The camping area seems quite adequate as is the playground and lake beach. I took the short hike through the Butterflies and Blooms Trail. There was lots of wildlife to see. I'd have liked to go on the White Oak Trail but the kiddos were not cooperating. Next time, I guess.

It was supposed to be a quiet vacation here for a couple of days but the secret got out and the entire city showed up to spot the most famous musicians. In remembrance of the events, the city created "Beatles Park" here and renamed the street to "Abbey Road" and there are cutouts and posters and sculptures and murals that commemorate the event. It's a quick, cheesy and campy stop and if you're anywhere near Walnut Ridge - look at a map, there's nothing near Walnut Ridge - you should stop in and check it out. The town of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas takes a brief Beatles moment that happened in that area very…read moreseriously, and probably for the right reasons. The Beatles stood on Arkansas soil for a brief moment (and that was the only time) during the height of American Beatlemania. The park is very interesting and cool, definitely a must for Beatle fans. Surprisingly, not a lot of them know this park exists. Historical markers talk about the event, as well as local rock and roll moments.

The park consists of a restored county court house from circa 1888, an old jail, and a couple of…read moremore restored buildings from that time period. It is operated by the Arkansas State Parks system. The visitor center is inside the court house. The staff on duty were very knowledgeable and answered all my questions in detail. The small town of Powhatan once served as one of the county seats of Lawrence County. The court house and county offices here were abandoned in 1963 when the county seats and court houses were consolidated and moved to Walnut Ridge. The structures fell into disrepair following this move. Limited restoration efforts were initially undertaken in the 1970's. Once the State took over, additional restorations followed. The small town has a population of only around 50 people. It's a small park, interesting to see the buildings and displays if you're passing through the area, but there really isn't enough here to justify driving more than a couple hours at the most to get here.

Located along the main street as it passes through Hardy (instead of taking the 412 bypass),t his…read moremarker points out some of the earliest settlement in the area. It stands in front of a stone building. The marker reads, "The first court house in Sharp County was erected at Evening Shade in 1868. About 1890 another court house was built at Hardy in the northern end of the county and since then the county has maintained two seats of justice." It was erected in 1936 by the Arkansas History Commission and the Arkansas Centennial Commission. It is marker F-21. Sharp County was formed in 1868 and was named for Ephraim Sharp, a state legislator from the area. And this marker points out a part of that history. It reads, "Near this place, on February 8, 1864, Union and Confederate forces engaged in a 12 mile running battle that ranged from the old Morgan's Mill on Spring River up and across Martin's Creek along the old Indian trail that ran from Memphis to Springfield. The Federals, consisting of the 11th Missouri Cavalry; 4th Arkansas Mounted Infantry, and 1st Nebraska Cavalry under the command of Col. Robert R. Livingston, crossed the Spring River and engaged the Confederate forces Freeman's Regiment, Missouri Cavalry under the command of Col. Thomas R. Freeman. The junior officers in charge of the engagement were Capt. M.H. Wolfe of Fristoe's Regiment, Missouri Cavalry, Capt. Joseph B. Love and Capt. Mau V. Shaver's cavalry regiments under Col. Freeman's Command who led most of the charges against Colonel John W. Stephens of the 11th Missouri Cavalry, 1st Nebraska Cavalry under the command of Captain T.J. Majors as well as eight men from the 4th Arkansas Mounted Infantry." Continuing, "Confederate forces out numbered the Federals and gained the advantage on the Baker Farm and ran the Federal Forces back where Hardy is today. This was a clear Confederate victory. Casualties: U.S. 6 killed, 8 wounded, and C.S. 22 killed with several wounded." There's ample parking at this facility. Also, the retail hours of operation here are fairly decent for such a small community. I recommend doing business here.
