I'm glad my membership expired
The renovation work will be going on until ~May 2025. To date, since work started in Sept 2024 all members have been paying full price to workout in a gym where facilities have been disappearing slowly without upfront communication about timelines, or clear options for members during this period.
To add, membership prices went up for 2025, despite facilities being reduced by half. The pool and sauna facilities were a selling point - and as such memberships were charged at a premium. No alternatives or price changes have been made available during this period.
David Lloyd Club had options during this "€5.6 million transformation":
-They could have offered a reduced membership for all members while the works were on, to compensate for significantly reduced facilities.
-They could have offered to freeze memberships for free until the work is complete. (This was only offered once my "case had been escalated", and I had got in touch several times regarding the issue. Even then managerial staff were slow to reply due to high demand for customers to get in touch).
To be clear: By the time work is expected to be done, members who are mid-contract will have paid full price for 8 months of reduced facilities (no pool or sauna facilities, reduced classes; reduced space for stretching or free weights, reduced weight options; no cafe, machines and shower facilities) - Unless they have explicitly got in touch with the Ops Service Manage or Sales Manager or General Manager (an email you have to acquire at the reception desk), and requested to freeze their membership, for free. (Yes, you have to ask twice to get it for free, because initially you will still be charged a percentage of your monthly fee to freeze it).
David Lloyd have opted for none of the more members-focussed options above, and as such are creating member turnover. A shame as the customer facing staff at the gym (PTs, trainers, cleaning team) are fantastic, and it would be nice to be able to say the same for the rest.
After discussing this with the Management of the gym it has been made clear that David Lloyd has no intention of assisting it's members during this renovation period, but instead intend to charge over the odds for working out in a partial building site.
I will not be returning to David Lloyd, and I suggest you avoid signing up in the first place. read more
