I generally prefer to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt when I see mixed reviews, but unfortunately Davis Noodle City did not do it for me. I saw the recent reviews with higher ratings and decided to try it out, but alas. This is probably the most disappointing review I've had to write in a very long time, especially when I don't eat subpar food. The first impressions of the restaurant were its stark interior. Don't get me wrong, I've had plenty of good food in spartan places, but the vibes were off here. When my husband and I arrived to try it out, it was a Sunday afternoon, but there was only a dad and daughter dining in, and they were working on her SAT prep. The AC was cold at least. The lady running the restaurant had an AirPod in her ear, and she told us to sit anywhere, so we found a spot in the corner. The seating was awkward, albeit mostly comfortable. The menus are underneath the glass covering the table, and everything was so cheap. We decided to share an appetizer, the shrimp and chicken chili oil wontons. For my entree, I went with the five spice beef noodle soup, and my husband went with the chef's noodle salad. For whatever reason, the lady was super pushy about us trying the "Marco Polo" dish, which in Chinese characters next to it literally said Ja Jiang Mian. I don't know why they decided to call it "Marco Polo" but fine, whatever. Our entrees arrived before our appetizer, which was a little off-putting. When our appetizer did arrive, it was not the characteristic chili oil wontons I was used to having. In fact, the wontons arrived in some sort of peanut sauce, and the lady handed us chili oil on the side for us to apply to the wontons (see photo). Like in what universe does that happen? In all the chili oil wonton dishes I've had, the chili oil was already coated onto the dumplings. In addition, it didn't seem like the wontons were made in house. It was all very strange to me. My husband's chef salad was very refreshing, and the noodles were bouncy. He said that all the ingredients were fresh and the dish came together well. My braised beef noodle soup was decent. The broth was one-dimensional, but the braised beef was really tender. However, my main gripe was--who puts broccoli and carrots in braised beef noodle soup?! Portion sizes were huge for the price, and we both had leftovers to take home. It's honestly probably one of the only reasons why this place is open, since the dishes are super cheap and there's enough food for a second meal. I'm only giving this place 3 stars because the beef was tender and my husband's noodle salad was good, and because of the prices. However, Davis Noodle City falls super flat, coming from someone who has had amazing beef noodle soup. I wish Davis Noodle City the best with their future endeavors, but will most likely not return, unless I'm strapped for cash and want hella food that I can split between two meals. PS: the lady again told us to try the "Marco Polo" noodles as we were checking out. It's literally Ja Jiang Mian, stop calling them "Marco Polo" noodles. It really rubbed me the wrong way, especially as I can read enough Chinese to understand what was written on the menu.

Casual dining, small mom and pop place, nothing fancy but delicious food with vegan options. Service is good. The server was quick to check on us when we sat down to ensure that she's available. Should we have any questions. Once we got our food, she checked to see how we enjoyed it. She's not being personable, but she's efficient and I appreciated the level of service.

I tried to find this place a few times and it's really tucked in haha. Service was really quick and efficient. I couldn't decide what to get! Everything sounded so good! The Dan Dan noodles were delicious. We also got the veggie dumplings and they were so fresh. It's a cute little restaurant tucked in the back of a multipurpose area. Highly recommend.

Davis Noodle City was a STAPLE for me when I went to Davis as a broke college student. It's a small restaurant hidden inside a plaza. I always experience quick service and good and affordable food. Food is really affordable and portions are great! I feel like I always take home leftovers. That being said, my opinion hasn't changed since college! I went to visit after not coming for a few years since graduating. My partner and I got our usual dishes: sichuan eggplant with noodles, garlic hot chicken with noodles, and Dan Dan noodles. Everything still tastes how it did when I last had it. I will say, service here isn't the most amazing there is. The server at the counter looks to be distracted. However, they will still come around to refill water and will come around to you when called! I love Davis Noodle City. So simple, good and now so nostalgic for me.

Dan Dan Noodles, Pork Hot Oil Wontons, Thai Tea

Popped in for a quick meal and it was a nice little spot. Tables were clean and service was super fast. Thai tea was okay but not really strong and flavorful. I was expecting some spice due to the name, but the pork hot oil wontons did not seem to have any hot oil or chili oil, just the same thin peanut butter sauce as the dan dan noodles. The wontons also fell apart easily but were at least pretty plump with meat filling. Dan dan noodles were a big portion and tasted okay.

I wanted to love this place... I ordered the orange chicken and noodles... and a side of spring rolls. Overall the veggies were the winner of all the dishes. They were lightly cooked so they still had a crunch to them, but the noodles were boring no flavor... and the orange chicken didn't have much orange flavor at all. We had this as take out so I won't comment too much on the texture of the chicken, I think it was soggy because of the container. Overall if I were to return it would be to try something completely different. The service was great, the woman behind the counter was very kind! Probably the best part of the whole experience!

