I wasn't prepared for the chilly day in Davis. I changed my outfit several times before we left the house. The weather report said 65 degrees and overcast today. I went from a thin top to a medium weight sweater. We arrived in Davis I grabbed my jacket to pair with my sweater. Today was a day spent exploring Davis to see the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts (CCACA). What a great Conference. We come each year for this Conference and explore Davis every time we are here. After exploring the first building of the show it was coming on time to eat. We looked around the current shopping center and my husband didn't see anything he was craving. He said we'll go more into town and look for a noodle place. He said he remembered one from our last visit, down one of the alleys. Walking up the street we saw a couple of advertisements. A sandwich board was on the sidewalk for Davis Noodle CIty, the exact place we were looking for. The little Noodle Shop in the alley. We weaved through the other businesses, past the dumpling restaurant, past the outdoor seating and to the front door of the Davis Noodle City Restaurant. The out door seating looked really welcoming, but it was chilly out so we opted for eating inside with the other table that was occupied. There were 3 parties eating outside when we arrived. When we walked inside we were greeted and told to take any table. We choose a table in the corner. The menus were under the glass table top, keeping it clean and easy to read. Each place setting had its own copy of the menu. After looking at the menu, remembering what was offered on the sandwich board in front, and cross referencing it with Yelp Reviews we started ordering. We opted for the Five Spice Beef Noodles, and I asked if that was a good option and she said it was their top seller. The Yelp Reviews were only ok for that dish, but I took our chances. The second dish we ordered was the Dan Dan Noodles She tried to upscale us to the one with vegetables, but that dish was a cold dish so we when for the standard Dan Dan Noodles. Both dishes came out quickly. The Dan Dan noodles were not spicy as I anticipated, which was good, I wasn't really looking for spicy. I liked the flavor and realized that if you mixed it up there is a sauce on the bottom that is really tasty. Dan Dan Noodles ($8.25 a steal) is a solid dish and I highly reccomend it. It's a great bowlful of noodles. If you are hopping for other ingredients you are out of luck, it's 100% noodles with a sprinkling of peanuts on top and a sauce on the bottom. The Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup ($12.75)was as described in the reviews. It comes with American Broccoli and carrots. The beef is so good it melts in your mouth. The broth is minimal and lacked flavor. I'd think that it's advertised as Five Spice that it would have more flavor. I don't reccomend it if you are looking for a strong flavor. If you are looking for great meat, that melts in your mouth, but is also a little fatty then you have the perfect dish. Both dishes came with fresh noodles, none of those dried and rehydrated noodles that some places serve. The noodles on both dishes were different and pleasant. I highly reccomend their fresh noodles. Customer service was good. She came to check up on us and was pleasant. Parking is street parking. And they have a bathroom on site that is clean and well stocked. read more

I am usually a defender of these kinds of restaurants --- slightly below average rating due to poor service is the mindset I try to approach them with. Unfortunately, this place has both bad service and food is not great. 2 stars for the price. Food (3/10) - I don't know how to describe it outside of the fact that it's just bland. I got the "Marco Polo noodles" which is just Chinese jia jiang mien. Let's start with the positives. I liked the noodle texture; it had a nice spring and were thick for a decent chew. Now, onto the bad. You could just tell that the noodles would be bland just by a look and smell. The smell of the bowl wasn't one of fragrant stir-fried pork but it actually smelled like starchy water. The sauce was super watery and had no flavor and I don't think there was even ground pork in the noodles. From what I could tell, it was some diced up mushroom and then black bean paste, without black bean flavor might I add. I had to add a GENEROUS amount of soy sauce and chili oil to make it taste decent. Honestly, I'd say it's pretty hard to mess up this dish as a whole and there's a lot of leeway on flavor but I have not tasted something that bland in a while. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have the thai tea. This thing was so sweet that it was borderline undrinkable. I had to wait for the ice to melt in the drink before it was bearable and even then, it still left this residual sticky taste in my mouth. Also it's 4 dollars for canned thai tea; she grabbed it out the fridge. The only sort of saving grace of this restaurant is that it's relatively cheap. $12.50 for a good portion of noodles might convince me to go back(?) VERY BIG maybe though. I might want to try their soup noodles. Service (5/10) - It didn't really seem like she wanted me to be there. She kind of just sat behind the counter on her phone with an Airpod in the whole time. She was just on her phone the whole time and overall inattentive. When she was, she was just asking if I was ready to order (twice in the span of under 3-ish minutes). Ambiance (6/10) - Eh. It was just kinda weird. The lighting was dingy. Also didn't like how they left dirty tables around (clearly looked like they had been there for a while). Overall, probably wouldn't visit again. Might give it a second chance but food for price was pretty good. Unfortunately, bad food for good price is a no-go for me. read more

