Even though it rained for almost the entire tour (and it was cold), he kept everyone engaged, laughing and in tow. Really, really knowledgeable, funny, worldly (he's given tours around the world) and dynamic, our guide clearly is proud of his adopted home and eager to share its history, stories and secrets with others. This made all the difference between seeing Gent and truly appreciating it. While it's free, tips are appreciated and well-earned. As the weekend arrived, there was higher demand and often no carriages at the main square for long. The tour gives you a good overview of old town Bruges. Tour guides are friendly & knowledgeable. Prices are reasonable. Blankets are provided to keep you warm in the cold. And, most importantly, the horses are fantastic! They don't just saunter along - they really move fast at some points! And they seem to love their jobs. All tours stop 1/2 way through (near the "lake of love") to give the horse a break & snack. I overheard that the horses work 4 days a week for 6 hours a day and then get a three day break. We took a tour our first day and then took another our last day before catching the train to Paris. Our first horse loved me - definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

If you enjoy the drinking mainly, you may wait a bit to really dive in, and if you aren't good with sours or Belgian-style ales, this likely isn't going to be your cup of tea. However, if you enjoy a variety of ales, enjoy history, are good with walking, and like to learn a lot about the science behind making beer, then this is the tour for you. We covered a good portion of the town (at least the main highlights), in just a few hours, tried 6 different beers, learned A LOT from our extremely knowledgeable tour guide (the dude knows so much about all types of beer, not just Belgian), and had a great time doing it. The value is also excellent at about 39 Euros per person (+ tip!). Brugge is a cool town, and if you are going to get some guided walking in, you might as well also enjoy some of the best beers in the country. Definitely recommended.
