The Cluny's a great venue…read more But, as there so often is, there's a but... The Cluny's a great venue but on this occasion the sound wasn't great. A worrying amount of feedback throughout Rob Heron and the Teapad Orchestra's album launch made for numerous mildly annoyed ears and some serious death glares from the band in the general direction of the sound man. Having said that, there might have been a problem with the equipment or instruments or cables, and when the sound was good, it did stay that way for a while. I once watched my sound engineer friend set up a ten piece ska band in the basement of a tapas restaurant. Just watching this made for a terribly stressful experience. At the end of the night, he was one giant bead of sweat. Rob Heron's band were on the larger side that night, with additional brass players. So I get that sometimes things might not go to plan. Regardless, it really didn't make the night any less enjoyable and we all agreed that we'd come back to the Cluny in a heartbeat and even love to play as a band. It's a great sized venue with a genuinely homegrown feel to it. From the posters strewn across the wall, it's clear that the Cluny is proud of its local music scene. With a kick-ass kitchen next door and what looked like a knock-'em-dead selection of beer, the Cluny is quite the place for music in Newcastle. Oh, and the floor bounces, YEAH.

It used to be populated by skinny heavy metal boys, and girls in lingerie, leather, PVC and spandex (that was me), but now it just feels a bit grubby. I have always been a bit of a rocker at heart, but more recently I became bored of the choices of beer, the EXCESSIVLY loud music which made my ears ring (although talking in sign language with my funny friend Mandy made it good), and the always broken toilets. There can be some good bands on, and some sad old acts too. I saw Pete Way's band Waysted there a couple of years back. My, how he has sunk low since the early days. The band played without an entrance fee, when once they played at Donington! The DJ is Big Gordon who used to do the Mayfair many years ago. If you like dark dungeons and overly loud rock music, then this might be the place for you. Access is down alot of stairs so beware, and it's desperately in need of a cheer up. There was a quiz every Sunday which always was amusing. Trying to get the compere (Glammy Simon) to read out very offensive team names, and watching kids with a zillion piercings and tattoos discussing the periodic table and history of European Royalty (they all were very brainy and took the whole thing very seriously), kept me going every week for a good couple of years! It mainly only refuses to conform in the sense it hasn't became a 'fun pub' like the atypical Sunderland bar. For all it was revamped a little several years ago, where it got one of the worst paint jobs I've ever seen, which almost ruined its interior glory, and subsequently took away some of its traditionalness(?). These days: it is dirty, on certain nights you wait ages to get served and when you do - it's expensive. Nonetheless, The Borough is still about the closest you're going to get to a traditional pub in Sunderland city-centre, and for all of its flaws, it is one of the very few pubs in Sunderland these days, that possesses any sort of character or soul. Which is why it's comfortably in my top two favourite pubs It's kind of like seeing a girl who might be cool or weird - you just can't decide. You know you can go meet hotter girls who adhere to more 'conventional' standards, but you'll always come back for fucking seconds. Or maybes that's just me. Five stars.

The jukebox is good and has a great selection of tunes, some of which you don't find in most places. Drink prices are pretty average, and they do something called a 'borough bomb' for around three fifty. Flaming absinthe and aftershock in red bull. If you order a few at once they'll do a fancy trick where they knock them all in. The bar went on fire when they did it for us.

The pub itself is fairly small if you exclude the outdoor area. The decor is attractive, if slightly worn in places, and the only thing about it that I really didn't like was the two massive widescreen TVs positioned in the dining area. The sound was just audible enough to be annoying and football matches were screened for the first hour or so that we were there followed by some BBC drama. I though these were unnecessary in the dining area and significantly detracted from the overall atmosphere. Later in the evening, the TV sound was drowned out by some disco music which again wasn't what I would have chosen for a dining area at all. We came on on a specials day (Mondays and Thursdays currently have 2 starters and 2 pizzas/pastas for £12) and found the bar and restaurant to be fairly crowded at 19:15 but by 21:00 when we left it had quietened right down. The a la carte menu was a shortish list of fairly basic pub fare aside from the steaks (of this more below), and we decided to go with the £12 special. We chose the dough balls and potato skins for our starters. The skins were greasy but tasty, and came with chilli and sour cream sauces, clearly from a bottle but which went well with them. The dense but fresh home-made dough balls were let down by their garlic butter which was basically a large chunk of butter in a little paper cup covered with a spoonful of garlic paste. We enjoyed our pizzas (which arrived rather late but we had an apology for that). The cheese on them was decent and the bases were very tasty, and although they weren't huge, we found them the perfect size after the starters. (Cautionary note: we do not have large appetites.) The pub also offer an unusual steak experience that is a little at odds with the rest of their very basic pub menu, and these are Steakstones. If you go for one of these expensive numbers, you get your choice of fillet or sirloin delivered to your table on a sizzling hot stone tablet so that you can finish cooking it as much or as little as you like. (We saw one at the next table.) Personally, as a rather particular steak-eater, I'd much rather have a chef cook my expensive steak than do it myself, and with the rest of the place being so cheap and cheerful, I was reluctant to commit £16 to discover how good or bad their choice of meat (and my cooking skills) could be. Overall, good value for a cheap meal out if you go on a specials night and probably about average the rest of the time. Unless you choose the steak!

It's in the centre of town, not far from the Big Market and opposite a 24 Hour Mcdonalds if you have the munchies when you get out. It's long, thin and cramped, but for that reason it's not allowed to pack several hundred people in so there wouldn't be a stampede in an emergency. It's an original, and that's the appeal. Having said that, it's been fitted with a safety feature to ensure a speedy exit for all concerned parties. It's called a door - there's one at the front, and one at the back, too. The Crown Posada is a perfect little pub, and there's too few of them left. Stained glass windows, a snug, ornate ceiling, real ale, and the fading gramophone entertaining those nearby. It's perfect.
