Having walked around and past this memorial many times over many years, I now discover its actually called the Pioneer Memorial. I remember a school excursion with my Grade 4 class (from Glenelg Primary School) when our teacher told several of us off for running all over the steps of the memorial. She went on to explain to us that this structure had been built for a reason and that we were disrespecting it by running all over it. That reason was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the state in 1936. Her lesson managed to instill an admiration for memorials and statues and in interest in finding out what they were all about that has lasted with me till the present day. Isn't it funny the things that stick with you? I should also point out those steps we were told off for running on all those years ago are no longer there as the memorial has been built up around the edges. The Pioneer Memorial commemorated four of the more significant settlers who came to make a new life in the free colony of South Australia. The names of Edward Gibbon Wakefield, Robert Gouger, Robert Torrens and George Fife Angas are inscribed on a plaque on the side of the monument to commemorate their efforts in securing the foundation act of 1834 and sitting on top is a replica of HMS Buffalo, the ship they and the other first settlers sailed here aboard. This is obviously why I thought it was called the Buffalo monument as people generally seem to commemorate the ship rather than the settlers. Maybe it was my grade 4 teacher who called it by the wrong name and all these years I still believed her.

Without a doubt, Australia's most celebrated cricketer would have to be Donald Bradman. Known to…read moreall as 'The Don' there is a statue commemorating his sporting achievements just outside Adelaide Oval on Victor Richardson Road and it is simply one of most stunning statues I've seen in Adelaide. This larger than life bronze - it is actually a 2.5 metres - commemorates the sporting feats of a man who was viewed as a cult hero through his entire life and possibly will be forever more. I first noticed the statue one night as I was driving down Sir Edwin Smith Avenue from the opposite side of King William Road. The statue was perfectly lit from beneath and looked incredible in the evening light. I think I had the perfect viewing experience. Having visited the statue again, during the day and from a closer vantage point was a totally different experience. It was still a stunning piece of art but somehow different. Like the legend of the man, everything about the statue is oversized from Bradman's feet to his cricket bat. The artist is Robert Hannaford and depicts Bradman playing a shot. If you're a sports buff or you just appreciate good art, go and take a look but I suggest you go at night when viewing is at its best.

It depicts Sir Bradman performing his trade mark cover drive and quintessentially captures the movement and quality of Bradman's poise. The gaze of the work is strong, piercing almost, and adds to the vitality of the habit so well caught. The direction of Bradman's vision directs us up, so as to imagine the flight path of the ball he has just struck. The handling of the work is textural and loose. A lovely aged patina gives Hannaford's sculpture the air of antiquity adding credence to the eminence of Bradman's legend.

As you've walked around the streets of Adelaide in the past year or so, you might have noticed…read morethere are a new rash of murals and paste-ups appearing. While street art has been happening for a while in Adelaide, the city council has now jumped on board - displaying an unusual level of understanding and support. And so they should - street art is one of those rare phenomenons that manages to get people interested in art instead of feeling bored/threatened. Courtesy of Adelaide CIty Council, Topham Mall now has a designated area in which anyone can add to, without asking permission. There is something a little less exciting about legal street art - I love the way the illegal stuff works with the pre-existing built environment and the creativity that comes out of avoiding arrest and but also trying to make attention-grabbing works. Climbing to extremely dangerous heights, wandering around in abandoned buildings etc. But Topham Mall is good - the walls are literally dripping with paint. Although I love to see the work of the local street artists I already know, it is also good to see stuff appearing that has been done by nobody I'm familiar with. Although I appreciate the extremely detailed figurative pieces, I've been following this style for a while, so I feel a little more excited now seeing the typographical-tagging kind of stuff appearing. Watching the layers of paint build and build into strange abstract patterns on the crumbling brick is a nice bit of unintentional magic. The great thing about this kind of work is it is constantly regenerating - there is something new to look at nearly every time you walk past. It's right in a thoroughfare between Currie and Waymouth St too - so all different kinds of people will see it, not just art nerds.

While this may look like your ordinary footbridge across a sorry excuse of a river, there are…read moreactually quite a lot of stories behind it, stories that you learn if you actually end up going to Adelaide University. Apparently these stories involve not just blowing it up, but also suspending a Volkswagen Beetle underneath it (though these are probably just rumours that have become rather persistent, though I do believe the blowing it up one). Anyway, this footbridge basically connects the university with the sporting grounds on the other side of the river. It's not that there are actually proper university sporting teams, just clubs, but the grounds are technically owned by the uni, but they also form part of the parklands. Yeah, this bridge does bring back memories.

