This company is a scam. We applied for a commercial space more than a month ago but still haven't heard a definite answer, all they tell you are reasons after reasons until you feel so frustrated and just eventually withdraw the application. They do hard pulls on your credit worse than applying for a car loan. My sister in law who was just trying to help me pass the credit check lost her unemployment benefits from the hard pull. She's a single mom with 4 kids without a job who just tried to help me to get a commercial space for my business. They listed the space for lease without even knowing that there are termites until 3 weeks after we applied. Why would you even post a lease up when there are termites?? Do yourselves a favor and stay away from this company! What a nightmare! read more

I helped some good friends who were moving away and clean up their house rental and helped with most of the yard work before they moved out of their rental home they signed with Day Lum. It took 2 days and everything was clean and ready for the next tennant to move right on in. My friends never got their rental security deposit back even though they kept letting them know where's their $2000.00 deposit money refund over the past several years worth of waiting after they left. Sounds like a SCAM to me!!! Nobody did yardwork for them during their entire stay either. The house and yard was left in even better condition than when they initially rented it. I was told this isn't the first time they kept people's deposits without just cause. read more

I rented a house from Daylum. Cindy Starr managed it. When we moved in we were in the dark for the first night because there were no working light bulbs. Ladders were needed to put many of the bulbs in. When I called Daylum the next day they said it was our problem. We had to go out and buy a ladder to put in lightbulbs ourselves. When we moved out I took the energy efficient bulbs with me. Except for one that a helpful electrician had put in for me in the backyard using an extra long ladder. He had told me that any bulb was OK so I have him an energy efficient one. Well, when we moved out over $200 was deducted from our deposit to put in lightbulbs. We were charged $50 for the one outside. Quite a while after moving out when the house was again empty we stopped to check on the cat who belonged to the house and noticed that that outdoor light we had been charged $50 for had never been changed. There are many rental agencies in Hilo, find an ethical one. read more

They are a little disappointing. They had a beautiful home for rent on their website. I contacted them wanting to see it. They had me submit a full report before I could even see it. Once I was ready to see it, I was told several other people wanted to see it also. I went on a group viewing, and of course I didn't get the place. The other rentals they had were pretty sketchy. They told me they would call me if they found what I was looking for, but no call. Tip: they don't update their website when a house is rented or in the process, so don't fall in love with anything. Not sure if it is the same for their home sales, but be aware of the possibility. They were friendly, but I recall when I rented a home through them before, they were a bit weird when it came to returning a deposit. I got the rental in not-so-clean condition (by their standards) and when we moved out, they tried to say they wouldn't return the deposit because the screens on the windows has dirt on the outside when she ran a white wipe over it, even though they were dirty to begin with! If you rent through them, be prepared for an OCD experience before getting the deposit back. read more

This rental agency is terrible when it comes to maintenance. When things go wrong they say they contacted someone to come and no one shows. There was this not time where we asked if someone could fix the panels on the back porch because it was broken when we moved in and the lady said that it shouldn't be leaking because they are brand-new panels. When someone came to fix it they said that the panels were about10years old and whoever put them on did it wrong. Rented a 1 bdrm unit from Day Lum for 6 months and did not receive our down payment in full due to cleaning dues...they took out about $70.00 from our down payment. I wouldn't have a problem paying these dues if we left the place in a condition worse than was received but to be quite honest, the place was cleaner than when we first moved in. On day one, the place was really hairy (literally). It felt as if a barber lived here before we did. That took a lot of our time vacuuming and cleaning out the bathtub drain with pipe cleaners (spent my own money on Draino). We also got charged for a dirty AC filter which is absurd because we NEVER used the AC unit the entire time. I don't expect them to know this fact, but they should at least provide new tenants with new filters.... I just don't understand how this rental agency can dish out dirty apartments and charge the tenant for cleaning fees that they probably make up to make more money. If we knew we were going to be charged for cleaning fees after WE CLEANED IT, we would have NEVER signed with Day Lum. We have also tried to dispute the cleaning fee by calling the agency (the simplest and most logical way), but they require the claim in writing....ridiculous. In my experience, I would recommend avoiding Day Lum Rentals at all costs.... read more

I rented a studio from Day-Lum Rentals and Management when I moved back to Hawaii from the mainland. It was a great experience. I found the apartment on-line and went through the process quickly and without any problems. Kristin and the people at the office were great. There was a problem with the air conditioning and they were quick to repair the unit. We ended up moving out when we bought a home in the Hilo area. We used the Coldwell Banker agent that is associated with Day-Lum who found a great home for me and the wife. read more

I was looking for a rental and submitted an application to Day-lum -- of course, I pay 20 dollars as a non-refundable application fee. Then they quickly responded with an email asking me to pay my wife's application fee, and we pay $40 in total. After a few days, I sent another email, and I also called to ask about our process. They either not responding or transferring me to voicemail, and I never reached the "agent" that was in charge of our applications. Funny enough, after one phone-call leading to nowhere, I refreshed the day-lum website and found that the property I was applying for was taken off-market -- and there was no reply or explanation at all! Eventually, I found a decent place on Craigslist. And in terms of house-hunting, I encourage you guys to be open and patient, keep looking in a variety of ways instead of relying on some big monopolization company. read more

