Love that it's open late night (until midnight) and love the vibe of this space... you walk in and it's pretty decent sized - there are booths surrounding this restaurant; it's nice to have a private space to yourselves. Movie posters are splattered on the walls decorated with vinyl records and the like. Overall, such a cute hole in the wall late night spot. For the record, I eat mostly pescatarian/vegetarian diet. So their menu isn't really catered to that so much minus a couple things here and there, but I managed to order the tofu bibimbap (and a couple bottles of soju). My friend ordered french fries and spicy korean fried chicken. The server that took our order was so kind, thank you for being attentive :) Wasn't able to catch their name, but we really appreciated the service. What was once a late-night staple has unfortunately become a fading memory. The issue with Porno bar is its inconsistency. Every time I visited over the years, there seems to be an entirely new rotation of staff, yet they all share the same customer service issues. The workers look like they don't want to be there (I get it, it's work), and that disinterest shows a bit more than it should, draining the energy from the room. The food mirrors this inconsistency. We frequently stick to what we consider safe items like the porno fries, spicy fried chicken, and spicy rice cake. However, during our last visit, we decided to try the seafood pancake, the Bulgogi burger, and our usual corn cheese. Somehow, all three dishes were a disappointment. The seafood pancake was dense and doughy, while the Bulgogi burger was a bit of a soggy mess. Even the corn cheese, the coveted item that used to keep us coming back, missed the mark. It was pooling oil that left a greasy mouthfeel. While the ambiance remains nice, the kitchen simply underperforms on too many of its dishes now. With all of the new Korean restaurants and pochas popping up in the area, there are far better options available. It was one of the few places open late, so my friends and I decided to give it a try--and I'm really glad we did. It ended up being the perfect spot to satisfy our Korean food cravings. I ordered the mussel soup, and it was exactly what I was hoping for. The broth had a subtle, clean flavor that wasn't too heavy, making it incredibly comforting. This is our 2nd time here and the service is just as wonderful as the 1st time. It's a great spot to go to after attending a concert in Oakland since they're opened until 2AM. Love the ambience here, we sat in the booths. Walls scribbled and plastered with old posters haha. The banchan dishes they served were Mac salad, kimchi, fish cake, and seasoned cucumbers. I think it varies with what they have prepared, it was a little different than what they offered the first time we visited but all were wonderful starters. Also note their corn cheese was very sweet so just be wary but we still enjoyed it. It did take some time for the food to come out but we did order a lot and everything still came out so delicious! I don't ever leave reviews for restaurants but felt like this needed to be said since the service I experienced here was so bad. I came as a party of two and ordered my food around 10:30. A half an hour later the waitress asked us what we ordered and proceeded to flip through her notes to realize she hadn't put down what we asked for. Instead she decided to place our order again, without an apology of any sort, having us wait an extra 25 minutes for the food once again. We only ordered two dishes alongside some soju. This is the perfect place to have Korean food and drink. The restaurant gives off a very chill vibe with the dim lights and booth style tables. You can get really good soju cocktails here. This is usually why we eat here. There is a ton of good shareable foods to go with drinking. The servers have been attentive. I've been here a few times and will continue to come back. I've also always found parking nearby which is nice. If you want to keep drinking after dinner you can always leave your car and walk a few blocks down. Nice quiet little spot with a private booth to have a conversation and actually be able to hear what is being said which is rare for Korean bbq ! Lol the server was very quick and got the food relatively fast and it was delicious. We had Bulgogi, kimchi fried rice, green onion, pancake with pineapple and cheese and porno fries. My only complaint was the water was a little funky and I'm a big water drinker so not gonna lie....I was judging a little bit. When you enter it's a dark, wooden cellar w/ K-Pop posters and graffiti on the wall. Don't let the decor fool you. This place has amazing Korean food from soups, stews, grilled meats and fried chicken. If you're w/ friends, make sure to also order some soju or even a Hite beer to complement your meal. If you like a little kick to your food, would highly recommend the spicy race cakes with ramen noodles. The soup isn't too spicy and is filled w/ a combination of delicious rice cakes, vegetables, tofu and ramen. The perfect dish especially for a cold or rainy day. You can never go wrong w/ the standard bulgogi or grilled spicy pork. The dish is served w/ rice and works as an individual entree or to share amongst friends. Candidly this place would be 5 stars if the service