TLDR: I've had the opportunity to train at several Krav Maga schools in New Jersey and Texas, and…read morenone can compare to Englewood Krav Maga. This is absolutely the best Krav Maga school in the state, by an extremely wide margin! At EKM, the curriculum is both comprehensive and cumulative, building on the basics with practical techniques that are designed for real-world street defense applications. The modern facility is always immaculate, spacious, and well lit. It is equipped with everything required to train in this art. There is a full schedule of classes, so students can get plenty of reps in each week. What sets Englewood Krav Maga apart from any other school I've ever experienced are the teachers. Mr. Juan Berrios, the head instructor, is a very passionate and refreshingly direct coach with a keen eye for detail. He sets expectations and standards at a very high level, and we students strive to meet it. The school's culture is one of traditional formality and strict etiquette. Under his guidance, we train very intensively, but always safely. As a teacher, Berrios pulls the best out of his students, and before long they are performing at levels they didn't know they were even capable of. There is no higher praise to give to a teacher than that! Ms. Lee teaches the kids and adult beginners, carrying on the school's legacy to each new generation of students. Over the years here, I have personally watched timid little children mature into young adults who can defend themselves quite competently. The kids learn discipline, perseverance, and how to stay calm under pressure - all valuable lessons that will improve their lives both inside and outside of the dojo. There are no shortcuts at Englewood Krav Maga. It's not a belt factory, or a place where everybody gets a participation trophy just for trying. It's not a school where students are sold a false sense of security, or allowed to pretend that we can run before we can actually crawl. There are no classes taught by low ranking "assistant instructors" here - it's Berrios' first-rate instruction, consistently, night after night. In short, it's unapologetically old-school here, and thank God for that! If a student is willing to put in the time and sweat required to learn and practice authentic Krav Maga, this place and its instructors are simply unparalleled. I am forever grateful to my teachers Juan Berrios and Ms. Lee for creating and maintaining such a stellar school for us students to train in. There is nothing like it anywhere else!

The owners, who have had the karate school in Maywood for 20+ years have an attention to detail that creates great martial arts students but they also go above and beyond to get to know all their students on a personal level, holding annual picnics, beach outings and other social gatherings. I started in 1992 and have since stopped training due to other commitments but have made countless friends here and still stop by the karate school frequently and look at the Senak's as family. I am confident that anyone, kid or adult, who trains here will feel the same way.

Maywood Karate not only instills the above attributes, but makes learning karate fun for kids and teenagers as well as adults. It also creates family bonding as well when the adults of the students join the school and train together with their children. The Senak Family develops not only self defense techniques, but young men and women to be successful in their college careers, professional and life itself. Since having my son training at the school since he was 10 years old and diagnosed with chronic asthma, the training has completely eliminated his condition and he no longer requires medication for asthma for the remainder of his life. He has reached the current rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt and is currently striving for his 3rd Degree and has obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Video Game Art from Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. To say that Maywood Karate has greatly impacted my son's development as a teenager and young man is an understatement. The core values and foundation of discipline, attention to detail and good old fashioned hard work remain with him to this day.

I tried out everyplace that offered judo in the city and wasn't happy. Almost giving up on finding the perfect dojo, I decided to pop into Kokushi Budo. It was an incredible first day and every day since has only gotten better. They were so welcoming. I was greeted by Sensei Andy who showed me the ropes and made sure I felt welcome and comfortable. He answered all of my questions and really helped me connect with the dojo. Sensei Shintaro Higashi is an unmatched Judoka in skill and finesse. He's an amazing teacher who all of us admire and can really look up to. I can honestly say that I feel safer in the streets of NYC from what I have learned from Sensei and everyone else at Kokushi. As my schedule allows, I sometimes make it early to class and wait as the kid's program finishes. Andy and Shintaro are easily the the best Sensei's I have ever seen with young people - they're outstanding role models and you can see how much they care for their students. KBI is not just a dojo, it's a family who cares about the success and well being of ALL its members. And that my friends is priceless.

She's more disciplined, more focus and self reliant, and l've received the positive feedbacks from her Pre-K teachers. Master James is a great teacher. He has a sense of humor, kind, always smiling but commands the students' attention and behavior in their presence. He in independent and manages every aspect of his dojang. So you get the more personal and direct attention from him. He is well organized, knowledgeable and runs a well structured program. He is very supportive, encouraging and motivates students to practice harder and work harder. I've seen many of his high belt students move on to competitions, winning in forms and breaking boards. I too, studied Taekwondo as a teenager. It was the best gift my single mother of three ever gave. I wanted to pass this on to my daughter. I was bullied in middle school, and I didn't find anyway out until I begged my mother to enroll me. It took 3 months of Taekwondo before I stood up to my bully, and he never bothered me after that. I went on to get my black belt, but had to withdraw due to college and work schedule. I carried on the teachings of Taekwondo throughout my college years and my profession. I wouldn't be where I am today, working as a professional and scuba diving around the world, if it wasn't for the teachings of Taekwondo. Let's face it, we live in world where children are cruel to other children. We are not going to be there all the time to defend our little ones and wipe away their tears when they are hurt. We have to prepare our children to manage and handle any type of bullying. Not only will they learn how to defend themselves, but they will also learn respect for others, self control, fitness, courage & honesty. I wholeheartedly recommend American Korean Taekwondo school to anyone. The class hours are so flexible and can accommodate any hectic schedule. Double thumbs up to Master James who is always readily available after school hours even when running a tight program.

I clarifed that my kid has special needs, would they still be able to acomadte us in the classes. I was told and reassured by the lady at the reception that the instructor is great and they would be able to accommodate, "it wouldn't be a problem." It didn't go well the instructor didn't have any patience. The last class we attended, the instructor sent my kid out of the class, in front of the students and parents calling her a, "trouble maker". When I spoke to the instructor about my kid, he told me that he was not aware of my kid having special needs. The lack of communication between staff members was appalling. One of the observations I made, they seem to want to prefer cookie cutter students. Those who aren't don't seem to get the same attention as the others, "it doesn't seems your child wants to be here." Was a comment made to me by the instructor. Most of the time there were 6-8 students with just one instructor. We really wanted to be able to like this dojo and be part of their team. Before moving to the area my kid did attend a different Dojo. Our experience was completely different from here. Improvements that could be made is deffinatley better communications between staff members. If there are more than five students an assistant seems logical. Having an instructor or assistant that has professional experience working with kids. This should be a must!! if there is a class for kids around five years old. Our previous Dojo offered free classes to a local kindergarten teachers assistant in exchange to come and assist in the lessons.
