Living in an area (windsor) that has only chain style donuts gets very boring. On a recent trip I had to stop here at Dat Donut and I am sure glad that I did. I pretty much got every style of donut that they had on the shelf at the time when we went. If you were to only get one it would have to be their apple fritter. My wife thought it was ridiculous that I wanted to order more than one because it was so large (larger than your head). So I finally made my way out to Dat today with my boys, perfect way to get Max to nap since it did take me almost an hour with some shitty directions from Google Maps! Thanks! HAHA So...the neighborhood was pretty much everything I was expecting it to be so I wasn't shocked by the sketchiness at all, but it was my first time given service through bullet proof windows. But I am SO glad I finally came in here...the doughnuts are seriously AMAZING!! And I am very picky about my doughnuts...so that is saying a lot! And the service, so friendly and cute, I could have taken that little lady home with me and made her my new grandma! She was so helpful with telling my annoying ass what everything was that I wish I would have left her a tip or something. Anyways...I ordered a dozen doughnuts including a buttermilk, original, chocolate cake, jelly, Bavarian creme, long john and a blueberry. And I, or course, got the Big Dat! Holla atcha girl...yes I did! Everything I have tried, and I would rather not say how many I have tried since I have only had them in my possession for about 4 hours, has been SOOOO good! Definitely worth the trip! Its definitely my favorite Donut Shop in Chicago! I gave 4 stars because I only really like the Glazed Donuts here. The cake donuts are also pretty good but I wish the others had glaze and frosting on them because they are pretty dry. The glazed donuts including the Big Dat are simply to die for and a must have. There are almost no bakeries in Chicago I would give 5 stars anymore, but this place has been my favorite donut place for awhile. It opens pretty early on a Saturday, the perfect time to avoid traffic (cuz it's a ways out on the south side if you are a westsider or northsider you kinda have to take the highway) and get DAT DONUT. The strawberry glazed donut looks like it has real puree in it. and really everything here is great and always has been. Glazes at most donut places be they chains or bakeries taste just like sugar icing. These glazes actually taste like they have substance--chocolate in the choc glaze, strawberry in the strawberry glaze. One thing of note about any of their glazed donuts (i.e. raised/yeast) is that they weigh TWICE what any other shop's glazed donut weighs but still light and fluffy. So good. Dat Donut is very good but clearly Old Fashion Donut aka the Donut Shop in Roseland (112th & Michigan) was the prototype. They taste damn near identical but the Roseland been around for 30+ years. Bad customer service from the girl that was working on Memorial Day (tonight) night. She was rude when my husband placed his order, and she had a nasty attitude when I placed mine. Honestly she needs to be fired. Entering Dat Donut, I did not feel safe especially after seeing the employee, serving customers, from behind a bullet-proof glass. Went two times too many: First time, before entering a guy opened the door and asked for 'spare change'. Second time, while inside, a woman asked for 'spare change' and to buy her some donuts. Yea for the parking lot, although we arrived in the morning and there was plenty of street parking, they have about 12 varieties avail and donut holes. Thank you thank you thank you thank you unless I go to a donut shop order a jelly doughnut then the trouble starts when I asked what flavor is the jelly inside of the donut. No one seems to know I get all kinds of answers except for the answer of the flavor of the jelly that's inside of the donuts I've got an answers like its a jelly donut my reply I gather that what kind of jelly is in the donut reply fruit jelly wow what flavor fruit and that's when the employee looks at me like I'm an imposition and asshole a burden or just that guy is asking me a question and I don't have the freaking answer. I can understand not knowing the answer but not researching it and finding out what kind it is is not only a lackluster customer service experience it's a part of that person not being trained properly and knowing the products that they are selling. That is the worst just the words to ask a service employee a question about something in their work environment that they should know we don't have the answers. I almost got arrested at a store in New Orleans because they would not know the flavor of the jelly inside the donut and I was labeled as a troublemaker because I was starting trouble trying to find the answer to a typical question far as what flavor do you have in your donut. I work in the food service industry I know that people can die from eating peanuts when they have a peanut allergy it is nothing to play with and I am surprised at the store do not pay more attention and are there employees with the knowledge that they need to be able to answer questions. But however the day that I walked into that that donut there was a nice :-) that greeted me there and we talked donuts because I used to make donuts as well and I asked her what kind of jelly was in the jelly filled donut and she knew the right answer it was strawberry filled and she's a very pleasant person the cashier was thats why I left her a $5 tip. But if you catch them at the wrong time, you might get stuck with a stale donut. But when they're fresh, no other donut shop can touch them.
