Both of my parents who lived near Smithsburg, prepaid their funeral through this business. I am sure my parents thought highly of them however, I was far from impressed. When my widowed mother passed this year we had to deal with this business in order to coordinate seeing her one last time, picking up her ashes, picking up the death certificates and purchasing memorial cards and guest book. Upon our first meeting, the director was pleasant and comforting, however from that day and including all other meetings he was dressed very casually in jeans and casual shirts and seemed very unprofessional, it honestly made me feel that they did not take their job seriously or with any respect to the deceased. We were told that day that my mother's ashes as well as the death certificates would be ready on Monday. As my sister and I lived 2-4 hours away respectively, we made plans to come back Wednesday thinking that was plenty of extra time. However, when we came back Wednesday around 10am and tried to contact them to pick up Mom's ashes we kept getting the answering service. I kept leaving messages until about 4pm when the answering service could tell how upset I was she proceeded to call about 4 people until she reached someone who told me someone would call me back. They called me in about 10 minutes with a ton of excuses of how shorthanded they were due to someone being sick and so many services to perform but that I could now come to pick up Mom's ashes but that they hadn't had time to get the death certificates which also did not go over well with me as my sister and I had made plans to take care of those duties that needed to be done only with a death certificate and now those couldn't be done this week.(I'd also like to mention that before this I had also tried reaching them by email to get questions answered, none of my emails were returned).
I felt like no one from this business cared about the family of my Mom who put her trust with these people to carry out one of the most personal things. They showed no professionalism, no caring. I felt that because Mom prepaid, they had gotten their money and no longer had to do anything else. They didn't even have to provide a meeting place or perform a service because we opted to hold everything at Mom's church because honestly this place is so dated and decorated so shabbily that it was dark and depressing with it's wood paneling and 1960s vibe.
All they had to do to make me happy would have been to answer my emails and communicate that there were issues, provide us with Mom's ashes and death certificates when they said they would and dress more appropriately. Have some respect for the deceased and their family. I don't care if you're shorthanded or if someone is sick, that is not my problem. My problem is I just lost one of the most important people in my life and I don't want your excuses. You made things so much worse for my family. Hire more people or have a contingency plan. I don't live in Maryland but if I did I certainly wouldn't choose this place to handle my or any of my loved ones remains. read more
