I was skeptical but my friend has a pretty good eye for picking quality restaurants so I trusted…read morehis gut. Plus, I really love mango sticky rice and hoped that they'd have it on the menu. Sadly, they did not but I understood the explanation. We ordered corn fritters, vegetable tempura, hand fried spring rolls, green curry with tofu, pad Thai, and a Tiger beer. It was good. I'm glad it was so good because it is not fast. Which means someone is actually cooking the food. Which we need to appreciate more. So go there when you're with someone whose company you enjoy and you aren't in a hurry. Sit. Have a beer or two and wait. It's coming and it'll be good. It's also good because it isn't TOO anything. My friend wanted more seasoning and asked if it would be rude to ask for salt or something. I decided that it would. This is a family spot. "You go tell him his wife's food isn't to your liking", I joked while savoring my dish. This man wanted to ask for salt or (gasp) soy sauce(!) and he had eaten the decorative vegetables on the plate. It was good solid Thai food. The server was kind and celebrated my sloppy attempts at speaking Thai. The spot is not what you'd expect, it's homey, the ceiling and walls covered in standard cultural decor but it gave speakeasy. Like a place the mob would frequent. Quiet, comfortable, private, and low traffic. This should he a neighborhood favorite.

I just wanted to add my vote to this great Thai restaurant. The food is very good, and the prices…read moreare very reasonable for London. It does have a cozy and friendly atmosphere. I just wanted to clarify a few points that were raised above but not fully discussed: 1) This restaurant does NOT serve any alcohol at all. Consequently, they do allow you to bring your own wine (which is great for saving money). So be sure to stop into one of the local shops on your way there and buy a bottle of wine. 2) Space is VERY limited. The restaurant is basically the dining room of an old house that's been converted into a restaurant. So it can get very crowded. Be sure to call first and make a reservation. I've seen people waiting outside this place for 30-40 minutes to get a table otherwise, and the first thing the waiter asks to in-coming customers is "Do you have a reservation?" And it can get crowded on week-days as well as weekends.

It can be hard to get a table but it's worth the wait. Take out is also a great option as the restaurant works pretty quickly, you just have to make sure you have cash as the restaurant is not registered on just eat or hungry house. The dishes are great value for money. My all time favourites are the massaman and yellow curry with coconut rice. Pad thai and pad see eew are amongst the best I've had in London. A diverse menu that would please a big group. They also have a selection of delectable starters and tasty salads that will make sure you don't leave hungry. They also allow bring your own so it's a great cheap and cheerful night out catching up wih friends.

Oh I am so disappointed to have to write this update. After the last time we went, we thought we'd…read moretry it again. We walked in early on a Friday evening (7.15pm) and got a table (with the proviso that we could only have it for 2 hours, which was fine). We sat down and were immediately asked what we wanted - we actually needed a few minutes to settle and think, but we ordered diet coke to buy ourselves some time. We ordered some food and waited - it took quite a long time, so we ordered some prawn crackers. They arrived instantly, I mean the waitress turned round, grabbed them and put them back on our table. We were chatting away, so I dunked one in the sauce and ate it without really paying attention. The sauce tasted really odd, so I asked what it was. "Chicken and peanut" was the answer. Seeing as we had ordered vegetarian dishes, I thought that was quite a risk - also no warning about the peanut sauce? Since thai prawn crackers usually come with chilli sauce, I was slightly bemused - I assume it was someone else's mistaken order since it was ready instantly and cold. Anyway, we moved on to our main course. My sister ate some of her steamed rice and pulled a long black hair out of her mouth. It was not ours... then lifted a spoonful of the vegetarian red curry up to see another hair dangling from the spoonful. I called the manager over and explained that I would pay for the diet coke and the prawn crackers, but that we were leaving now and not paying for the main course. She agreed that our experience was unacceptable and didn't charge us for anything. We left and went next door to Joanna's, which was absolutely wonderful. We will never be going back there.

This is a beautiful restaurant…read more Bright, airy, clean and big. However, it suffers from poor service and average food. 6pm on a Saturday and the restaurant is deserted. The Mrs and I go in and we have to wait 10 mins at the door for the host to find a floor manager, to find another floor manager to see if we can have a table. We then get told we can have a table *ohthankyouverymuch* provided we vacate it in 2 hours and 45 mins. I doubt I've ever spent 3 hours in a restaurant just for a main. After eventually being seated, we can see a flurry of staff milling around. By the time we were approached we knew what we wanted, but they just took our drink orders. A small glass or red and an ice tea for the missus. After another tables drinks being served before ours, I get my red wine and they take our order. It takes 20 more mins and the one starter we ordered to come out before the Mrs gets her ice tea. - Apparently it was lovely. We share the spicy fish cakes. They were nice. Very lemony and a bit chewy but overall a OK from us. Before we get our mains there's a lot of faffing with tea lights and plate warmers and more cutlery. We play it safe and order a Tofu Pad Thai and Prawn Red Curry and Jasmine rice. The food came out and we were utterly underwhelmed. Bland. The portion sizes were perfect, but the food was just so uninspiring. I've paid half the price for tastier food. My tofu was so small and overcooked. The Mrs Rice like boil in a bag. This is the sort of restaurant where they have elaborate cutlery, place your napkin on your lap and serve everything in an elaborate manner. But it lacks substance and good service. By the time we left, the restaurant was not much busier. I can see why they warned us about the 2 hours 45 mins we had to vacate the table by because the entire process was unnecessarily slow. With so many staff we wonder why things took so long and was so lacklustre. I was glad service charge was not included on the bill, because in all honestly I wouldn't have paid it. It's really disappointing because the Tamnag Thai really gives off the air of fine Thai dining. The price did not reflect the quality of the food or ingredients and I doubt I'll be rushing back there when there are lots of alternatives in the area - albeit not as pretty.

Eventually I ventured in and how pleased am I that I did? VERY! Thai Girder isn't a large restaurant - I doubt that more than 40 people could be comfortably seated inside - providing an intimate and cosy atmosphere. With sombre, modern décor and slightly dimmed lighting a relaxed mood is achieved and even with the occasional take-away customer breezing through there maintains a smooth, flowing consistency from the waiting staff who, though mostly young (I'm guessing), were polite, friendly and most importantly assuringly competent and in control. The menu is extensive enough to meet a large variety of tastes and preferences and should you wish to change a dish around a little (swapping a meat for tofu as an example) then this is easily possible as we discovered. The prices aren't too pricey either and the meals are plentiful in themselves. I was particularly pleased with the amount of pork in my main, some place can be a little stingy and fill the dish out with varying vegetables. So, a great little place to discover and if the level of quality remains consistent for my next few visits (because I will be returning here) then I'll have no qualms at all about bumping Thai Girder up to a 5 star establishment. FYSR, Ian
