Central is a place you meet people, so you might say, meet you in central at 4pm and then you get there at 3.30pm and you have to wait. So what do you do? You go to Basement Books and peruse their countless books with bright yellow stickers advertising their low and affordable price. Danger number two: Because these books that you're perusing are cheap, you can justify the price even if you're not sure whether you even need the book. 'Oh, a history of Physics' I've always been interested in Physics, and it's only $9.95 I should probably buy this and learn about Physics. Danger number three: Their range is gigantic! I almost said 'ginormous', but that's not a word. What I meant was Hugantic! There are literally thousands upon thousands of books and they're always receiving new stock. They have art sections, computer sections, history, film, personal growth, science fiction, literature, even books like the dictionary, which, had I purchased a copy last I was in, would have saved me the embarrassment of using a non-word like 'ginormous'. So beware of Basement Books. You have been warned. The bookshop is in a great location, the titles are cheap and the range extraordinary. I have a pile of books in my room almost as tall as I am that I have yet to read, opportune purchases that came at me as I strolled amidst the aisles killing time. A book on deadly diseases for $4.95, I'm not going to find that bargain again. Buy! Buy! Buy!

In this day and age of Kindle and Kobo and Nook, a solid read (and I mean one that you can…read moreliterally hold and turn pages beneath your fingers) comes pretty cheap. You really do need to head in to see what they've got because I find their online catalogue lacking and sometimes the staff don't even know what they're stocking. The outside disguises how big this place really is, as it has sections for anything from classic fiction to travel books and bios. It has a pretty decent selection of art supplies as well (I'm no art student, but it does cater for scrapbooking hobbies or the amateur artist if you're after it). Right in the back corner they have a little children's section which I found perfect for my six year old sister who's going through her first reading phase. I bought her a collection of these tiny Winnie the Pooh classics, and a special anniversary edition of Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit and Friends stories which averaged around $4 and $12 respectively. They have tons of different hard cover books (some of which are pop up!) which were surprisingly cheap, but more importantly, were invaluable in keeping kids (of all ages) entertained for hours.

There are many ways to find and search for any books that one is looking for. I personally just go section by section. If there's a book I cannot find, I go to their computers to search for it. Thanks to amzn (though I do love amzn. Been an amzn shareholder since I was a baby...thanks to mommy for buying those beautiful shares....haha and still am), we no longer have big beautiful books/gift stores like we use to in the ancient days. So if you want, you may have to travel to DOWN UNDER to get some old school R&R. I did, LOL!! You've gotta visit this place when you visit the land down under!! Highly recommend it!!

On lighter notes staff were scarce and while nice didnt have what I was looking for. Books were in the best condition of the two and I was impressed by that as again I don't have that where I'm from. Despite that Sydney will eventually be my home I'll definitely be looking to shop in Melbourne more for the genres of my tastes.

With that in mind, I can begin. Berkelouw books is the only second hand book shop in Leichhardt and is situated in the handy location of, right across the road from Norton Plaza. The first floor of Berkelouw is dedicated to new books with the sections divided into the appropriate and expected categories but with the exception of a specials/recommended table. A wall with the new titles and a staff picks shelf. Take a journey upstairs and you'll find yourself in second hand land where a large selection of both literature and reference books await you. If you're feeling lucky you can wade through the shelves of the, 'yet to be sorted' books. Or simply head to the aisle of your interest and navigate through the alphabetical titles there. Berkelouw is a beautiful book shop, worthy of extended browsing and buying. The wine bar upstairs is also quite nice and is a fantastic place to relax with friends or alone, with a good book and a glass of red. Sadly, the downstairs roadside cafe is not as great as Berkelouw's other elements. Despite the perfect location, directly opposite the Norton Plaza and in the heart of Leichhardt, Berkelouw's cafe prices are quite expensive and, what's more, the prices are not indicative of the standard of the meals, with the food and coffee being of poor quality. If you're after a good location in Leichhardt then you've got it here. If you're after a good book or a great gift, then you've got it here too. If you're after a great breakfast with value for money then there are plenty of good options in your surrounding suburbs.

