It's a tiny beer shop with a large selection, that also sells beer accessories like proper glasses, brewery signs, etc. We didn't end up purchasing anything, because we had just begun our walk around town, but we did take note of some interesting brews. Why 5 stars? Because they had Westvleteren XII! --- --- --- My review here is quite brief, because my visit to this beer store consisted of one purpose and one purpose alone: purchase Westvleteren XII. I walked in and was overwhelmed with hundreds of beers that I'd never heard of. I walked up and down each aisle a couple of times, but eventually realized that it was going to be too difficult to find a beer with 12 letters in the name, when every other beer had anywhere from 10-23 letters in it - especially when most of it was in a different language. I walked up to a woman stocking shelves and just showed her the name of the beer on my phone - pronouncing it was not a great option. She walked me right over to a crate full of Westvleteren XII and a couple of other Westvleteren beers. I bought one bottle, walked back to my hotel, refrigerated it, and enjoyed it later that evening. It was delicious and I'm sad that I don't have access to De Bier Tempel to purchase this stuff on a regular basis! Even if you're not looking for Westvleteren, there's a great selection here - at least by my standard of an American who didn't recognize most of the labels throughout the shop! read more

De Bier Tempel is one of a few places that specifically sell Belgian beers. This is good for people who need their Belgian beer fix and said beer is not easily available wherever they live. For me I live in SD where there's a strong beer culture and a lot of the common Belgian beers are easily found in the specialty alcohol stores. However as I'm from the US, the euro to dollar conversion rate makes getting a beer here cheaper than getting a beer in the US. The store's layout makes it easy to shop as all the similar beer types are grouped together. Additionally you can find other beer paraphilia such as the glass the beer is served in as Belgium beers are ideally served in its glass. Some beers also come in larger containers meant to be given as gifts (think wine size glass). For Delirium and Cantillon Brewery in Brussels and De Halve Maan in Bruges (Brugse Zot), it's much better to pick up beers from the brewery directly to get better pricing by avoiding the middleman. Due to this and their location along a main street in Brussels their beers have a bit of a markup. When I visited the store a bottle of Rochefort 10 was €4.50. A nearby store further from the city center was selling the exact same bottle for €3. Served at a bar this bottle was €6. I can easily get this bottle back in SD for almost $10. So I guess it comes down to 1) can you find the bottle back home and 2) how much are you willing to pay for a bottle. Customer service was also okay. I explained my situation about flying back to the US. He wrapped the beers in a basic styrofoam wrapper but did not offer bubble wrap or wrapping paper of any sort. Conversely my family got better service in a beer store in Antwerp. The reason for the 4 stars is that they're one of the few stores that carry a rare Trappist beer, the "Westvleteren 12". By many counts it's considered one of the best beers in the world. The supply is artificially controlled by the monastery as they refuse to produce more beers than is necessary to run the monastery, hence why one cannot find this beer outside of Belgium. The store displayed this beer in a crate, hidden in plain sight next to the trappist beers for €14 (for comparison, a bar was serving it for €19). €14 is actually a reasonable price for this beer and I was lucky to be able to get this beer as my personal souvenir from Belgium. read more

If you're a beer enthusiast, i definitely recommend you stop by this gem. You'll feel like a kid in candy store, except its beer we're talking about here. The shop also has lots of beer glasses and souvenirs, though a bit more expensive than other shops, if its Belgian beer, they most likely got it. Also the only place near Brussels that has Westvleteren 12, which is reason I stopped by in the first place. read more

