Kim's a salsa-dancing maven, and since she moved to Santa Barbara was looking for a new place to…read moreshake it. From The Independent we learned of the SB Dance Center's $7 dance lesson and practice party afterward and decided to give it a shot. The Center is spacious with a nice-sized lobby for chit-chat, and two generous ballrooms with good fans and nice art. Class was surprisingly well-attended for a rainy Saturday night and we were treated to a Charleston/Lindy Hop lesson. I've been Lindy Hopping since '98 (damn I'm old!) but I appreciated the refresher. Our fellow dancers were from a variety of backgrounds and ages, and all were kind and friendly, exactly the wholesome type you encounter at a swing dance. The instructors did a nice job incorporating the basics for all the beginners and even tossed in a couple of more advanced moves for those of us long-time lindy hoppers. We stayed after for the practice dance, and although it was initially weird getting asked to dance (and asking guys to dance again!) it was super fun and I know Chun P. wouldn't mind. Every Saturday night the Center offers a different type of dance lesson, and I'm looking forward to dropping by for a dance and seeing my new friends on my next trip!

The dance center is a great location to take a class. The facility is clean and inviting.read more

Came here for a free watch party for the World Cup. Love the idea! It was very family friendly. The…read morescreen obviously is huge and so great to watch the game on. Full concessions and bar was open. We ate dinner around the corner at the Santa Barbara public house then walked over for the game. Such a unique experience to watch the game in a historical theater setting with other football fans

The stage curtains can no longer be fully retracted for a widescreen movie. Super Mario Galaxy, of all things, had about 3 feet on each side projected onto the curtains. Abandoning the beautiful entryway and its kiosk is unforgiveable. Instead you are to buy your tickets in the box office, which bears no resemblance to the rest of the building. It looks like a pop-up version of the office at your middle school. It's beautiful inside, and the unpleasant smell is faint enough you'll forget it once your popcorn and red licorice ick int. But be sure you sit in the front 10 to 20 rows if you want to actually feel you are watching a projected film on a big screen. My negativity is here to apply what small share of pressure I can contribute to what should be one of Santa Barbara's iconic landmarks. The theater is worth visiting anyway. On a certain level it is wonderful. But boy does it need a lot of work.
