I regularly visit the audiology department for hearing aid repairs and batteries and the staff are always so friendly and provide a quick and thorough service, J. JaKobs is wonderful. The X-ray and ultrasound department however I feel the staff could be a bit friendlier and more helpful. I visited recently and my impression of the consultant was that she wanted you in, don't ask questions and get out, so I definitely thought she needed to work on her bedside manner. The cafe was a bit dire too, not much on offer, nothing that looked extremely appetising and hot drinks came in polystyrene cups which in this day and age is extremely basic. The staff (a man and a woman) although good at their jobs, friendly, polite and hardworking, it seemed they were both trying to compete to see who could do the most jobs, who could do them better, who was in charge. So although Lauriston Buildings offer a great service and most staff members are polite and friendly, the building itself and the cafe needs updated and modernised.

The Richard Verney Health Centre in Bristo Square is the health centre for the University of Edinburgh, and is situated directly on the university campus, just off Bristo Square. It provides the service of doctors and nurses to students and residents alike. There are a couple of great things about this place. The obvious one of these is the location. Besides that, the first great thing is their open access surgery. This runs from Monday to Friday, every morning between 9 and 10am. During this time, you can turn up without an appointment and see a doctor. This is great if something comes up, or you need some quick advice. Be warned - it does get very busy, especially during term time, so arrive as close to 9am as possible if you want a quick appointment. In the other clinics and surgeries that operate during the day at the centre, the appointments tend to run pretty close to time. Some surgeries can run horribly late, but I don't think that I have ever been in more than 15 minutes after the scheduled appointment time. The other great thing about this place is that there is a pharmacy in the same building, so no need for a long walk to get prescriptions or other pharmacy supplies. As a student, I feel that registering with a health centre is a must, and if you're a student at the University of Edinburgh, then this facility is a no-brainer.

And, if your eyes are healthy, no matter how much I rave about this place, I'm not sure you'll really be inclined to pay it a visit. Anyway, here I am reviewing it regardless. My eyes are a bit dodgy, so I have to come here about twice a year, and while it's very fashionable to complain about the NHS, I've actually always been pretty impressed, as they're efficient and friendly here, I have a nice doctor, and, because it's a specialist hospital, there isn't quite the same overpowering atmosphere of dying and depression here that is in other medical institutions. My only complaint concerns the name, which I think implies some sort of gracious, royally-endowed pagoda-like building, perhaps with some peacocks outside, or at the very least some bunting. The Eye Pavillion is nothing like this at all. It's an ugly structure made out of concrete. Perhaps the people who built it assumed that everyone who came here would be too blind to notice.

I'm not too sure how you can review a medical practice so will attempt to focus and highlight the main things one looks for when visiting a doctor. So here we go... 1. Ease of making an appointment - pretty good. On average there are between 4-7 doctors available each day and although we now see one if them as the family doctor, should we not be able to get a timely enough appointment, We've always managed to see one of the others the very next day. 2. Waiting time once there - very good. Only ever waited a max. of 10 mins after the allotted appointment time. 3. The doctors themselves - this is an obvious statement, but each doctor to their own! They all appear caring, knowledgeable and attentive....and most importantly, capable! In all our experiences in attending this centre, they have been positive and timely. Not that We are keen to make a habit of lobbing here, but when we do I know we'll be looked after.

The West End Medical Practice is an NHS practice located on Chester Street in the heart of…read moreEdinburgh's West End. The practice has several doctors and as I am not too fussy so long as a doctor listens to me, I have seen all the doctors who work here and have been impressed with all of them. The practice also has two nurses on duty who are very friendly and professional. I recently had cause to use the nurse on a regular basis to have dressings changed following an accident and they made a painful and distressing experience one that was actually bearable. The practice also has a Diabetes Clinic which operates every week and ensures those who have diabetes are seen regularly without having to go to hospital. My only complaint about the practice is sometimes it can be nigh on impossible to get through to them on the phone. This isn't too much of a problem for me as I live close by and can go to reception to make an appointment but if you need a doctor's appointment in a hurry and cannot do this it can be quite frustrating. Also, the surgeries are held in the basement of the building, which means people with mobility problems struggle to get to see a doctor. Some surgeries are held on the ground level but there are still stairs at the front entrance. Overall however this is a good practice and I have been very impressed with the service the staff provide.

