The very next thing she told me was that it would be in my best interest to go with a flat fee over a billable hour payment scheme. The flat fee was quite large but I was not really in a state of mind to question it. Everything went through fine without any need to go to court after our six month separation. Many months later her office (quite accidentally) sent me an invoice for a little over $700. This covered a filing fee and 3.25 hours of work. When I sent her an angry email, she informed me that it was a mistake and to not worry about it. My biggest problem is that had I not agreed to the flat fee, which was supposedly in my best interest, the ~$700 was ALL that I would've had to pay. The flat fee was almost five times as much, or around $1,000 an hour. She may or may not be a fine lawyer, but keep your own counsel when it comes to your billing decisions.
