My experience at Jim Berkemeier's Barber Shop was enough to make me reconsider this practice, heck it was enough to make me reconsider anyone else ever cutting my hair again. The man who runs this place has no idea what the word "customer service" means. Nor, I'm afraid, does he understand the words "tolerance" and "unity." From the moment I sat down he barraged me with a litany of neighborhood problems -- all of which he blamed on African Americans that lived in the neighborhood. When I asked, very innocently, if he knew any African Americans personally, if there was anyone he called a friend, he called me a jerk and accused me of judging him. This is not the type of interaction I want to be having with a man who is holding a pair of sharp scissors aimed at the back of my head, much less someone I want to pay for the honor. I repeat, DO NOT GO HERE.

I always feel like it takes more work than it should to explain what I want and it rarely comes out right. I've solved that by shaving my head, growing long hair, and doing it myself with clippers. I happened to be nearby and see that no one was waiting and the shop was open and I hadn't gotten around to using the clippers in a while, so I decided to give this shop a try. Vernon cut my hair and all I gave him was a length and what I got was the perfect haircut, exactly what I've been trying to get for years. I'll be going back and if he's consistent, my clippers will be getting a long rest.
