We just left Ypres and we were starving but wanted to get to Passendale too because it was getting late in the day. The only place to eat was De Herberg at the time so we went in and it turned out to be quite a surprise. It's a cafe but there is also good food to be had. First off I had a beer (Westmalle) and my lady had a cup of tea. The tea was served not with a chocolate or one of those speculoos coookies but a mini creme bruele! Nice touch.
The menu wasn't very big but we both decided on the Flemish stew which came with a salad and fries/frites. This stew was amazing. I have lived in Belgium for a long time and although I don't often order this, it was by far the best I have ever had.
Overall the meal was great. But wait, there's more...
The place is also a bed and breakfast. I'm guess the reason for this, and B&Bs all over the area is for the number of Brits and Canucks who come to visit the area for the WWI history. This one looked quite good although we didn't stay so I cannot comment on the rooms. The cook and waitress, who I am guessing run the place and probably own it, were very sweet.
JUST NOTICED THAT THIS THING GAVE ME AN ADDRESS IN ANOTHER TOWN. THE CAFE IS ACTUALLY IN PASSENDALE BUT YELP SEEMED TO THINK IT KNEW BETTER THAN I DID. read more
