I had a check engine light on after replacing my exhaust and doing some work on my 04 Tacoma. I had asked them to replace my exhaust prior since it was super rusty and rattling, but they told me to just get someone else to do it. After replacing it myself I asked them if they could diagnose the code associated with it and they said they wouldn't work on it since it wasn't oem and couldn't recommend any other mechanics to look it over. Seems like they just want to to basic assembly work that you would have done at a dealer, but as far as anything that requires an actual mechanic, they aren't interested. When I bought a Prius, I was referred to Dan's by my old trusted mechanics at Precision Honda. Two days ago, four different warning lights lit up on the dashboard and my heart sank. I took it to Dan's for the first time. Despite the bad news they had for me, they were very sympathetic and extremely knowledgeable about my car, which is hard to come by. They finished the job (new hybrid battery) in less than 24 hours and since I rented a car for the day, they knocked some money off too. The dealership would have charged me at least $1,500 more than Dan's did, despite using the same warranted Toyota battery. The car had been maintained by another shop in town so I continued taking it there for a few months but I quickly noticed they were ripping me off when they told me my brakes were only at 25% and needed to be replaced for 500 dollars. Dan's checked my brakes out and told me they were fine, as Prius brakes are built to last a long time. They also saved me $60 on my oil change. No joke. In short: employees at Dan's are honest, knowledgeable, understanding, and not condescending to young women. read more

So I stopped in Dan's toy shop because my Camry's driver side window/door lock module had fallen into my door and I only wanted it put back into place. The receptionist there said there would be a $120 diagnosis fee which is beyond ridiculous especially since it hadn't stopped working. Not only that, but the soonest they could get to it would be a week later. Makes sense considering I didn't see any shop techs anywhere. I ended up going to Priority Auto on grant and they said no problem! It took them about ten minutes to set it back into place and there was no charge. Take a lesson Dan. That's customer service! I'll be going back to Premier Auto for all my car care needs. read more

Dan's Toy Shop mechanics will make ridiculous, incorrect and unethical claims -- to make a big sale. I was shocked. I expected excellent service. I brought my vehicle in as part of an official, scheduled appointment for service. I received several recommendations for Dan's Toy Shop. I just moved back to Tucson, and I wanted to get established at a locally owned shop. I like to support local businesses, and I had every expectation that I would receive the best service in town. My immediate needs were a full inspection and oil change. I wanted to make sure that my 4Runner was in good condition before I got my Arizona emissions test. While talking to the front office receptionist, I did mention that I would like the mechanics to look at my catalytic converter oxygen sensors. Every couple of months, when I drove in dusty conditions, the check engine light would turn on, indicating a potential catalytic converter efficiency problem. I did plenty of research on the issue, and found that my specific problem on my specific model vehicle was a common concern. The oxygen sensors on my vehicle tend to be sensitive, especially around dust. This is a commonly-reported problem. Some (crook) mechanics jump to the conclusion that the catalytic converter is faulty, and insist on replacing it. Catalytic converters are extremely expensive. However, knowledgeable Toyota mechanics are aware that the sensors can be finicky on this particular model-year 4Runner, and that there isn't necessarily a problem with the catalytic converter -- It's better to rule out oxygen sensor problems first, and work on the problem incrementally. When I mentioned this issue, I was told by the receptionist with complete certainty, that I would need to replace the catalytic converter. This after not even seeing an engine error code or even inspecting the vehicle (which was still sitting in the parking lot.) I informed them of this issue and asked if they could look into a potential oxygen sensor problem, anyway. After I was unsatisfied with statements made by the receptionist, I was told by a mechanic that there is no way that there could be a problem with the oxygen sensor -- Again, saying that with certainty, without even seeing the vehicle. It's unethical to make a determination such as that without looking into it further. I was told that the oxygen sensors do not have issues and are not faulty. I was shocked that a mechanic (not to mention a rude, know-it-all receptionist) would make such a clearly-false statement. I even asked the mechanic, "how does a check engine light come on in the first place? With a sensor?" He said, "of course". I then said, "Are sensors always perfect? Is there something about this sensor that makes it, unlike every other mechanical device, fail-proof? How can you possibly be certain that I need a new catalytic converter without even inspecting the vehicle or viewing an engine error code?" After calling him out on the absurdity of his argument, he got angry, backtracked and changed the subject. He immediately started telling me that if I change the catalytic converter, it has to be OEM, and that I shouldn't get one second-hand. I profusely agreed, telling him that I would never even consider doing that. Strangely, he repeated the same statement. I called him out again -- asking him why he changed the subject so abruptly. He didn't have an answer. He got angry and defensive. I expect any mechanic to have the ability to think critically and logically in the course of their work. I was shocked that a mechanic who works for a such a supposedly-reputable business would be willing to unequivocally recommend a $2,000+ repair in an instant. I was met with anger and resistance in both instances, when I objected. All of these when my vehicle hadn't even left the parking lot. I was even more shocked that a mechanic would make the asinine statement that any part of any vehicle is literally perfect and fault-proof. I don't think it's a coincidence that they're willing to make such an illogical and wrong assertion when the conclusion that necessarily follows is that I need to spend a massive amount of money. They argued that somehow, a part from a Toyota 4Runner exhibits a property that no electromechanical device in the history of mankind has ever been able to do: be completely, perfectly, unable to fail. So, needless to say, I took it to another locally-owned shop. He did the ethical thing by inspecting the oxygen sensor and investigating the issue in general. Unlike at Dan's Toy Shop, he did his job with integrity. Guess what? The sensor was faulty. He replaced it and I haven't had any issues since. After reading other reviews, I noticed a pattern: Myself and others are taking their vehicle to Dan's Toy Shop with a positive, eager and excited attitude, only to find that it's a shockingly disreputable business. read more