    Chef's Noodle Salad上海凉面

Chef's noodle salad (+ shrimp) was BOMB!!! Super good sauce and amazing portions. If you like peanut noodles this is the one for you! Service was amazing too. My only critique would be, a little more shrimp would've been nice. Came close to closing and food was served within 5min of ordering. When i finished, there was still alot of sauce left and the waitress kindly accepted my request to give me some extra noodles to clean up the sauce! Great ambiance too!!!

Hidden in a corner, home cooked style. I attended UC Davis over a decade ago and glad to see that this spot is still open and located in the little area behind Sophia's Thai Kitchen. It's a small hole in the hole in the wall that has quick authentic home styled cooking. Me and my parents came upon closing on a Saturday night and we got parking right on the Main Street. We got seated right away and we ordered some thai iced coffee and the beef noodle soup and the eggplant and white rice. It was pretty good, service was quick and pretty cheap!

    Pork Wonton noodle soup

Dined here recently with some friends and ordered the following: Pork wonton noodle soup - This was not served with the traditional egg noodles you'd expect. The wontons were more like dumplings. The broth wasn't bad with a strong white pepper taste. It was served with a few carrot shavings and broccoli florets. Chicken fried rice - It had good flavor but there was not a lot of chicken in the dish. Pork potstickers - These came out freshly fried with a traditional pork filling and a slight hint of ginger. Great dish! Vegetable dumplings - Very good and contained a silky filling! Dan dan noodles - There was an abundance of noodles in this dish. Don't forget to mix it first as there's a sauce at the bottom. This was actually pretty tasty! Five spice beef noodle soup - This dish had very good flavor and there was a generous amount of beef and noodles. The beef was very tender and tore apart easily. I've never had it with broccoli. It's usually served with bok choy but I do love broccoli so I didn't mind. There were also a few carrot shavings in the bowl. Thai iced tea - Tasted very watered down. I would not order this again. Located on E street but in an area behind the Dumpling House. The prices here are very reasonable providing a good value! The service was OK..it was more matter of fact vs being friendly and welcoming. I would come back and order the beef noodles soup again, fried rice, but would like to try a few other dishes like their hot oil wontons and pork chop noodle soup.

We were both pretty hungry afterwards and weren't sure what places were open, or what we wanted to eat. We decided to drive around downtown Davis just to get a sense of what was open, and saw that Tasty Kitchen was bustling. We had never eaten there before, but as it was pretty much our only option besides fast food (which I did not want), we decided to try them out and have a good Thanksgiving dinner. I took a quick browse at their Yelp reviews before heading in, and the food looked pretty good, so I figured why not. Since we had come pretty much on a whim (I usually heavily research restaurants before trying new places), we weren't quite sure what to order, but I knew I wanted some carbs. We wanted to share a fried rice, so we chose the dried scallop and egg white fried rice. My husband was eyeing the beef stew lo mein, and I was eager to try the beef chow fun with black bean sauce. We were seated quickly and given hot tea to enjoy. It had been a cold day, so the tea was very welcome. We placed our order and then sat back to people watch while we waited. There were a few large groups dining in, but while watching the staff, they all worked efficiently, and food was constantly coming out of the kitchen. Delivery drivers and those who called in for takeout were also coming and going. We waited a while for our food, but it was also because everyone seemed to have ordered at the same time for the dinner rush (and we had come around 17:45 too). I guess everyone was feeling like an early Thanksgiving dinner. We were honestly amazed by the huge portion sizes when our dishes arrived to our table. Everything was reasonably priced as well, and we knew we would have plenty of leftovers. The beef chow fun with black bean sauce was delightfully saucy, and the noodles still had a nice wok hay. The beef was extremely velvety and tender. My husband enjoyed his beef stew lo mein. The egg noodles were perfectly bouncy, and the braised beef was tender. The dried scallop egg white fried rice was pretty good as well. I had hoped for a bit more wok hay and scallop flavor, but it was a little under seasoned. I would say it was a nice palette cleanser if you will, and at least the rice was nice and fluffy. I would have to say that the food here is comforting and hearty, but it didn't have as much depth of flavor as I would have liked. However, you really get your money's worth when you come here. It was $49 for everything before tip, and we had so many leftovers to take home. Our waiter even took our plates and packaged them to go for us, so that was a nice touch. I'm used to packaging my own leftovers these days. There's something for everyone at this restaurant, and I would like to be back to try some of their other dishes. Another table across from us ordered the Mongolian beef, which came on a sizzling platter, and that smelled so good. That will definitely be a contender next time we visit. I'm definitely thankful that Tasty Kitchen was open on Thanksgiving, and will keep this restaurant in our rotation for a holiday meal.

I also ordered the mango sticky rice, which I was excited about because I have had it at many different places. Unfortunately, the mango was not very sweet, and when I mentioned that something felt off, the response I got made me feel a bit dismissed, like I did not understand the dish. That part of the experience was frustrating. In general, the service was not the kindest during that visit, which affected my overall impression. That being said, the food itself has good flavor, and ordering to go might be a better option if you want to avoid that kind of interaction.
