You have a friend of a friend that said go to Robinson and now your wondering WTH do I do there? You are a tourist/wandering nomad thinking there's gotta be a reason to stop somewhere in the vast endless prairie land of North Dakota. You seek the meaning of life, a writer looking for inspiration, or maybe just someone to talk to. You are a local. Liar! You wouldn't be reading this. Ok, additional need to know items. If it's dark out and you blink, you'll literally drive right by this town without realizing. The locals don't wear cowboy hats. Yeah, yeah, there's pictures, out of state regulars. Cash, United States currency in small denominations please. Flash a Benjamin and you're impressing no one unless your buying a lot of beer for yourself and everyone in the bar. But you do get to ring the bell! Ring it like you have a pair or you get the buy another round. Repeat as necessary but it's more fun to roll dice for rounds. Looking for fancy mixed drinks or micro brews? Bismarck is an hour away. Are you a foodie? Hope you like pizza or go to Carol's. So why come here? It looks like another one bar town and there's plenty in North Dakota. You want a sterile modern bar go to Tuttle or Pettibone. You go to Hanson's for beer in a can, the stories, and history in the making. The summer events, especially Kidder County Classic dirt bike race, truck pull, and the 2-day music Center Fest (campers welcome). Conversation with genuine people. Bill Bender. There's a unique story behind most of the decor in the bar and depending on the day and maybe a Jackson he'll tell you. Everything from The Wall Street Journal, identified as a state landmark, CBS Morning news, the town trebuchet, the ICDC, Dale Watson, chicken sh** bingo, the birth place of spoken word karaoke, and so much more. He's also got the fastest modern WiFi in the area. People from around the world have been here and they'll remember the experience for the rest of their lives. So stop reading, get driving, and join their ranks.

If you've ever flown into Winnipeg, and looked out the right window of the plane at exactly the…read moreright time, then maybe you've caught a glimpse of Park River, ND... which is your loss, because this is one of those little towns on the high plains with the familiarity of a thousand others and a unique charm all its own. Nestled amidst the shops and cafes along the main drag through town, right across the street from the post office where the gal behind the counter knows everyone's name, is the Top Hat Bar. You'll recognize the sign by the larger Budweiser sign just below it, hanging out over the hundred year old sidewalk. Not sure if this was the same guys who ran the Top Hat Bar in neighboring Pisek, but I didn't ask. Inside, it's what you would expect of a small bar in a North Dakota town: quaint, comfortable, a mix old signs and pictures on the walls, probably a photo of someone holding a walleye in here. The usual offerings are served up here with hospitality to slake your thirst. Cold beer, a full bar, and a friendly sort of vibe, even if you're from Kale-ifoornya, dontchaknow. On July 4, the parade heads right through town in front of the bar, and it seems local law enforcement (most of them are in the parade) are lax about stepping outside with your Bloody Mary in a plastic cup. Uff'dah, you betcha. Great place to stop in if you're out exploring the high prairie, and need to wash the dust outta your throat.