This beautiful old footbridge extends from the University of Adelaide over the Torrens River and…read moreonto the University owned Graduates Oval and Students Oval precinct. It was built at the end of the 1800s so it has a certain look about it, quite beautiful cast iron and sleek engineering. Not one of the great wonders of the world but certainly a minor wonder in Adelaide. It is a curious thing to walk over the bridge and consider how many and whom may have come one way or the other before you. It is not really a suitable bridge for feral children, without good safety measures and although it seems like a great fun place to play, they should not be left to play on it, though I doubt they'd do too much damage the bridge it if they were indeed left alone. Obviously if they fell the five or six meters onto the solid ground below or into the river they could disturb the ducks, so it is probably best to accompany them and probably even hold their hand at all times while crossing. Cyclists are asked to dismount before they get onto the footbridge, after all they call it a foot bridge for a reason.

Shiniest balls I've seen in SA…read more And I have, in fact, met up at the balls on more than one occasion, so I feel like I live here now. There is an actual name for this sculpture of spheres (I think it's actually "the spheres" or something insanely simple like that) but even Google maps has this listed as the Mall's Balls. So, there you go. Very shiny balls, excellent meeting place, and great for selfies.

Located in the pedestrian Rundle Mall (THIS is how K Street Mall in Sacramento should look like!), these balls are so famous they ended up in a Ben Folds song properly entitled "Adelaide." On the corner of Rundle and Pulteney Streets in the city is the Rundle Lantern. Launched in 2008…read morethe Rundle Lantern is a unique canvas that is computer driven, lights up at night and displays all sorts of moving images and digital art works across 748 LED panels. The content displayed on the lantern is constantly changing and anyone can submit material for use. You just have to make sure your content fits the specification guidelines as outlined on the Rundle Lantern website. The Rundle Lantern is entirely green powered which is great news. It's panels are 9 stories high and wrap around the UPark carpark on one of Adelaide's busiest intersections. The light show happens every night from sundown to midnight and is a major drawcard during special events like the Adelaide Fringe and the SALA Festival.

I. just. don't. get. it…read more Well, I mean I get that it's a wall of LED lights displaying constantly-changing digital artworks. It's pretty. But I'm not quite sure why this was installed where it is, why it's a "major draw card", and why the Adelaide City Council decided to put $2mil towards it. Phrases like "dynamic cultural canvas" just piss me off. Am I alone here? Part of my cranky pants stance is the fact it cost $2million to install the Lantern, according to the Adelaide City Council site. And while I'm super glad it's carbon neutral and solar powered, I just think it's a whole lot of cash that could've been used elsewhere with more benefit. But hey, doesn't every girl and her dog think she'd have a million better ideas on public funds and improving the city? I understand it's an attempt to create a convergence point but since it's launch in 2008 I'm not sure it has achieved that. The corner is not really a meeting place - there's nowhere to sit and watch the view (e.g. cafes), nor is it typically buzzing like Piccadilly Circus or Times Square, which I'm guessing are the models for the Lantern. It's not a natural convergence point for any reason - it's basically a transit zone, where people cross the road - and the Lantern isn't enough to effectively transform the space into what it isn't. Just one Adelaidean's opinion. End rant.

A Day Out isn't just for humans…read more These four life size bronzed pigs - Horatio, Oliver, Truffles and Augusta, arrived at Rundle Mall in 1999. They are a fun bunch to stumble upon while strolling and shopping Rundle Street. Be sure to get your selfies- with Oliver rummaging through the trash, Horatio sitting and greeting the crowds walking by, Truffles sniffing the ground, and Augusta who's out for a stroll too. They aren't hard to find, even on a busy crowded day.

I love this place :)…read more Well, it is more of a place of interest. As far as I am aware this is one of a series of fairy doors. Or something like that. This one is in the front of a shop called Naked in Rundle St. it is only about 7 inches high, but it brings a little bit of magic to the street :) There is not really any more to say about this. But i would love to know if there are any more of these around town anywhere - if there is anyone who knows about any more of these doors, I would love to know about them :) And for those of you who have never seen this door - check it out next time you are in Rundle St :)

Who is allowed through and what is the secret password? You get my drift... Like the Rosina Car Park, Frome St wall mural and giant fork on Melbourne St, it is just one of the many weird things I love about Adelaide.
