However, when checking out I was sort of attacked by the front desk lady as I had left one of my room key cards in my room. She made me go back and get it - as otherwise, she would penalize me. I was shocked. I can not recall that someone dared to talk to me like this in front of my staff. She made me look as if I had attempted to steal the crown jewels. Despite I liked the hotel, it is very unlikely I would go there again, especially as it was difficult to book in the first place.

I didn't like that the carpet in our room had stains and luckily we always bring our own room slippers during our travels. The bed was comfy and the bed linens were clean. Our bathroom was fine was well. The hotel is about 15 minutes walk from Hamburg Central Station or 10 minutes walk from "Steinstraße" U-Bahn station. The hotel is also close to Bus #3 stops but this bus line didn't run that often during our time in Hamburg.

The hotel is very new and features wild bright colors and bold patterns. In the 1960s (way before my time) that style as called "groovy." As you walk in, you are greeted by a sea of white interspersed with bright colorful accent pieces like lamps and chairs. The pod seats in the lobby were especially popular. The dining area is directly adjacent to the lobby. You can purchase breakfast when booking your room and I would definitely recommend doing that. There are not many breakfast places nearby and the hotel's breakfast was quite good. Our room continued the wild 1960s white with wild colors trend. Everything was new and functioned perfectly. One thing we did not like was when you turn on the bathroom light, the translucent mirror from the bathroom lights up the bedroom. Another thing we didn't care for is the 10 minute walk to the downtown through an area that is industrial and run down. It's definitely a safe walk but not very attractive. The hotel is in an area that is rapidly being revitalized and that area may soon be cleaned up. Despite its minor negatives, we would definitely return to this hotel.

Wonderful experience from every perspective!…read more Arriving blurry-eyed from San Francisco at 8am, I could only hope Sofitel would allow me to check-in early. To my great delight, there was 1 room available. Okay, we're off to a good start... The room was very nice. A bit small, but enough space and if prefer quality over quantity any day. Free wifi was convenient, but connectivity was too slow for streaming so I upgraded to premium wifi. Problem solved. Next I headed down to breakfast. The buffet is fantastic. Fresh breads, pastries, fruit, coffee, meats, and cheeses. Yum. Despite promising myself I'd stay awake until at least 6pm, my bed convinced me otherwise. After passing out from 3pm-8pm, I headed down to the basement gym. Solid for a hotel; another box checked. Next was a shower and dinner. I ate in the hotel restaurant given everything nearby was pretty much closed at 10pm on a Sunday. The fare was quite good and atmosphere outside near the canal was peaceful. I selected the baked veal and opted for a glass of red wine. Adjusting 9 time zones is never fun, but thank you Sofitel for making it much easier!

The bewildering thing is that whilst the waiters, maitre d' and the menu all seem Italian, the food seems remarkably French - lots of jus and reduction, not so much of the fresh flavour. If someone knows the chef, say bonjour from me. Very stylish, and seems to hit it off with the well-heeled of Eppendorf. Really good wine list, including a great Sardinian white (can't remember the name). To go to the toilet you have to voyage far into the centre of the earth, and may well miss coffee navigating back. Front desk was very nice to work with getting checked in and out. Breakfast was nice. Location is also pretty good, both the S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations are pretty close to the area with plenty of food and grocery stores nearby (2-5 minute walk). Pretty peaceful location. Overall, enjoyed my stay.

Yet, the place is quiet and has lots of (Swiss-style) character. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We were actually surprised by the quality of our rooms - very clean, practical (plenty of power outlets, safe, storage spaces, lights, lockable drawer), stylish and comfortable. The price was very competitive for the area. One great perk: every guest gets a free three day transit pass for the city. The hop on hop off buses, if you're into such things, leave literally in front of the main entrance. Almost everything else in the city can be reached on foot. We would definitely stay here again.