was a little better. Although the servers are polite, you often have to track or wave them down. It's almost as if they sometimes get lost in their own world and the K-Pop music blasting on the speakers. Dining at Dan Sung Sa in approximately 2018 with some of my friends/classmates was a unique experience in terms of ambiance/atmosphere, food, and discussion. We were a cohort who entered Ph.D. programs in the same department in the same year. We opted to come here for food to do a semi-routine check in with how we were all doing. The line was not too long for us when we arrived and we were seated in our own house-like booth. While there were many other diners, the interior decor helped provide a physical impediment to sound from other groups carrying into our booth. While we did strain at times to hear each other, we did hear that one of us, Nate, was getting married and only their families were invited (small ceremony). It was also the occasion where we were informed another one of us, Luke, was leaving with a Masters degree and going to pursue goat farming. Not sure how long we wanted to catch up, we decided to pick a dish per person (approximately). The food came out in a few different batches. We were hungry when round one arrived and ended up liking the staggered delivery, our immediate hunger was alleviated with the first round and we filled up with subsequent round(s) of dishes. What's all this talk about a Porno Bar? This Korean spot has been here for years, but Jamie W and I didn't know about it until a bartender at the White Horse Inn suggested the Porno Palace as THE place to get big portions of good Korean food. We were hesitant our patronage would mean bodaciously endowed strippers flinging banchan at us, but no such titillation did occur. However, there was a sign for the Happy Hour at the Porno Bar, Mon-Thu 5-7PM. It turned out the references to porno relate to provocative long-ago movie posters that have since been removed from the walls. What's left is a dark, clubby kind of a vibe with a fully loaded bar and a series of wooden booths where we gorged in private. My first time at Dang Sung Sa was a fever dream. I was exhausted and starving. I am trying to remember if I liked the food, the only thing I took away was the decorations, and that it reminded me of spots I went to in Seoul. When my friend reached out to grab dinner and wanted Korean, we decided on this since it was a new spot for her. We left disappointed and found it lacking. We came on a weekday evening for an early dinner. The restaurant is dark but spacious with semi-closed-off booth seating. Late in the evening, it's a popular spot for friends and groups, but not a family-friendly place because, on the walls of the restaurant, you'll find interesting and hilarious photos. We both agreed service was extremely slow. We were at the restaurant for 2 hours and never once were checked in on. The food came out staggered too. With it being colder out, soup sounded ideal. I ordered the Fish Cake Soup while my friend had the Stone Bowl Bimbimbap with Korean Short Ribs. The portion of my soup was the only pro. The broth was saltier, the fish cake was similar to the frozen ones, and all the other toppings and proteins (fish balls, imitation crab) were lacking in flavor and taste. Even the side dishes, banchan, could have been better. My friend wasn't too excited to only see three small pieces of meat and a hefty amount of rice for her dish. I would steer clear of these items. Oakland has a lot of options for Korean food. I found the quality and quantity at Dang Sung Sa to be less than average compared to others. Dan Sung Sa is located along a busy street. Parking may be a bit difficult, as it is limited street parking. I had to park at least a couple of blocks away (metered parking). Service was for the most part good - we were seated almost immediately after arriving, but it took a bit time to order and receive our food. My friend and I ordered their Grilled Whole Squid and Spicy Rice Cakes (With Everything and added cheese) to share. This was a lot of food for just 2 people. The squid was good, but I wished it did not have this aftertaste to it. It can be a bit loud so we opted to sit next to each other instead of across. We got the gizzard and spicy chicken wings. I'm a big fan of Korean gizzard! This came stir-fried with jalapeños and garlic. The portion is like tapas; it's not a whole meal. It paired nicely with our green grape soju shots. Biased but "Pornos" is the best Korean restaurant in the East Bay! This is theeee spot especially if you go with a larger group and do family style. I've gone with 12~ friends and have ordered so many entrees and kept it at 25/30$ each person - which is great because you get to try many menu items. If you're going with a date or a couple people, they do have great combos as well. Their food is extremely flavorful and satisfying, my personal favorites are the tteok-bokki, cheese corn, kimchi tofu soup and seafood pancake. The vibe inside feels like a dim lit late night adult spot (prob not the best for kids since it's a bar!) Prices and pitchers of beer and soju are great too! As for service, there's a crowd on weekends so they're overloaded and sometimes can't quite check on you as quickly as they can but they try their best.
