The station has a waiting room on each platform which are open from 05:45-20:00 Monday-Saturday with a later opening time on Sunday, There are self service ticket machines located by the bike shed on platform 1 and by the waiting room on platform 2. The second is covered so best used in poor weather. To cross the platforms customers must take the foot bridge over or in special circumstances such as the eldery or disabled my be escorted over a barrow crossing which exits in to the NCP managed car park.

There are a couple of waiting rooms available and a popular pub which has various deals on and is very lively in the evenings. There is a large car park which overlooks some fields. Currently it is being built on to provide a multi storey parking facility. There is a short stay parking bay closest to the station foot entrance. There is also ample storage for bikes.

It's a fabulous journey back into the past made all the more enjoyable as virtually all the staff on the trains and stations are volunteers who have a real passion for the days of steam. Throughout the year there are a number of 'specials' where people may travel whilst wearing period clothing, or have a day out with Thomas the Tank engine or go on the Santa Special which make the trips more memorable than the usual weekday trip that I had experienced. The only criticism I had really was the cost, which for one adult was £9.50 and a family ticket comprising of 2 adults and 2 children was £29, which I imagine might make some families think twice about doing the journey.

Literally, every seat is taken and there can end up being a few people standing in the vestibules. What's particularly annoying is when they keep stepping on the sensor that opens the sliding door. *slam* *slam* *slam*. For an hour. - So when the peak time trains are full, that's only standard class. There are three First class carriages as well and I have yet to see them even close to being utilized. If the price for First wasn't three times as much as Standard, I might consider it. Why not remove one of these and add a standard class? - Not only do they not have power at the seats (even in First), the arms on the chairs do not move. This makes getting into and out of the window seat a serious challenge involving balance and bending. - The actual ride is uncomfortable. The train sways from side to side often, plus there is a serious lurch every minute or two as the train speed changes and the carriage gets "bumped" or "yanked" by the carriage behind or in front. - Out of 16 trips on East Anglia between Liverpool Street and Norwich, four have been late. Two of those were more than 30 minutes late. One of them, over an hour late. For a two hour trip, that's out of hand. Last week, I made a purchase from the buffet car. The attendant was very polite and very helpful. But she didn't have a swipe machine for my credit card. She had to put it in one of those sliding imprint machines that runs over the card to get the numbers. I haven't seen one of those in ten years! Sadly, I have no choice but to continue riding East Anglia for the next few months, as my customer is in Norwich.

The is a large car park managed by NCP which is quite considerable in size with parking meters that accept cash or card payment. Facility wise there is a small wine bar open in the evenings and a small cafe/newsagents. The paper shop can be found on platform 2 which is just through the booking hall. Outside of opening hours tickets can be purchased from self service ticket machines both of which are located under cover in the event of bad weather. Wheelchair access is available to each platform. There are level crossing barriers which drop when services approach blocking traffic and pedestrians from passing.

The station is largely desolate late at night and there are even some bats about that I've seen. The platforms are open and have smaller trains transporting people. I look back fondly on those weekend day trips, the promise the station held and the fun I had leaving it. My first band even had a photo shoot there! But enough nostalgia - all the casual traveller needs to know is there are two platforms, a waiting room and toilets on one of the platforms (the ladies is a really long, thin, bizarre single cubicle). There's even a proper ticket machine these days - a big development! What else? The cash machine at the front of the building charges you £1.75 to withdraw cash (booo!), the pub across the road does brilliant food and there are usually cabs at the front of the station but the town centre is only 15 minutes walk away and there are buses too. The trains and buses don't run very late though, you're in a countryside market town now.

Just a small station with some regular services to London…read more If you're coming to the station from Norwich you have to make a change at Colchester more often than not. There's several ticket windows open to buy tickets from a person or a machine just outside as you arrive. There's a lift down to the platforms for anyone with difficulties or luggage. There's nothing in the form of shops on the station itself, just the usual snack and drink vending machine, though during the day there is a mini vehicle that sells magazine and across the way there is a juice and coffee bar. There's a taxi rank just opposite.