This little no frills gem is tucked in the back, but I can't believe the rating isn't higher for this place. Consistently tasty food. I'm a huge fan of the chicken mustard green soup (which is good as vegan too) and dumplings are bomb. But the "coop-de-gracie" thick noodles including the ones in the soups are the perfect blend of the size of a big udon noodle but more "meaty" like a pasta noodle. Final detail, often overlooked, the soup comes out scaldingly hot. I like a soup to come to table that opens your facial pores, forces you to come to grips with your self discipline of patience versus a blanched tongue. So yes I think the food is solid. read more

I generally prefer to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt when I see mixed reviews, but unfortunately Davis Noodle City did not do it for me. I saw the recent reviews with higher ratings and decided to try it out, but alas. This is probably the most disappointing review I've had to write in a very long time, especially when I don't eat subpar food. The first impressions of the restaurant were its stark interior. Don't get me wrong, I've had plenty of good food in spartan places, but the vibes were off here. When my husband and I arrived to try it out, it was a Sunday afternoon, but there was only a dad and daughter dining in, and they were working on her SAT prep. The AC was cold at least. The lady running the restaurant had an AirPod in her ear, and she told us to sit anywhere, so we found a spot in the corner. The seating was awkward, albeit mostly comfortable. The menus are underneath the glass covering the table, and everything was so cheap. We decided to share an appetizer, the shrimp and chicken chili oil wontons. For my entree, I went with the five spice beef noodle soup, and my husband went with the chef's noodle salad. For whatever reason, the lady was super pushy about us trying the "Marco Polo" dish, which in Chinese characters next to it literally said Ja Jiang Mian. I don't know why they decided to call it "Marco Polo" but fine, whatever. Our entrees arrived before our appetizer, which was a little off-putting. When our appetizer did arrive, it was not the characteristic chili oil wontons I was used to having. In fact, the wontons arrived in some sort of peanut sauce, and the lady handed us chili oil on the side for us to apply to the wontons (see photo). Like in what universe does that happen? In all the chili oil wonton dishes I've had, the chili oil was already coated onto the dumplings. In addition, it didn't seem like the wontons were made in house. It was all very strange to me. My husband's chef salad was very refreshing, and the noodles were bouncy. He said that all the ingredients were fresh and the dish came together well. My braised beef noodle soup was decent. The broth was one-dimensional, but the braised beef was really tender. However, my main gripe was--who puts broccoli and carrots in braised beef noodle soup?! Portion sizes were huge for the price, and we both had leftovers to take home. It's honestly probably one of the only reasons why this place is open, since the dishes are super cheap and there's enough food for a second meal. I'm only giving this place 3 stars because the beef was tender and my husband's noodle salad was good, and because of the prices. However, Davis Noodle City falls super flat, coming from someone who has had amazing beef noodle soup. I wish Davis Noodle City the best with their future endeavors, but will most likely not return, unless I'm strapped for cash and want hella food that I can split between two meals. PS: the lady again told us to try the "Marco Polo" noodles as we were checking out. It's literally Ja Jiang Mian, stop calling them "Marco Polo" noodles. It really rubbed me the wrong way, especially as I can read enough Chinese to understand what was written on the menu. read more

