom was thrilled to get her beloved Sunday Herald and we are most grateful for the kindness that we received from the executive office at The Daily Herald. Thank You! read more

Yes, I am a victim and my own fault for not checking here first. We all want to help Little City. The neighborhood is buying these subscriptions as organization volunteers go door to door. I have done this twice. I have been burned twice. I tried to tell my roommate not to. He will find out the hard way. I too, tried desperately to find a way to cancel or send an email from something on their website. Nothing. I cannot call during the very few hours they are open to taking calls, and I cannot wait. I work and only get 10 minutes, so I wrote a letter which they didn't open for hmm maybe two months? I kept getting bills and finally someone called and apologized for how busy they were and they didn't have time to respond to letters. What a racket, I am thinking. She said my balance has been removed. Again, apologies. A few days after her call, I get a collection notice. I am thinking because they had time to send collection notices before reading their mail, ok. I think I won't get another one. I got another collection notice, and I have to write to the collection agency to explain the situation, as I know the DH won't ready their mail. I am appalled they are using Little City organizations to rip people off like this. I will need to call Little City about this. Sad very sad. read more

I will start with the fact that I am a long time newspaper reader since I was a child in the 70's and continuing as an adult with the Chicago Tribune and finally the Daily Herald. We left the Tribune as it's incessant rise in price became to expensive for even just the Sunday paper. We found that the Daily Herald at the time was significantly cheaper AND we could get it 7 days a week. We always liked the news and coverage in the Daily Herald. That was never the problem. However, just like the Tribune the price immediately began creeping up every couple months. Eventually it got to the poi where it was so expensive we cur delivery to 2 days a week . The price continued to creep ever higher and called and cut delivery to Sunday only in order to cut costs. After just a handful of years we were paying for one day a week subscription more than we were paying for 7 days a week just a handful of years earlier, without any options to opt out of the Costly special issues and special magazines that we never wanted in the first place. Finally in late 2023 we started trying to cancel our subscription. Interesting how you can do EVERYTHING online but cancel your subscription. That led to a couple of weeks of phone calls attempting to get a hold of customer service. Because everyone has time to call customer service right? I finally through on July 14th, 2023 and canceled our subscription. Which was important because it was long before the next Subscription period and autopsy on the 26th. I was told we were canceled and our last Sund paper would be on August 6th. Then the Customer service individual asked if we'd stay with The Daily Herald if she could lower our price. Seriously? Right then y'all can suddenly lower my price? Only after I'm canceling? If I'm such a good and important customer, shouldn't the Daily Herald have been offering me lower prices when I contacted them to save money going from 7 days to 2, and 2 days to Sunday only? But wait, there's more. On July 26, our account was charged for autopay. When I called and actually got through the Customer service individual said that whoever canceled our subscription didn't cancel autopay. Seriously? What would autopay be attached to then unless the subscription was still active? But wait there's still more yet. Today Friday August 4th I received a Final Notice Bill from The Daily Herald in the amount that was reversed on the autopay. Is this some sort of game? The office is closed already, so I'm guessing that when I speak to someone they will tell me that when autopay was canceled the bill automatically generates. However, my subscription has already been canceled. This bill would be for the next subscription period moving forward. So obviously if the system is still generating a bill it means my subscription hasn't been canceled and I've been lied too. Or this is a really deceptive practice, especially if a Senior citizen gets this Final Notice pay Immediately in the mail. Many senior citizens will need simply pay the bill even though they've canceled as well. Either way, this is not how business should be done. I worked in the Newspaper business 30+ years ago signing people up and canceling subscriptions. It's not that difficult. And it shouldn't take this many phone calls to cancel my freaking subscription. If you want to lose customers and never have them return. This is how you do it. read more

