I found KAP therapy, conceptually, incredibly effective-if you give yourself to it. It brought up things that I didn't even realize I was upset about from childhood. Made connections for me that only 10 years of talk therapy could do in a single session. The medicine itself is incredibly intuitive, yet you still feel like you have a bit of direction in terms of what part of your psyche you want to deep dive. Michael is great at always arriving to our sessions with a plan or exercise in order to get us talking should my husband and I be dead silent which has happened. He makes sure each of us is heard and understood. The one thing I really like about Michael is no one can give specifics in a session like she said he said. Like he did this last week, or she did that last month etc...This is important or the whole session would be cluttered with accusations when instead we work on how to be a better team and get useful skills. Michael is also awesome at reeling it in when we do go down that accusation path and the session is about to go sideways. We always end with a plan of action which I like. I had a good first year with Marenka before things went harmfully haywire. One year into our…read moretherapeutic relationship, I experienced an agonizing breakup that intensified my emotional reactivity. During this and another crisis, Marenka responded to me in ways that were unprofessional and immensely damaging to my wellbeing. In response to my hyper-verbal grieving, Marenka attempted to slow me down by "coming in hot" and "getting experimental" (her words). She dismissed my repeated requests to revisit insights I'd begun processing in a previous session, telling me she didn't believe I really wanted to discuss it due to my ADHD-fueled processing style (jumping from one concern to the next). Though I assured her I was serious about it (this being the third time I'd brought it up), she continued to refuse. When I responded angrily to this dismissal, she asked me if I had spoken to my ex in the same way. This sent me out of her office. We eventually recovered from this rupture, and Marenka encouraged me to continue providing feedback about my experience of our sessions and therapeutic relationship. A few months later, I was in a work-related quagmire that stirred up some nasty toxic stress for me. I was experiencing a sharp uptick in CPTSD symptoms and needed acute support. I asked for Marenka's help figuring out how to navigate triggering communications with my coworkers, and I shared that I'd begun experiencing suicidal ideations again. Marenka never asked questions about my ideations and said, while shrugging, that she wondered who could help me with the work comms. Marenka's harmful response to my ADHD overstimulation and difficulties regulating my attention and emotions became even more aggressive during this time. While I rapidly cycled through chaotic verbal processing about my work stress, Marenka became irritated and yelled at me: "what is so hard about slowing down?!" I felt as though my ADHD got in her way, which is a shitty way to feel when I go to therapy to, in part, figure out how to manage my ADHD symptoms. During another session around this time, I tried to share an insight with Marenka that I thought was important. She cut me off mid-illustration to let me know, exasperatedly, that I didn't need to rehash "the whole thing." Marenka became defensive and dismissive when I shared my concerns about these issues. Rather than respond to my feedback, she announced that we should terminate therapy altogether. When I asked her to respond to my feedback, she said she would only do so if I proved to her that I cared for her well-being. In addition to centering herself in her work as a therapist, Marenka seems unaware of the power imbalance between therapists and their patients/clients. She also does not take seriously the social contexts that condition mental illness and wellness. Throughout our sessions, she consistently disavowed the socio-political container in which relationships occur, insisting, time and time again, that my male partner's shirking of domestic labor was not a gendered issue. Finally, despite my requests (from jump) to work though racialized trauma that contributes to my chronic pain and emotional dysregulation, Marenka alleged, at the end of our time together, that she was unaware of this dimension of my experience and of my desire to center it in therapy. I would NOT recommend Marenka to BIPOC or ND folks.

If you are looking for a therapist who doesn't just talk about healing but actually helps your brain and body rewire itself, look no further. Working with Mey has been a transformative experience. She understands that's therapy is not magic. It is hard work. Some days I leave feeling lighter/clearer; other days I leave feeling as though I've spent three rounds at war with my past. The difference is that, over time, I realized I was no longer fighting alone and finally had someone in my corner who would help clear the illusions and understand the truth, and simultaneously, heal. My childhood was a collection of nightmares in a haunted house on "Kildare Lane." No Joke. How fortunate I was to find Mey, who offered to guide me through it all and help me unite with my inner child. Next, I've lived for years with my nervous system stuck in in survival mode - fight/flight/freeze. Mey's expertise in modalities like EMDR, LENS and Lifespan Integration has completely changed the game for me. Mey has a great balance of scientific knowledge, intuition, combined with an ability to provide real compassion to every session. I feel heard, supported, and most importantly, I feel safe expressing things I would otherwise keep secret as much of the trauma I experienced is rather inhumane and overwhelming. There's is no judgement or embarrassment attached to putting my suffering into words. Many therapists are highly good and capable of working within clinical frameworks. But it takes something more to become a true healer - it takes someone who understands that the wounds of childhood can linger across a lifetime, combined with a deep understanding that the human condition can sometimes be a catastrophe. Mey gets it. After one year, what has become very clear to me, is that there were many sessions I walked in convinced I had everything figured out, only to leave realizing I'd been believing an engineered story of false truths and confidence, not competence - for half a century. The changes over the past year have been profound. I think more clearly. I react with greater intention; my blood pressure has decreased along with my chronic neck pain. Who knew? In fact, I have explored the idea of inviting conflict and disagreement into my life just so I can appreciate how well I cope with it. If you do the work, show up honestly, expose yourself, and are willing to face the difficult places most people spend their lives avoiding, May will dive right into the shadow darkness and guide you to something irreplaceable - peace.
