The library itself is set up nicely and has several comfortable areas to set up a laptop and knock out paperwork. Or, if I don't feel like taking in my laptop there are plenty of open library computers to use. The biggest thing I appreciate is that this place is clean. We are visiting Bowling Green for just two days and already feel the reach and importance of the public library. Saturday morning we were at the SoKY IceRink seasonally opened at the Farmers Market. Your library card will earn you a $2 discount. Story hour sponsored by the library is also offered at the IceRink twice a week. Saturday evening we celebrated the Winter Solstice at the Capitol Arts Center at the 2nd Annual Music for the Solstice: a Celtic Celebration. This impressive concert with poetry readings and vocalist sprinkled in was sponsored by the Warren County Public Library. Thanks! I can only imagine what else this library offers the community. Today's front page newspaper headline was about the Main Library Renovation plans. Sounds like even better things are in store for that place with a lot of great books.

Wow! The Willard Library is Indiana's OLDEST library, and it's everything it lives up to be for an…read moreold, creaky library. It's quiet and filled with ghost stories of the old Grey Lady. There are even ghost cams in the library that can be viewed online 24/7. We only knew about these stories after we visited, but it's a big part of the Willard Library story. It's a gorgeous 19th-century building that is on the national registry of historic places. The woodwork and staircase are detailed, and if you are into history and architecture, you'll enjoy a visit here. The 2nd level is devoted entirely to genealogy. Willard was a well-known abolitionist and his collection of anti-slavery books are featured in a bookcase on the stairwell.

Stone steps lead up to the main entrance; there is one around the back as well with a wheelchair ramp. Book drops in the back and front- if you enter through the back, you get to see what events are going on in the various libraries (and grab a copy of the LEO and Audience, if you're into it) while the front treats you to the books of the month as well as what the Crescent Hill Book Club is reading. The librarians are very nice and quite helpful- they are always willing to take the time to explain how to properly use the copier and print things out, as well as hand over whatever knowledge is available about google, gmail, and various word processing programs. There is a reading room on the main floor in the periodicals section. Sometimes the odd person thinks it's OK to take a phone call in there, but it isn't. You get the stink-eye, you get spoken to, and you get unpopular, fast. It's also tempting to photograph articles in the current magazines for later reading/use. The librarians don't mind actually- but they do want you to read what you take. There is also a reading room downstairs amidst books on tape/CD, but they are quick to recommend Libby. The library seems to have a great collection of cookbooks, decent adult fiction selection, skimpy poetry, good history section. The children's area looks fun- there is a castle and a children's librarian that sits in there. One note- for a Louisville library, the horses/horse care area is a bit lacking.

Another thing I love about the Huntingburg Public Library is all of the programs it offers to kids in the community! Back in the day libraries were a place you were told to be quiet and respectful of others. The staff here must be incapable of using their inside voices. They talk at loud levels amongst each other, to patrons and when on the phone.