Been a customer for over 30 years. Received my bill in December for the next year and Just couldn't bring myself to keep going since the paper has gone downhill like a rock. I called and cancelled. A month later get another bill and another after that. Finally sent an email and asked why? They said I never cancelled and wanted to know when and who I spoke with. I didn't think to take notes for a simple phone call and couldn't name anyone. A few days later they emailed and said they would only charge me half. For what I cancelled months ago?? Same day I received a letter from a collection agency!! But I cancelled months ago!! No stars should be an option for this place. I would not recommend this paper to anyone and I recommend to watch what they bill, all subscription prices are negotiable if you say you are cancelling if you want to play the game. I have been an on and off again subscriber. Every time I subscribe to the Tribune and the Daily Herald the distribution people can't seem to deliver the paper on consistent basis. I call and tell the CSR'S I didn't get my paper. They promise to get one out same day and it almost never shows up. In between my cancellations I wait a Few months hoping they changed the delivery person, but same problem, no paper. I thought maybe if I switch from the Daily Herald to the Chicago Tribune I could get a different delivery service. I found out it's the same distribution service. My latest subscription is for the Daily Herald and the Sunday Tribune. Some of the CSR'S have told me don't worry you have the digital copy. I like the real old fashioned paper copy. I have once again cancelled the Chicago Tribune and will probably cancel the Daily Herald once again. The Herald is a small step down in terms of what it offers compared to the Tribune. However, the Sun Times is such a joke nowadays that the Herald is a much better option. The Herald does a great job of covering the Northwest and Western suburbs. Reporters I've worked with from there through my job have usually been very professional and done a good job of getting the story right with one exception. Unfortunately, some young reporters believe the way to get ahead is to write hatchet stories, but this is not the case at the Herald. Overall I'd say the Daily Herald does a nice job of positioning itself as a suburban-focused newspaper, giving a small-town feel, but also managed to cover Chicago, the nation, and the world well enough to be very well-rounded. read more

Having had this paper for since moving to Arlington Heights in 1965, which is 58 years, it totally turned it's back on us. When Paddock Publications owned and ran the paper it was full of great reporting, editorials and in depth local news at a reasonable price. Since the employees took over in 2018 as owners the paper has deteriorated into a thin, biased and useless information source. Every year the price skyrockets to levels exceeding those of Comcast which, I for one think are outrageous. We paid $275.60 for a one year subscription from 12-05-2021 to 12-03-2022 and cancelled it in September of 2022 thinking we would get refunded the balance of the subscription. What we got instead was a letter from a collection agency stating that we owe a balance of $60.94. I immediately called the Herald's subscription number and sat on hold for 35 minutes then got disconnected. I tried again and had the same experience. I found an 800 number for the Herald online and tried that and actually reached a real person. I explained that there must be an error because my bills and cancelled checks say that I am due a refund. I was then told that I indeed did owe $60.94 because of the "Premium" issues I had received. She told me to look at the small print on the subscription invoice which states they can send 13 of these per at up $4.99 per issue. This practice is just WRONG. I paid for a years worth of their anemic paper and the 13 issues with any substance will cost me an additional $4.99 each. I was told I would have to pay the balance. This is extortion in my eyes and I believe it's time to end this newspaper if it has to resort to these kind of tactics to survive. As a long time Chicago Tribune subscriber that tried to save money on rates. I decided to take advantage of the Herald's introductory offer of a trial yearlong subscription. It took some time getting used to small time journalism with very little national/ international news of their own. Lacked in depth sports coverage around pro leagues...it's a big world out there, cover it. Lo and behold, not six months into the trial offer, I get a $34 bill for a month. Tried to get through there automated garbage, only to find out they close at noon. What kind of customer service works only half a day???? Called the following day, in the morning, was number 37 and waited 45 minutes to talk to a rep. I inquired about my bill, rep snapped back it was 26 weeks and I mistaking in length. Very rude, short- not the ideal service to keep customers. Told her to stop my subscription at the end of my new trial period. She said 3-3-18 was last day and hung up. Hmmmm....I wonder if I'll go back to Chicago Tribune on 3-4-18??? Hell Yes!!! Headed back to a real newspaper. read more

I would give the daily herald negative 100 stars for delivery! I have had delivery issues for over a year. My paper often does not get delivered while my neighbors get theirs. I have called numerous times and have be assured that this will stop. I even spoke with the CEO secretary. I'm not sure what else I can do to get my paper delivered on a regular basis. read more

The delivery of this paper is the worst!!!!! I subscribe for the Sunday paper only and it is thrown at the end of my driveway and cars stop and pick it up. These delivery people should be trained to put the paper at the garage door not on the street. I had an accident which followed many surgeries and because I could not bend I asked that it be delivered at my garage door so I could hold onto the door frame and use my grabber to pick it up -- good luck! Customer Service sucks -- especially if you do not get your paper on a Sunday, they will tell you someone will call you back tomorrow?????? The paper itself is fine. The delivery of said paper is not. I've had an issue w getting my paper delivered for almost a year. Dh switched to a delivery service and the delivery service is a joke. My paper is down the block, at the neighbors, in the street, on my car or not delivered at all. I watched him deliver this morning, goes about 30mph past my house and whips it out the window. DH does nothing because they can't control them. They will give you a credit and apology but ultimately it's out of their hands. When asked who this delivery service is, they won't tell you.