And this practice...practices...centre... proves this. Thankfully, if you make it past the two different websites for two different practices that have the same desk and waiting room, you've pretty much conquered the battle. Congratulate yourself. Unfortunately, for this little expat - that battle was a big one to begin with. As a Canadian, I high five the NHS. Like our health care back home, it's a huge relief to know that the majority of my ailments are covered. Plus... you have dental. So you've beat Canada. Good job UK. But the method of registering with a GP as an expat can be highly confusing. There are armfuls of paperwork to bring, you walk into a building that looks nothing like the three seat waiting room of your GP's practice back home and there's different types of appointments to be had... I had the option to book for three weeks away... or an urgent same day appointment and i'm still not sure what the difference is. What I will say for both major practices here is that they are super patient with a confused little expat, especially since they are obviously understaffed at the desk and up to their eyeballs. Both ladies who helped me out on the phone and the the nurse who helped me in person, were efficient but kind in showing me the ropes. There were a lot of ropes. But once I was talked through them, things went pretty smoothly and I was able to navigate registration and then down the line, an appointment. Go team expat! If you live in Stockbridge, you're likely registered here. If you aren't and you need a practice with a quick turnaround on appointments (but only if you ask for the right one...), it's a good option to take a look at. At my first visit (solely for the purpose of registering) I found the whole process confusing. I…read moresay this because the information provided to me in person and the information provided online are vastly different. So much so that I had to leave, gather more paperwork from my bank (but apparently bank statements aren't accepted?) then return. So at first visit: a frustrating but necessary use of time. Second visit: health check with the nurse. A complete waste of time. I missed an hour of work for my height and weight to be taken. Could this 5 minute visit just be added onto a GP visit? Third visit: actual GP visit. I don't understand why I am allocated a GP if anyone is assigned to see me. Also, soo unimpressed. Being quite unwell, I explained my symptoms and after the generic temperature-blood pressure- light in throat check, I was sent on my way. I was in for all of 5 minutes and felt unheard and unwelcome during the visit, like I needed to move on because the GP was just oh so busy that he couldn't spare the time. Such a disappointment.

They told me interesting facts about diseases (eek!) and the likelihood of coming in contact with them in Peru. The doctor, the one time I went, was cold and unfriendly. She rudely told me when I said I had some questions that we had five minutes together so I'd better hurry. Then she said no they didn't do that to simple things like checking my moles and freckles and a breast exam. I wasted my time but at least she got paid. I have never been back here and luckily I moved and can try a different GP.

I want to be able to get an appointment when I need one and they accommodate this brilliantly. I can speak to a doctor if I need to, they arranged for a call back and the doctor called at the time they agreed. I want any prescriptions to go automatically from the surgery to my local chemist for collection, they do this and it can be arranged on automatic re-order every 3 months which is very handy. You want a pleasant building and this does the job well and is modern, bright airy and has a car park at the back. Yes the phone line can be a bit manic at 8am when it opens for emergency appointments, but any other doctors I have been too is the same. They do a decent job.

My daughter went in for asthma attack to get a breathing treatment. The Dr didn't know what to do with her asthma as they don't have asthma treatment. They did check her for all of the airborne viruses which is good. He did give her new inhaler since her inhaler isn't helping her. They checked her breathing and she failed it twice so it's kinda of scary how they let her go with her lungs aren't working that good cuz of the asthma. he gave her steroid pills for four days. They don't let anyone go back with the patient except if you are bleeding I guess. As my daughter told me there was a guy bleeding from his knees , left arm and his head. She said they only covered his legs with a sheet but his head was still bleeding all over his face. But his family were in the back with him. The staff are super nice honestly so I have no issues with them. It's the free medical system that isn't good! Overall yes go there if you need to see a dr night or weekend. No don't go there if it's during the days of the weekdays. Like there is a lot of private Dr's that you can see if you want to get checked for normal things.
