Curious I decided to turn and drive into the suburban street where there are 6 shops next to each other. Besides the butcher the bakery was the only shop open. Walking in the aroma of fresh baked bread and other goodies filled the air. A couple of shelves of bread and a table with various baked goods from muffins and croissants to Almond horseshoes and pastries. I love pretzels (and they make a couple of styles) and most of the ones I see at the mall are either hard and dried, out or greasy and buttery. These pretzels on the other hand were fresh and baked with just enough sea salt to give it a little bit of flavor. This also seems to be the local spot for coffee. In the back they sold a number of German goodies, which added to the authenticity of the place.

I think they're going for that dark seductive ambiance vibe or I could be way off! After browsing the various collections of cakes (cakes the size you could put your whole face on!) we decided on ye good ole Kurtosh - cinnamon of course although the coconut was a good contender. $7.50 for one and made fresh to order which only took about 5 minutes which we happily sat around to wait for. The interior is an industrial style with exposed brick and dim lighting. As you walk in the cakes and pastries selection is on the left and straight ahead is their coffee station with a massive coffee machine! Down the back to the left is a large communal table for bigger groups etc. Will have to pop by again, as they have cute cups they serve their tea/coffee in and also to try their cookies and cream cake i spied earlier.

I however find the cakes to be pretty meh. They taste below average. I have had better and I have seen better. The tiramisu I had was ok though. Aldi and Coles tiramisu is better though. The service is ok, girls behind counter are rather slow and not very friendly. The barista is amazing. She was alone and she made about 20 coffees in 6 minutes. I was impressed.. Don't think ill be back though..

They make perfect presents and are devilishly delicious to boot. For the rest of the year you can go to Bertrand's for your cake or macaroon fix. In fact everything he bakes is scrumptious - so much so that I often have to stride purposefully past in case I get lured inside by the promise of a cupcake or one of those mouthwatering macaroons. My only wish for this cafe is a makeover! I would love to see the place redesigned to make MUCH better use of the space and create a pleasant place to actually sit in and enjoy your coffee and cake. It's a crying shame, considering all the competition for cafes in the area, that Bertrand's just doesn't cut it in this regard. Because as far as the cakes (and those gingerbread Christmas trees!) are concerned, Bertrand's is the best.

It's a Custard Pie with Phyllo and ground cinnamon :D. She warmed it up for me and no joke it was like time froze when i was eating it haha.. im a custard connoisseur and it tasted Amazing :)!! Another thing that struck my fancy was a custard croissant they had surprisingly with no almonds sprinkled on top of it haha.. that's the standard these days for some reason. Almonds aren't kind to me so that was obe pastry i haven't had in ages so i scoffed that down to .. so good aswell :D!! They got heaps more of greek pastrys and cookies :), I asked if they do coffee which they inclined but they said only strong Greek coffee in those "Copper Coffee Pot" :). So if you can't handle strong coffee you can always get your flat white, Soy latte etc across or down the road :) Its open till late daily and is a local favourite since the old days :)! The ladies behind the counter were patient with our indecision and unfamiliarity with Greek sweets, but efficient when we finally made our decisions. As tempting as the Mars bar mousse cake and caramel ricotta cake looked, I had to go for the traditional Greek sweets - it is the Hellenic Bakery after all! The galaktoboureko was oh-so-smooth and their lady fingers had the right balance of bitter nuts to syrup. I'll have to return to try the rest.