Showed up with a few friends for dinner on a weeknight. The restaurant was pretty empty and I sat myself and waited for my friends to arrive. I ended up getting the black pepper beef with noodles (forgot a picture, whoops) and a thai tea. Both were excellent and the beef came in a HUGE portion. Davis Noodle City was a STAPLE for me when I went to Davis as a broke college student. It's a small restaurant hidden inside a plaza. I always experience quick service and good and affordable food. Food is really affordable and portions are great! I feel like I always take home leftovers. That being said, my opinion hasn't changed since college! I went to visit after not coming for a few years since graduating. My partner and I got our usual dishes: sichuan eggplant with noodles, garlic hot chicken with noodles, and Dan Dan noodles. Everything still tastes how it did when I last had it. I will say, service here isn't the most amazing there is. The server at the counter looks to be distracted. Popped in for a quick meal and it was a nice little spot. Tables were clean and service was super fast. Thai tea was okay but not really strong and flavorful. I was expecting some spice due to the name, but the pork hot oil wontons did not seem to have any hot oil or chili oil, just the same thin peanut butter sauce as the dan dan noodles. When i lived in Davis, this was the place that i went to for a homey meal. The place is tucked into a corner behind the hot dogger. It is fairly small and a bit dated, but they serve amazing food. My favorite are the taiwan style porkchops with noodes. the Porkchops are breaded and fried, served with a helping of veggies and what i believe is 5 spice ground pork. Almost 15 years after i left Davis, i keep making stops here, when i am nearby. Highly recommend for someone that wants a no frills meal. read more

This small restaurant is simply amazing! We have eaten Chinese food once or thrice a month on three continents all our lives, so we know good Chinese/Taiwanese food when we smell, taste and eat it! Dined here recently with some friends and ordered the following: Pork wonton noodle soup - This was not served with the traditional egg noodles you'd expect. The wontons were more like dumplings. The broth wasn't bad with a strong white pepper taste. It was served with a few carrot shavings and broccoli florets. Chicken fried rice - It had good flavor but there was not a lot of chicken in the dish. Pork potstickers - These came out freshly fried with a traditional pork filling and a slight hint of ginger. Great dish! Vegetable dumplings - Very good and contained a silky filling! Dan dan noodles - There was an abundance of noodles in this dish. Don't forget to mix it first as there's a sauce at the bottom. This was actually pretty tasty! Five spice beef noodle soup - This dish had very good flavor and there was a generous amount of beef and noodles. The beef was very tender and tore apart easily. I've never had it with broccoli. It's usually served with bok choy but I do love broccoli so I didn't mind. There were also a few carrot shavings in the bowl. Thai iced tea - Tasted very watered down. I would not order this again. We go to Davis Noodle City at least twice a month. We've tried several different dishes and they've all been good. Our current favorites are the black pepper beef and potstickers. The noodles are thick and chewy and do a good job absorbing whatever sauce is put on them. Service is fast and friendly. We can't wait to go back and keep working our way through the menu! read more

My boyfriend and I ate at Noodle City for the first time on Saturday. We were lucky enough to find street parking nearby. It's a small little place, but it was clean and the waitress was attentive. We ordered pork potstickers, wontons in chili oil, and Sichuan eggplant rice. The pork potstickers were perfectly crisp outside and steamy inside and the dipping sauce was well balanced. The wontons in chili oil were decent enough, but the sauce was peanut buttery and did not taste like chili oil at all... which was strange. It tasted fine overall but I don't think the description is accurate. So, don't order this if you have a peanut allergy lol. Also strange that the wontons were falling apart. The Sichuan eggplant was delicious - a little spicy and garlicky. Eggplant to rice ratio seemed off though. Overall, decent spot, not as good as Dumpling House, but it satisfied our craving since DH is closed. We were the only table in here and they had one online order, and yet we still had to wait for our water to come. Service was very slow even though no one is here. The food is absolutely terrible I have to say. The sichuan chicken sauce was made with sweet and sour sauce! They need to change that on the menu if they are going to use a different sauce. Update to my previous 3-star rating. I gave this place a 3-star, but I continue to come back for the housemade noodles. My last time, I tried the vegetable dumplings which were a little one note and one texture, but as a promised in my first review, I was told potstickers were an option and I'd update once I tried those. Thus the 5-star! Potstickers. Order contains a generous 8 (Grade A+) These dumplings were one of the best things I've eaten in Davis. The housemade wrap provides that gooey top, but the perfectly pan fried bottom gives it the texture that was missing from the dumplings. This is the only change to bring this dish to a 3-star to an overwhelming 5-star. If they put egg inside, I would give it a 6-star (hint!) but for now, this dish will continue to bring me in for either sit down or a take out snack. The dipping sauce isn't spicy and is a tasty compliment for each bite. Sorry, I can't remember the exact amount, but there is an additional fee to "upgrade" to potstickers. I think it was $1.35, but for 8 potstickers, that is not unreasonable. read more