I'm generally simply peering in the front window and lured in by the beautiful hard covers on pride of display. And if you don't see it, they'll order anything in for you. The problem is, once inside, it's very hard to ever want to leave this tranquil setting - a far cry from any other inner city retail environment. So more often than not, I manage to lose a little too much time and emerge to find a luke warm coffee awaiting up the road. Can't think of the perfect gift to buy your mate... ? If you can't find a book for them in The Hill of Content, then you may as well give up.

It is situated just below the cinemas and I popped in to find some childrens books for my nieces birthday. I'm not sure how they do survive and remain competitive, but it will be a sad day if a place like this does close down one day. There are some that say book stores are a dying breed. In fact, it kind of comes over you like a cloud when you waltz through the shop's doors. I found Brays to be a very curious little bookshop indeed. From what I could tell, they have three sections in their bag. If you're looking for a cookbook, any kind of culinary almanac at all, you can likely find it here. And what about travel books? With atlases, travel guides and travel related fiction and non-fiction at your fingertips, I recommend you pop in here before you next step on an airplane. And if you happen to be under the age of 10, or know someone who is, Brays delivers in the children's department as well. They have picture book classics and fiction for those readers who are stepping into the land of more words than pics. But, wait a second, what if I am looking for some good old fashioned adult fiction? With a rinky dink little case along one side of Brays, I had a hard time believing their selection was anywhere near complete. But I guess I can't be too hard on an independent bookshop. As they die out like orchids in the garden of retail, I'm sure Brays can use all the support it can get.

Theres some good variety among the shelves, so you know theres no hidden agenda behind the store, just a bunch of popular books for sale. The place is colourful and inviting, the staff are great, and helpful when you're trying to find something, although if you're on a mission, I guess a boutique bookstore isn't where you'd go. But still, a great place to browse and get into the reading zone.

Apart from selling books, which it does and does quite well, Gleebooks also plays host to various…read moretalks and events which take place in the upstairs room of the Glebe Point Road shop. They hold book launches, established authors in conversation and every Sunday they host a book club, as well as, on the first Saturday of every month, a stand up comedy show. Wit Large, a stand up evening billed as "Smart Comedy for Smart People" is a night that has come out of a desire for comedians to longer have to tell jokes over the uproar of a drunken conversation, the clatter of cutlery or the various "witty" repartee of an inebriated audience member on their bucks party. The show also aims to keep its humour either brow or higher, and their website claims that each act is screened first to avoid sexism, homophobia and lazy or energetic racism. Each show comes equipped with a theme, such as, "Medicine", "Music" and "New Arrivals" and various professional comedians, some local, and seem even on the International level. The night was engineered by stand up comedian Dave Bloustein, who hosts each performance, and Carrie Hardie, the shows producer. Tickets are $15 each, and the night utilises the book shop well, as during the intermission, you're free to browse the paperbacks and hard covers that paint the walls surrounding the stage. I was lucky because I get inside about five minutes before he closed, so I got a good opportunity to look around. I have to be honest and say that as bookshop it wasn't one of the best that I have been to, and the stock didn't really impress me as much as it could have impressed me. Mind you, it stocks new as opposed to second-hand books, which is probably why it didn't grab my attention as much as a second-hand bookshop does (namely because secondhand bookshops always have something interesting inside, and tend to have that musty, used book, feel about it). Mind you, I did find a couple of interesting books, but still, with what is next door, it doesn't really jump out at me.

That was a sad day in the community to see The Barn go due to council issues. For a period of time this site was derelict, and now The Essential Ingredient provides another social hole for coffee drinkers to unite and rejoice. Chic, cute, trendy and cosy for those of us who happen to have all the time in the world on any given occasion on a Saturday morning in particular. Am a fan of their cooking equipment in particular, although my preferred choice would still be Victoria's Basement in the city. Still a great effort, and a beautiful delicatessen and an array of tinned gourmet foods including the semi and sun dried tomatoes, and even the tinned jelly beans which will give Crabtree and Evelyn a good run for their money. Its elegant, and it is great to see another quality food establishment with a cafe come here on this massive site again; although nothing can really replace the Barn in my books anyway, and yet my food standards are much higher than they used to be, although still not that high. Look out for their chocolate making classes, they are divine.