DE BIER TEMPEL! This is the place to be if you're looking for any kind of beer, trappist or otherwise, and any kind of beer accessories, beer mugs, beer glasses, beer signs and even beer furniture. This truly is a Beer Temple because the entire store is entirely devoted to the love of beer. The prices here are also fantastic. You would think, being in such a touristy area, with only about 50-60 tourists in there craming it up at once that it would be atrociously expensive. However, the tourist tax was nowhere to be found in this awesome place where the Best Beer In The World (yes... Westveleteren ...sp?) is only 11 euros a bottle! This beats nearby bars selling it for 12 euros. We ended up here, more than once, not embarrassingly, while being in awe by the selection of beers. They have every single trappist beer here. If you want to take some to-go they wrap it for you nicely and assure you it will make it through the rest of your European cities AND onto the plane AND alive at the end. The staff is superbly friend, extremely helpful and very laid back; something seldom seen in other places in the world where tourists are rampant. Highly recommended visit. There are many beer retail stores in Brussels but few get it the way the De Bier Tempel does. In terms of selection, De Bier Tempel has other places beat hands down. Then you marvel at their vast collection of beer glasses, even for obscure brews, and that's when you realize how seriously they take it. But then top it off with the amount of attention they pay to the wrapping of your purchases when they realize you are traveling via plane... they will bubble wrap your purchases tight! That's when De Bier Tempel truly is head over shoulders of other beers stores just trying to make a quick buck out of tourists. Quality selection, great store in the middle of the walking area near the Grand Place, a bit pricey perhaps, not as much Cantillon as I'd expect. I love good beer, so the chance to buy amazing bottles for 2.50 Euros that would cost $6-8 (or be unfindable) in the USA is just amazing. Lots and lots of 12-ounce bottles, starting with the Trappists all the way to Lambics. Even though many gift shops have a beer selection, they go so much deeper here. They have all the Trappists in many variants, including all 3 Westy / Westvleteren products - the 8, 10 and 12 for about that many Euros. Still super-rare, this is much easier than driving to the brewery itself. Deep selection of various Belgians, not just the ones you know. Wandering and grabbing is super easy driven by the relatively cheap prices. Strong reco for Troubadour Magma - love a Belgian IPA. Lambic-wise, they went deep - tons of Framboise, Kriek, and Peach, plus others. Only two Cantillon products though when we were there. Solid selection of larger bottles, including 1.5L offerings. Lots of glasses and other things at reasonable prices compared to the nearby stores. It's the definition of a quality 1-stop shop for amazing beer, glasses, and everything Belgian beer-wise you can want at solid pricing. Skip the "250 bottles available" and the convenience store places and go straight here. read more

I'll hand it to them, they do have quite an extensive selection of both beers and paraphernalia, but it's honestly not worth shopping here, especially when you can find most of the popular beers sold here for about 2-3x cheaper in either local supermarkets or in bottle shops that are outside of the 25km tourist-overcharging radius of the Greater Brussels area. This does make a solid last minute one-stop beer shopping location if you've exhausted all other options and don't care about a measly 1-2 EUR for something you can probably already get in the states, but be warned that some of the rarer bottles come with a hefty premium, somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.5x - 4x the original sticker price (e.g. 18 EUR bottle of De Struise Black Damnation going for ~60 EUR) That being said, they will sometimes carry beer that is available nowhere else due to the sheer fact that no one is willing to pay outlandish prices for said beers, so if you're looking for something that's not available anywhere, it's worth a shot taking a peep here; they have a semi-regularly updated list of bottles on their website if you're curious. For those of you looking for Cantillon: just go to the brewery. Seriously. read more

It is a large and tidy shop with indeed a large beer selection. However, if you are looking for pretty standard Belgian beers (Delirium, Lindemans, St Bernardus, Karmeliet, Carolus...), it is of course very expensive - you'll find the same beers at half the price at the closest supermarket (the big AD Delhaize, 5 mn away, is awesome for that). Definitely check a supermarket before you buy here! read more

Oh my. Some people have a religious experience when they walk into cathedrals and such, but I had mine in the Bier Tempel. Angels sang as I perused the multitudes of Belgian bottles, and a bright light shone down on my personal Holy Grail when I discovered that they had Westvleteren, a rare monk beer, hiding in plain sight. They were my favorite souvenirs of my visit to Brussels. The Bier Tempel is in a great location right off of the Grand Place, so you have no excuse not to visit. read more

I just came back from my own personal "beer tour" in Belgium and while in Brussels walking around came across this place. It is a small shop but has plenty on Belgium ONLY beers, which are NUMEROUS. Great selection of Belgium beers, glassware, books and anything related to beers. If you are ever in Brussels and are beer curious, do not miss the opportunity to visit this place, even if just for general knowledge. Stopped by on the way to the Delirium Cafe. Got help verifying directions, as well as stuffed my backpack to have some night caps. The selection is simply stunning and the main thing I remember is the that there was one separate section just for lambics/fruit infused stuff. i mean this is belgium, and many supermarkets/ corner stores will have a selection that some connoisseur stores in other parts of the globe will drool over, but this store still stood out. There was also a good selection of tin signs of all sizes, t-shirts, glass ware, and other stuff of that nature. Really no excuse to miss this place- it is near major tourist attractions/Delirium cafe, so you would not have to make a special trip. read more

I went on a one day self guided beer tour ;) of Brussels and happened upon De Bier Tempel. I knew of this store as years ago I visited their location in Bruges. My favorite brewery of all time is Cantillon which is also in Brussels so I had already purchased quite a few bottles from Cantillon before going here. They have a vast selection of beer and glassware which is cool. Their prices are not the best but the ability to buy all different kinds of beer in one place makes it worthwhile. I would not buy Cantillon here since bottle can be purchased at the brewery for 1/3 of the cost. I did pick up a couple of Japanese fruited Lambics which were again pricey but I had not seen them anywhere else. read more
