Dessert heaven right on the Park Ridge/ Chicago City line! As other reviewers have commented, this place can turn into a packed madhouse once springs hints. The product is just like any other DQ location and the staff of young people is generally well coordinated and tuned for customer service. The "take a number" system is essential here because the line often runs out the door. In addition, the front area is rather small for the crowds that the place attracts. If oodles of screaming children with their sumo wrestler feisty northwest side Chicago über-Irish mothers and snarly fathers, packed together into a tiny volume, isn't your idea a great dessert experience, then you might want to either avoid the place altogether or visit off peak. Between the customers, the workers and the various pieces of equipment that would be used to make the desserts, it's always got a noise problem. Fortunately, this old timey location has restrooms and overall, the entire place is reasonably clean. The parking proper for this business is minimal and tight. I recommend parking on the street just west of North Canfield Avenue, north of West Devon Avenue. Even parking further up on Canfield Avenue can be helpful. This place has seating, but I don't recommend it, because it's tight and you may have to fight for it. Spring will be here soon enough. Enjoy that first trip to DQ! read more

We first found out about this Dairy Queen several years ago at Taste of Park Ridge, sampling a cup of ice cream. After that we visited the physical location of the store. It is absolutely immaculate with friendly service. Even during the pandemic, this Dairy Queen provides outdoor parking and outdoor seating. The lines move quickly with the best service. I'm new to town but can I just say how happy I am to have this DQ within walking distance and on the way to/from some great parks. First off, this place is adorable. Straight out of history. I always feel kind of weird reviewing a chain. Unless the employees can't follow the pre-written directions on a particular item, the food is pretty similar from place to place. But what sets a place like this Dairy Queen apart is the staff, the crowd and the legacy. That, and that fact that it's our Dairy Queen. If you live anywhere near this DQ, you've been here. And you've been here for a variety of reasons--the after-the-game reward for your 5-year-old son, who managed not to cry during an entire t-ball game; an "I-need-something-to-stop-this-heartburn" remedy for your pregnant wife; the annual kids-are-home-from-school-who-wants-Dairy-Queen post-dinner treat; the "please-daddy" trip when driving your daughters home from dance; and the 9:55 I-can-eat-this-in-the-car-and-no-one-will-know vice after a trip to the health club. It's usually packed and fairly chaotic. If you don't venture toward the counter to grab a number, you send one of your kids, then watch the digital red numbers count while the other members of your family press their faces against the window from the outside, making sure you still remember that 18 is after 17, and 39 is after 38. Even the ordering is sort of frenzied. There's no Seinfeldian Soup-Nazi system of giving an order, then moving out of the way, so you're usually wedged between customers, shouting your order to the 17-year-old DQ employee who moves from customer to customer while joking around with his or her co-workers. When your ice cream's ready, you put down your plastic cup of water, grab your bounty and head home, to a table inside or hopefully, to a chair or bench or curb along Devon or Canfield. Like most ice cream places, it's crowded, bright and noisy but it's always clean and efficient. It's a well-run machine, really, staffed by always-moving teens who don't look burdened by their part-time jobs and managed by adults who seem to operate in perpetual motion. I always feel a little better when I see the building unshuttered in the early spring and a little worse when the "See you next year" signs go up in the late fall. There is no real town square in Park Ridge or on the Northwest Side but you'd think otherwise driving past DQ on any night in the summer. I went here with my parents when I was a kid, my wife when we were dating and with my own children. It's still the neighborhood gathering spot for boys on training wheels, girls in soccer jerseys, dads in cargo shorts and moms in flip-flops, a little March-to-November respite from jobs and bills and skinned knees and homework. One of my very good friends who went to Graduate School with me lives in Park Ridge, IL. Every year I visit her several times during the Summer months. She lives walking distance to this DQ. They have a parking lot in the rear, which only has about 8 parking spaces, so most people park in front of the DQ or across the street at the bank parking lot (after 5 pm). My friend grabs her two young children, and I leash up my dog and off we go to the neighborhood DQ. Since I gave up sugar I don't get anything here any longer. However, BEFORE I gave up sugar I used to indulge in the Peanut Buster Parfait, which is layered with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, peanuts and the layers continue all the way to the top. It is close to 5 bucks! Once in a while I would get a strawberry sundae without the whipped cream but with extra nuts. Of course, the strawberries are not fresh (more like the frozen kind at your local supermarket -- only they are thawed out). Keep in mind that this isn't "real" ice cream since it is soft-serve. My friend informed me that they are only open during the Spring and Summer months. They are closed from late October until the end of March or so. You can get some good deals at the end of the season. For example, their ice cream cakes are buy one and get one half-off or buy one and get one free. However, this only happens one or two days before they close for the winter. My husband loves sweets. He really, really enjoys the DQ ice cream cone. It reminds him of the ice cream that he used to get at the small-town where he grew up known as the "Tasty Freeze." Whenever we visit my friend we usually stop here to get a vanilla and chocolate twist ice cream with dipped chocolate (the chocolate becomes a hard shell) that he enjoys so much. He also loves the Peanut Buster bar which is under $2! It's like eating a frozen Snicker's bar with the caramel, chocolate and peanuts. Service is effusive, but fast. Most of the kids working here are 16 and above. This place expanded a few years ago. This is a plus since it gets super crowded between 6:30 to 8 pm. On weekends, when all the kids are done with baseball they come here in their uniforms and the line can get ridiculously long. So, if you don't want to stand in a long line with a bunch of little crumb snatchers and "OMG, fur sur but TTYL" Teenagers go here after 8 pm. The line moves quickly and the joint is always well-staffed. There are several red wood benches in front where parents, strollers and dogs hang out. They accept debit cards (for many years they were only "cash" only), but they finally came into the right century! read more

I love a good Oreo Blizzard or the French Silk one and even the Strawberry CheeseQuake and don't forget about the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup one. On a warm summer night this place has a line out the door and every bench outside occupied by couples, teens, baseball teams or scout troops. You'll see the bikes and skateboards parked outside. Located on the corner that divides Chicago's Edison Park neighborhood from Park Ridge, it draws in all the locals for some ice cream. It is open seasonally, from about March till October. The DQ expanded to hold a larger eat-in area now. However, it is most appealing to sit outside under the stars and enjoy a chocolate-dipped vanilla cone or one of the many DQ creations. The reason I gave this specific dairy Queen 5 stars is because it's a Edison park/park ridge staple. Has been for over 20 years. Only open in the summer, with long lines of kids waiting for their favorite treat. It's an experience. Sitting outside on the benches with your grandparents and your neighbors dog licking up what has melted on the ground. Cmon how could you not like this joint. Everyone from the neighborhood walks here at night and stories are told. It's been crazy busy for 20 years and will be for the next 20. Kudos guys, kudos. read more

This place is only open around 6 months of the year. It is amazing, each time I go here it is always packed. Most of the time the line is even out the door! It is located in a convenient location between Edison Park and Park Ridge. It is affordable and the mostly high school staff are very professional.
