I would like to say something positive about our first experience using an interior designer to…read moreremodel our kitchen, bathroom and floors of our condo, but working with Michèle Tremblay was a huge disappointment and a terrible waste of money. There were so many red flags which being novices, my husband and I just ignored or had assumed was normal behavior for designers. First, Michèle Tremblay's website has no before or after photos.... just photos. Most of her business is made up of remodel projects and therefore naturally customers want to see how the residence was transformed. What does she claim she worked on exactly? How did the residence look before she and her design team got there? No one knows! Then, as soon as Michèle Tremblay arrived at our apartment to assess the project she quickly announced that she does not like working in Montreal and she does not like remodeling condos. What?! My husband and I thought that was strange since we thought it was odd she would take the job since she knew we lived in the city of Montreal in a condo and not a house in the suburbs. Also, she never mentioned the cost of her visit until the end of her visit ($100 cash or cheque, to be paid immediately). During that initial visit we gave her a copy of the architectural floor plan of our apartment (provided by the builder of the condo) with measurements of the walls and rooms to assist her in designing the new kitchen and bathroom. Despite this, she insisted on measuring the walls herself which later we discovered she mis-measured one by 6 inches and another by 8 inches. So essentially we paid $100 to have our walls poorly measured, which potentially would have had terrible consequences when the cabinets went in had we not discovered her error. Another thing that struck me as odd during that visit was how taciturn she was, never once voicing any ideas about what we should consider doing or which colors would best suit the interior. Most creative people are all too generous with their feedback and now we were paying Ms. Tremblay for ideas and she was as silent as a tomb. Very odd! Two days after her visit we received a contract for her services which we signed and returned to her with a cheque for $1600 (the first of two payments) to retain her services. Two weeks later she invited us to come to her design office to see the plans. My husband took off the morning from work so that we could see the plans. We were so excited to see her ideas on paper, however when we arrived she handed us a floor plan that looked exactly like the floor plan we gave her when she came to our condo. And that was it! No design concepts to share with us, no mock ups of our new kitchen and bathroom, NOTHING! As we left that meeting, I turned to my husband and said "we have been screwed by this hack!" Words cannot describe how crestfallen we felt! Yet, having wasted $1700 on this designer we now had no money left over to spend on another designer and so we decided cut our losses with Influence Design; we had no other choice but to conceptualize our condo remodel without a designer. In the end, my husband and I worked together to draw up the plans for the renovation ourselves so that our contractor had something to work off of. It was hard work and required a ton of research, but in the end we feel we did a pretty good job and we love our "new" condo. Now when I hear Influence Design I frown and roll my eyes.