The worst rental company we have ever had to deal with, no one ever responds, everyone in the office is completely lost and try's to pass it off as somebody else's mistake. Had issue returning my phone calls would try and make me talk to my neighbors about certain issue that never pertained to them or the rented property. Never met the actual property manager, the last lady we spoke with couldn't even tell us how to turn in our keys or what the cleaning procedures were, we spoke to someone new every time. Day-Lum rentals has poor communication and no one know what's going on it's a joke. I hope this was just a bad experience on my part and no one else has to deal with this poorly managed company. Cindy Starr from Day-Lum properties was my property manager at my rental location. I have had a wonderful experience with her as my manager. She has always been understanding and made my problems a real concern for her. I had some unique requests that I'm sure were difficult and Cindy figured out how to accomplish them. Overall I had a great experience with Cindy as my manager and a good experience with the company itself. They have a minimum credit score requirement of 620. Yet they have that NOWHERE on their website. They still took my application fee HAPPILY requested via paypal... so this is just a heads up to anyone with less than perfect credit. Do not send them your money they will just deny it. Payed online application fee, and submitted all requirements. After speaking with Kathy she told me my credit was approved and all I needed was to submit my license to her via email. After one week of not hearing back from them I left a couple messages and they never returned my call. I ended up finding my own place without any assistance. Daylum only took my money without them rendering any services. Watch out for these useless money hungry people. You're better off on your own or a different realtor company. The only downfall is that they have monopolized Hilo. This is why they could care less about customer service. read more

Day-Lum rentals in my opinion are slum lords! They never return your calls when you need something fixed, but will call when THEY want something done. I am so glad we are done with this place! In the span of 8 months they went through 4 different property managers and we could never get a straight answer. Our move in date got pushed back 3 times and all the work that was supposed be done NEVER got done until someone got hurt from the huge whole in the cabinet door. How are you gonna hold an entire security deposit just because the ONE thing wasn't "clean enough" for your standards yet there's holes in the floors that could cause major injuries!? I don't normally write reviews, but this company extremely frustrated me. I was told I was approved for a place, but I had to come see the unit in person. I flew to Hilo from the mainland, and after I had seen a few rentals was told I wasn't approved for ANY place they had available. I rented from them and they were very difficult to deal with. They twice let someone into our apartment without proper notice; one time while my wife was sleeping. She was not happy to find a man trying to get into her bedroom! We didn't like our rental, to no fault of Day-Lum (we chose it after all). But we asked them if they could relist the place to see if someone else would sign a new lease. Not only did they refuse but they accused us of trying to illegally break our lease; which was not the case. Finally, they kept every penny they could from the damage deposit. They even charged us for the cobwebs in the roof overhang. My wife and I are both professionals, followed all of the rules, were quiet, clean, and always paid our rent on time. I have worked for Day-Lum Rentals for 4+ years and have rented from us on two separate occassions, from two different Property Managers. Having never rented from a Property Management company before, I really didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. Both times, I ended up renting really great homes. Both homes were relatively new and in great condition for very reasonable rent. There were very few times I needed to report service problems, but when I did, the repair people always responded in a timely manner. Although I no longer rent from Day-Lum, I would always recommend coming to Day-Lum. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and always willing to help. They will take forever to process your application and you will end up finding a house through CL and wasting your application fee. The employees are very unprofessional, incredibly rude, and still take your money without providing any service. I hope your experiences are different. I also heard from my colleagues and friends that they charged an unreasonably big amount for cleaning after they moved out when the tenants professionally cleaned the house at their moving out. Yes. Our family has rented from Day-Lum for 3 years. We have had an exceptional experience and would recommend this business to whomever is looking for a quality organization. I have owned rental property and it is not always easy dealing with renters. Payments are late, people leave apartments in dirty, messy and sometimes disguesting shape, that doesn't cover the deposit cost. It is always easy to critize a business, when it doesn't go your way. Having been a landlord, I have had renters who complained about everything and had unrealistic ex- pectations. Day-lum is fair with doing the walk-thru while checking in. Their paperwork is very clear and they return the deposit in less time than the required 14 days. The application process is through. They want to assure their clients they are getting renters who have a good credit history. We have always worked with Kristin. She cares about her customers and her professionalism is outstanding. What kind of a rentals/property management company is this? I was made to pay an application fee, then told I qualified for an astoundingly high rental limit. Then I had trouble getting them to schedule a day to show places. Then, when I finally did manage to schedule some showings, an office secretary showed up at the first property and told me she wasn't a realtor and couldn't answer questions about the properties. In fact, she didn't even know what the properties rented for....didn't even have fact sheets on the properties. Further amazingly, no one ever followed up... Nothing. Are these professionals? I own condos elsewhere. Who would hire such people? I wouldn't. read more

Daylum rentals management (Cyndy) has been awesome! They are quick to respond with emails and or calls. They have refunded us more than $70 for items we have spent on ant poison, water catchments, etc. They have stayed true to their word for getting the fire place up and running (which they have started today). Home has been awesome and we love the location. Highly recommend them to other potential renters (but good credit and references required) but if you have pets, be ready to pay a butt load to have them in deposit form (same cost as rent for the month). We shall see how it goes with getting rental deposit and pet deposit back but hopefully we shall be expecting most of it back. read more
