This place does not have any real internet presence. In fact, I'm just now adding their listing to Yelp with this review. SMART Centre Market is definitely a hidden gem. It's well hidden from everyone, but it shouldn't be. This place is great! I just happened to come upon SMART Centre Market when visiting Wheeling. They have a gigantic dinosaur torso busting out of the front of their brick building. "What the heck is that?" I thought. And then: "That looks derivatively like the dinosaur that's busting out of the front of The Children's Museum of Indianapolis." Well, after talking to one of the owners of SMART, it turns out that the dinosaur at the front of the building is in fact based on the dinosaurs at The Children's Museum! How weird to be so far away from Indy and yet come across something so dear to my heart where I live? Anyway, SMART has all kinds of dinosaur treasures to look at, including displays of fossils. There are STEM toys to play with, books to read, and science-related things to purchase if the mood strikes you. The store used to be the site of a bank, so the restroom is inside a safe! You have to see it to believe it. SMART Centre Market might just have the most interesting restroom in all of Wheeling. I didn't get to visit the ice cream parlor inside SMART Centre Market, but I did peek inside, and there were several flavors of ice cream to choose from. There are little tables in the ice cream parlor, so you can sit and enjoy your ice cream before or after perusing the rest of SMART Centre. The owners are former science teachers. They have a real interest and passion in STEM topics and dinosaurs, which you can tell just by visiting. They also love interacting with children! My children were delighted by them, and my youngest asked me if we could visit again the next day. SMART Centre Market offers classes and camps for kids throughout the year -- just visit their social media to learn what they are and when they take place.

The "Grandpa Joe" in the name of this shop is in reference to the grandfather in the movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, or Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, if you're one of those fancy people who reads books. I popped into this store with my kids and let them each pick out a treat. Wouldn't you know: My sons must be grandpas at heart themselves, because they both wanted taffy. WTH?! We were surrounded by thousands of different types of candy, in all flavors, shapes, sizes and varieties, including chocolates, gummies and many more things. And yet, they both wanted a bag of taffy. The old-fashioned candy that people used to eat not because they wanted to, but because there was no other option. It made me laugh. The taffy display did look mighty enticing, though. There are maybe two dozen different kids of taffy pieces in all kinds of flavors, and you can pick out what you want and put them in a bag. They both picked out seven or eight different flavors, and they were all good except the pickle-flavored taffy. We all spit that shizz straight into the trash can. There's a literal wall full of bottled sodas here. Pretty much any kind of unique and/or regional soda you might be looking for is at Grandpa Joe's. One of my kids collects fun soda bottles, so we spent some time picking out a soda to take home. Grandpa Joe's is also an ice cream parlor. They serve Perry's Ice Cream, and you can get all kinds of ice cream concoctions here, including a Dubai chocolate sundae, based on the viral TikTok-famous Dubai chocolate bar. (Although, with the way trends move, I doubt Dubai chocolate bars are still viral when you read this.) They also have chocolates and fudge, which you can pick up by the piece or by the pound.

There was every PEZ and dispenser, every rubber chicken, homemade fudge, every gummy, Tootsie, sour bit, licorice, flavored slime, glittery goo, and Violet Beauregard. My favorite thing in the store were baby socks that said, "Don't f*k me up!" The person at the counter was fine, but if I'm going for a Willy Wonka vibe, I'm gonna need more than "bored teenager from Wheeling." Even the parking vulture outside gave me more local culture.

But…read morefor my wife's and I anniversary I wanted to play the junk box at 4:45 PM on March 10, 2026, to play Music Groups, Aerosmith, "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing", and Savage Garden, "I Knew I Loved You". So I approached the juke box, and the bar tender Whoever said, that this is a family-owned restaurant, and they don't play the juke box during the day, because it is a family restaurant, but they have the Game Room, playing crude country music that doesn't respect the family, and they say my music is going make trouble. Plus they can have restricted stuff from not playing, instead, I felt singled out as a guest there. Yes, you can have your double standard rules, because this is America, and the freedom to do whatever you feel like, but that does not mean I have to go there to be singled. I don't have to go back there. The first time was great in January, but on my wife and I anniversary of 26 years, I think I can find a place where I feel more welcomed. It is always the case of passing a great place down through the family, in order for it feel unwelcomed of the glory days. Yes, I know this place has been around since the 1990's, but it is a very unwelcoming place. You can act nice, while showing you didn't want us there. They said it was because Karaoke was at 7PM, while a minute song at 4:45PM. While they didn't even know what songs I was going to place. Again, I thought it would be an old-fashioned feel. Thus instead, I felt the Cold Ridged Religious Feel that was a double standard of Gambling Rooms and so forth. Yes, I went to seminary and everything else, but I am going to let everyone choose their own path. They have their ridged rules, but that does not mean I have to eat there, especially for anniversaries. It is not an anniversary or a place for specially occasions. Again, it doesn't bother me one bit, because I move on, but I am raised with certain values to tell what I believe. My wife felt the onion soup was too breaded and cheesy. They had a great Salad and Gluten Free Pizza. And the bathrooms are clean when I went in there, but I don't feel welcomed there. Like you're a stranger that should never return. I just wonder.