Took our 2003 Lexus there and was told they would try to work us in on Friday. They did not so the car sat there all weekend. On Monday, after calling them multiple times in the morning where no one answered, they tell us they recommend not fixing the car and that online they are selling our same vehicle for what the repairs would cost... Not sure how telling me that I should purchase someone else's used car (with who knows what issues) is a solution!!! So after waiting all day for them to send a written quote so we could see why it was to cost us $8.5k in parts in their opinion, they then charge us $75 for giving us the estimate (mind you for work they won't do) then we have to pay again to have the car towed from their shop. Will never make that mistake again. read more

After taking my Toyota to the dealer since I purchased it, I was tired of walking out with a $500 bill after every service. Dan's Toy Shop has the policy of fixing/replacing things when they are broken or in need, not pushing you into unnecessary sales at certain mile markers. Just bought a 2006 Prius. I use the car for work (100K miles a year), so it's pretty important for me to keep it well maintained. Websites and message boards have conflicting information on the best maintenance techniques for these cars, so I was looking for someone with actual hybrid training to distill all the bullshit. After trying out another local Prius specialist that was just too far away from my house, I read The Toy Shop's bio on their website and got charmed by it. I knew I needed brakes and a wheel bearing replaced, so I brought it into Dan's. Very fair pricing, they took the kind of interest and care in my car that I need in order to be comfortable with someone digging into it, and most importantly, they didn't insult my intelligence. I won't blow up their spot by detailing exactly what they did for me, but suffice to say it deserves a plate of cookies, which I will be bringing them tomorrow. read more

I have taken my car to Dan's a couple of years ago and I received excellent service. I was disappointed to learn that they do not offer free estimates anymore. I asked if I decide to have them do the work would they include it in the repair price and they told me they do not. Too bad. :( Angela responded saying that her technicians deserve to get paid and I do agree. I also like to support small businesses and satisfied customers are their livelihood. Dan's Toy Shop is so good that I refuse to even consider buying a car other than one they service (Toyota, Lexus, Scion)! They are impeccably honest, competent and have very fair prices. Over the years they have proven over and over that they can be trusted. At this point, I hand my car over to them, have them do whatever repairs and maintenance they deem necessary and don't feel the need to question them about any of it. They have never let me down. They are professional, prompt and perform their work with a pride and caring you can only find in a family owned business. I'll agree with other posts about rude staff. Service staff was rude when answering my questions. I went in telling them the DTC code I had and was questioned by someone who is not a tech or mechanic. Was then charged $50 to confirm the diagnosis I provided. This diagnosis including nothing but clearing code and driving my car until code came on again. They quoted me a $1200 repair, that included dealer prices on parts, They wanted to charge me $1000 for a $700 part I did not need. The shop would not let me supply OEM parts because they mark up their parts to dealer prices. A waste of my time and money. I repaired the car myself for $30 using OEM Toyota part and half an hour of labor. Why pay the dealer, when you can pay these guys the same price for parts and get rude responses to questions. read more

My 2009 Toyota Corolla went in for repairs to Dan's Toy shop. I can't say enough great things about the excellent service I received from them. They were very responsive to my questions and was very thorough in diagnosing the problem. Leslie was very professional and pleasant to deal with. I felt the shop went above and beyond and I appreciate the up front information. Not like many of the past shops and dealerships that I've dealt with who try and sell me other repairs. I have a 2002 Lexus RX300 and these guys know it inside and out! I am so happy that I found this place! You know, after reading some of the reviews here, there are always some people that will find fault with even the best - so judge for yourself. I have been taking my car to Dan's for a couple of years now. They do what is needed and don't have you spend money on something that isn't. Every time I get my car back from them, (especially Cameron), it purrs like a kitten. Believe it or not, I have moved temporarily to Los Angeles, and I STILL bring it to Dan's for all my work. You can't trust mechanics in Los Angeles, and I completely trust Dan's! One time I brought it in for an oil change and inspection and told them how there was this noise emanating from my dash. Dan actually jumped in and put 4 hours of his own time investigating the noise - low and behold, he found the problem and when I got it back, he had completely silenced all noises and rattles that I didn't even mention to him! I am so pleased with the service there. Even the girls who work the desks understand the cars and know what might or might not be the problem! If you have a Toyota or Lexus, I recommend this place over anything else in town. The person who wrote a review saying you'd be better off going to the dealer is completely delusional - you are never better off at the dealer for service - worst place to go. Dan's Toy Shop really looks out for the customer and only does what really needs to be done. Five Stars!!!! read more
