Inside isn't much different. There are different rooms that you can go into, some appearing to pop out of nowhere. I was pretty shocked at how large this place was. It seemed so tiny from the outside, but it's deceivingly large. Schooner specializes in rare and out-of-print books, although I did notice some regular old books there too. They have paper signs indicating which sections are which and what each shelf contains. I was drawn to the mystery section which, oddly enough, was located right next to the children's section. Once I perused the mysteries I was drawn to the children's. I found one book that I remember reading when I was a child and was instantly pulled into a state of nostalgia. I think I spent a few minutes reading through it again. There was a nice older couple working the counters. They were both busying themselves on the computers while a couple other folks and I were browsing around. They were cute and the store was cute too. Top notch, I say!

Sometimes this is a good thing (see: Woozles), sometimes it can be so boring you'd rather repeat the second grade than have to weigh in yet again on which 'Foundations of Reading: An Instructional Text' series looks more interesting. Tattletales is one of the few spots that does a great job of balancing booksmarts with bookswagger. Sure, there's plenty for teachers looking to stock up on new strategies but there's even more great books, toys, and activities to keep kids of all ages (and grown-ups who turn into kids when shopping in kids book sections) entertained while they do so. There's plenty of space outside for parking and inside for easy shopping - you don't have to awkwardly dance with other shoppers as you cram into the same aisle. Staff are smart, helpful and really know their business rather than just minimum wage earning teens who text from behind the cash as you ask them questions. Whether you know what you're looking for or not, they can help you out. While I don't know much about their special events, I do know that during my visit, Sheree Fitch just happened to be there for a reading - a favourite from my childhood ever since being given a signed copy of Toes in my Nose. They're a good mixture of a children's bookstore, a toy store, and an excellent resource for teachers. The new store has a spacious clean setup and the displays are an inviting feast for the eyes. The toy section has a wide array of educational and just plain fun stuff. There's a great selection of Lego and Playmobile with some sets I haven't seen elsewhere. They also stock board games and puzzles. This is a toy store I could spend quite a while perusing. I don't have any children, but I adore this store with my childhood heart and love of whimsy. I've found the prices to be fair and often less than the big competitors. They also offer orders on any book or product they don't have in stock. The book section is exactly what a children's bookstore should be. There is a ton of variety in titles and the layout offers a much more intimate setting than the big box stores. The displays offer suggestions on the best pics for books and prominently shows what's new. In the exploding market of youth books they seem to carry everything. Not just Twilight. They shelve all the top titles along with little known gems. Tattletales' staff are friendly and helpful. They give you that local feel only an independent bookstore can. A definite must for book and toy lovers.

Whenever one thinks of souvenirs, or shops in an area geared for tourists, one thinks of teddy…read morebears dressed as Mounties, ashtrays with photos of something Nova Scotian, key chains with red maple leafs. Well, in the Historic Properties down near the Halifax/Dartmouth Ferry terminal is a wonderful shop that will definitely have you see things differently. Mr Levasseur is the proprietor of this wonderful establishment, but more about him in a minute. First let me mention the books for sale, they...and everything else in the store, for that matter, is made locally somewhere in Atlantic Canada. The books range from novels written by local authors to historical and biographical accounts of Atlantic Canada as well as glorious cookbooks (my weakness) and beautiful children's books that share stories about native culture, local animals and fish. It was with such pride that Mr Levasseur gave me a tour of the rest of the shop's treasures, pointing out beautiful walking sticks carved in the Annapolis Valley, hand knit and then felted ladies hats made in Quebec (everything else is from east of there and north all the way up to Baffin Island, like sealskin boots made by the Inuit and Inui). There are soapstone carvings, exquisite deer catchers, and my personal favorite - carvings by David Joseph Brooks, Mi'kmaq artist and carver. He creates beautiful art from native paintings to moose antlers and stone carvings. I could go on forever, but it really is worthy of a visit. The contents are awesome and Mr Levasseur is a charming story teller.

My parents were looking for a book on the Cabot trail and were told this store had one so we…read moreventured down to the Historic Properties. Sadly, no book on the Cabot trail was there but they had a nice book that was made up of mainly photos on Cape Breton. I was able to get a calendar on Cape Breton that was actually printed in Canada so that was a welcome surprise. My favorite items were the hand knitted mittens, hats and scarves with lobsters on them. The store owner gets them from a lady in Atlantic Canada which is a nice touch. There are a lot of locally made items in this store and I would recommend stopping by.
