A VERY FAMOUS MECHANICAL CLOCK IN MUNICH'S MARIENPLATZ…read more====================================================== My husband and I were walking around the Marienplatz on Friday, April 17, 2026 just before noon and the plaza started filling up with people waiting to see the life-size figures. The show lasts about fifteen minutes and starts daily at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. from March to October. The clock has 43 bells and 32 life-size figures and was added during the completion of the Neues Rathaus or New Town Hall in 1908. We found a good spot to stand and wait on the opposite side of the plaza which was great because we were in the shade. If you ever visit Munich you definitely have to check this out. There are plenty of places to shop or dine nearby.

Fresh flowers, meats, cheeses, baked goods and fresh baked breads, and of course beer and wine bars. There's something here for everyone and it's always fun checking out all the different booths. I walked over every morning for fresh Cappuccino at Leo's Kaffee and would pick up a pastry at one of the bakeries. In the afternoon, I would stop by the pickle guy and buy a few of the best pickles I've ever eaten. So many choices from sweet to sour, spicy and my favorite a super sour with a spicy horseradish. The long line moves quickly and if you like pickles, you must stop here.

We brought sandwiches, snacks and water which made for a little picnic. The garden is enormous and beautifully maintained. Wish we had gardens such as this in the USA. I think this may even be bigger than the Central Park in NYC - most certainly safer! We went on a Monday but it was still full of people. From what it seems, it's a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Locals wade into the water and there are even some spots where they surf! I believe there's even a lifeguard in one of the areas. They don't just let anyone surf though and there are some warning signs about its dangers. Hubby and I were able to find a bench in the shade where we just enjoyed the scenery for a while. It was perfect for our jet lag recovery The park is also within walking distance from many other landmarks in Munich, such as The Residence, the Odeonsplatz, Mariensplatz, The Munich Cathedral, among many others.

There's a beautiful river with plenty of waterfront space to relax and even a place to watch surfers practicing. There's a huge beer garden by the Chinese Tower, great for a break or people watching. There's lots of well maintained pathways for walking snd bikes. Munich residents are lucky to have this space!

I stumbled across this must visit spot when I arrived to check out the BMW Museum and Welt. It is…read morethe tallest building in Munich and offers unrivaled views. This is a must see while in town. There is a restaurant, but I think you have to book ahead of time. The cafe there is ok, but the service is slow as there is one guy and he puts effort into the drinks he makes. Lastly this visit allows me to stumble onto a music festival that I will now be attending. A must see.

Well worth the €9 to get 185 meters above the ground by elevator on this crisp and clear day…read more Definitely keep an eye on the weather before you make the trek as it's only worth it if it's a clear day. And today? Clear as clear can be. Despite Oktoberfest being well underway, on this Saturday afternoon there was no waiting to pay the entrance fee and only a minute or so to wait for the next elevator to whisk me to the enclosed observation deck. So far, all of this is completely accessible. The enclosed observation deck is a full 360 degrees view and you can walk all the way around. Etched on the glass are pointers that tell you what that structure is off in the distance. That was helpful. There is also the Rock Museum (which is not about stones but is actually about music). It was not crowded at all. At this point, the handicap accessible ends. There is a stair case up to an open area (bars to prevent people from going over) and then *another* set of stairs for a completely unobstructed view of the skyline with no bars. It was windy as heck and I was a little worried that it would take my phone out of my hands. The view? Amazing. All the way to the horizon. Simply beautiful!