We were planning to have dinner at Dumpling House next door but it was packed and the staff was pretty rude about making us wait outside in the cold until our table was ready. We decided to go over to Noodle City instead since my friend heard good things about it and there were open seats there. The menu is pretty standard for a Chinese restaurant with your rice and noodle plates but the kimchi beef noodle soup stood out to me, so I ordered that. It was perfect for the cold winter weather and they put a ton of kimchi! The broth itself was just like a kimchi stew and tasted really good. We also ordered the pork and veggie hot chili oil wontons but when it came out it was covered in a peanut sauce, not hot chili oil. Not sure if they heard our order wrong or if this was just their style of hot chili oil?! It was good when you dipped it in sriracha but otherwise just mediocre flavor. I was super excited to eat here as they had curry noodles (which I'm not sure if they are known for) but I was craving it so I stumbled upon this place on yelp. It looked like it had great reviews and I was missing so authentic Chinese food. Which I did not get. Perhaps it was because it was late in the night but I felt that their food was utterly Americanized, NOT that's bad but I was hoping for CHINESE cuisine. Not Panda Express. The only thing that resembled something I was used to was their green onion pancake. It was small but still as good as ever. I had ordered their curry noodles and it was a little bit more... sad. The noodles were fine but the curry seemed to have no taste. It seemed as if they had run out of curry and so they took what they had left at the bottom on the pot and added water to it with potatoes. I am a HUGE fan of fried tofu and UCD's dining common doesn't exactly fulfill my desires, so when I went there, I of course ordered the fried tofu. It was better than the dining commons (which is not a huge hurdle to overcome). It was crunchy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. But seemingly like a reoccurring issue that happens at this restaurant is that it had no flavor. It tasted like texture. Thank god there was soy sauce or else it would've been the same as eating ice, flavorless. My friend's house chow mein was sad. The noodles were the same noodles as mine, it was like, fried or anything. Just noodles with probably what leftover meats and veggies that had left. She found a shrimp or two in there lying about amongst the forest of bean sprouts and pork. Another friend had ordered the soup noodle (not sure which one) and then she apologized to me, saying that she's sorry but she's not going to pack it because it tasted like nothing. The flavor here is lacking. I'm not sure if this was just my experience or if they were tired, but I was dissatisfied when I left. I even paid for our bill because I felt so bad dragging my friends and hyping it up when it turned out to be such a disappointment. (A longer description of the actual restaurant) so I went in at around 7:15 ish and there weren't many people about. I walked in with my friends and the waitress asked how many people. I counted five and told her just that. She gestured towards a table and we all sat around. The inside has a nice cozy kinda feel, slightly smaller than what I'm used to, probably could seat around 30-40 people. There are booths and tables and chairs all made of wood. The menus were pretty simple with the front for English and the back for Chinese. The people who work there speak mandarin which was unfortunate because my mandarin sucks and I could impress them with my language skills. It's essentially your typical restaurant with people serving you water and food. Nothing out of the ordinary. If you want to eat with chopsticks instead of a fork you could always ask (but who are we kidding?) or on the counter where there is like bar seating, the right side has wooden chopsticks you could grab at. That's all folks! I hope this doesn't deter you from going, they are nice people with bland tastebuds. read more

I am very very disappointed in this place. The food is just average. Not terrible but nothing that really stands out. The noodles itself is good but most of the noodle dishes are lacking. I got the hot garlic noodles which was missing a strong garlic taste, and didn't have much spice either. The spring rolls taste like frozen PF Chang's spring rolls, so I wouldn't recommend em. The only thing saving the rating for me is how cheap it is for lunch. If you just want noodles dining out on a budget maybe this is the spot for you. We went to this place as Yelp suggested this as a Taiwanese place. The food is neither authentic Taiwanese nor chinese. All the food items are very sweet. We ordered hot garlic chicken, dandan noodles and shrimp chive cakes. Dandan noodles was okayish at best. The service was good. The woman who was attending our table was very patient and informed us which dished would be spicy and which would be sweet. We were really surprised when she said wontons in hot chilli oil will be sweet and we should avoid it if we like spicy dish. I have tried wonton in chilli oil in at least 4-5 other sichuan restaurants and nowhere it was sweet!! Unfortunately hot garlic chicken was super-sweet (a notch lower than orange chicken) even though she said it would be mostly spicy and very little sweet. It's not bad, but it's not great either. Food is cheap-ish for Davis, and I'm glad I got to try another Davis spot, but I wouldn't go again. Don't get the buns, they taste like microwaveable Costco pork buns read more
